Theodore Illyr

King Theodore Illyr

The only child of Queen Camilla Illyr, and the last of the Illyr dynasty, Theodore Illyr would rule The Kingdom of Vallanna for only two years, before, along with his wife, Daphne, he was murdered through the use of poison, on the orders of his closest friend, Edmund Tyrell, who had harboured a secret jealousy and ambition for the throne for many years.   Theodore and Daphne's murders would see Edmund claim the throne for himself, but after evidence of the plot was leaked to the Enarren family, of whom Daphne was a member, the southern regions of Vallanna would rise up in revolt against 'The Poisoner' King's rule, in what became known as The Panacea War.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

After suffering from a debilitating bout of illness as a child, Theodore's constitution would remain delicate throughout his life. Although not frail by any means, he remained susceptible to illnesses, and would abstain from boisterous and rigourous physical activities.

The state of the prince's constitution was an open secret throughout court, even prior to his ascension to the throne, as subsequent to his childhood illness, Queen Camilla had taken pains to ensure that he was safe and healthy at all times, giving much prominence to her court physician.

That Theodore was known to be susceptible to illnesses and maladies may have been a factor in Edmund Tyrell's choice of poisoning as his means of removing Theodore from the throne, knowing that the King's sudden death might be more easily explained.

Personal history

Born in 900AoU to the then Princess Camilla Illyr and her husband Christopher, after trying for several years for a child. The couple were overjoyed at the birth of their son, and loved him dearly.

Shortly after the death of his grandfather, King Ranneth Illyr, and the ascension of his mother to the throne in 902AoU, at the age of three Theodore would suffer a series of debilitating fevers and was sick for several months. He would recover, but would remain sickly throughout his childhood, and became known at court for having something of a weakened constitution. Following this sickness, Queen Camilla would become incredibly protective of her son, shielding him from exposure to anything which she believed might cause him sickness or hurt. Her court physician was never far from the young prince, as a result enjoying a greater prominence at court than many in his position had previously.

Theodore's education was seen to by the most distinguished of royal tutors, and at their urging, when Theodore was around seven years old, Queen Camilla began to allow certain younger members of other noble houses to socialise with him. Theodore would soon become fast friends with Edmund Tyrell, two years his senior and son of the Earl of Springport. The two would remain friends throughout Theodore's life, although Edmund's secret jealousy of Theodore's position would grow into murderous ambition following the young prince's ascension to the throne.

In late 927AoU, Theodore's father Christopher would lose his life in a tragic hunting accident. The Queen was consumed by grief upon losing her husband of over thirty years, and would herself pass away only a few months later at the age of fifty-three.

While still greatly affected by the sudden deaths of his parents, Theodore would be crowned King of Vallanna early in 928AoU.

His mostly sheltered upbringing had not well equiped Theodore to deal with the solitude in which he now found himself. While some would say her prescence bordered on being overbearing, Theodore's mother Camilla had been his closest confidant and constant companion, and he felt her abscence most keenly. Sensing their new king's struggle, the members of his new court would endeavour to support him as best they could throughout this turbulent time. It was during this period of both mourning and post-coronation celebration that Theodore would become better acquainted with Lady Daphne Enarren, eldest daughter of Lord Manfred Enarren of Laranna. It was not long before the two would fall in love, and would marry the following year.

Following Theodore's coronation, his closest friend Edmund Tyrell, now Earl of Springport himself, had cleverly managed to manoever himself into a position of great prominence within the young king's court, leading his privy council as High Chamberlain, assuming control of many of the affairs of the land. Blind to the true scale of his friend's ambition, Theodore would rely heavily on Edmund's political savvy for the running of the country, spending little time personally on the business of the land. In his position of High Chamberlain, Edmund would make many powerful alliances among the nobility, securing his place of power.

Just a year later, in 930AoU, the culmination of Edmund's ambition would come to pass, as under his orders, the King and now pregnant Queen would be poisoned by an assassin of The Velvet Court while on progress through the lands of the Queen's father.

Thus, with no living heirs, King Theodore Illyr would die; last of the centuries long Illyr dynasty of rulers. After much debate and political manoevering, and with the secret of his role in the deaths of Theodore and Daphne seemingly safe, Edmund would take the throne as King Edmund of Vallanna.
