Lukquito
The lukquito are a symbiotic race consisting of a humanoid host, the Luqui and a tentacled symbiotic being, called the kito resembling a cephalopod that serves as the functioning brain of the host, with tentacles exiting the skull where eyes should be and also emerging from the back of the head before attaching to the brain stem and spinal cord.
In truth, Lukquito have a rather nightmarish appearance to them. Covered in thick golden brown hair on the torso and legs, they appear somewhat emaciated, an effect only enhanced by the fact that the pale blue flesh of the Luqui ends around the elbow, exposing bone and tendon underneath. The featureless face is typically hidden by an organic mask that is fused to the creature's flesh, giving the illusion from afar of a face. Up close, the effect is unsettling as the tentacles protruding from the eyes remain unhidden and the fixed features of the mask do nothing to convey emotion.
Every lukquito has a longstanding bond, symbiont to host. Their connection affects them in a variety of ways. The host experiences a sense of instinct and inspiration, drawing on the memories of their symbiont. This connection grants lukquito minor psionic abilities, as well as protection from psychic attacks. Some symbionts are warriors and others are more contemplative.
The bond to the symbiont can cause some lukquito to display unusual quirks.
Luqui without a kito symbiote are shy and reclusive creatures who live as far from other species as they can manage, usually in caverns where they tend the young symbiotes as they grow to maturity. These communities spread far and wide, as the sparsity of the luqui and kito populations mean that centralizing in one location would create the danger of the race being all but wiped out by a accident or attack. The locations of these growth centers are kept secret even from others of the lukquito. A host and symbiote combined is eager to explore the world and learn. Between hosts, a symbiote will convey its experiences to other kito , ensuring that the information it has learned will survive. Lukquito meeting in the outside world will, if at all possible, spend 24 hours locked in a telepathic bond to exchange experiences for the same reason. Unpaired luqui never leave their communities voluntarily. Unpaired kito cannot. Thus, only paired lukquito are known to the outside world, and to most of the world, they are only fairy tales. A visit to a civilized area, even a cosmopolitan city, by a lukquito can cause alarm or even panic, as it is akin to a mythical creature appearing in somebody's home. Without the calming telepathic field of the kito to buy enough time for explanations, lukquito visiting a settlement with their party could go very badly indeed. Those who travel with a lukquito learn quickly that quick introductions are preferable, for even in Valine, where out of the ordinary experiences are relatively common for even an average person, the appearance of a lukquito is noteworthy.
Additional Information
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
The Kito projects a continuous telepathic field to briefly calm the emotions of those around them, enough to avoid immediate conflict based on the shock and fear their appearance might cause. This will not stop an already hostile being from attacking, but will allow the lukquito or their companions just a moment to engage those around them and stop instinctive aggressive actions.
