Ghoulwood

Once known as the Kainga Forest, Ghoulwood earned its name following a heinous war crime committed by retreating Vescanian forces driven from the Rock Plains in the early days of their Astaguan invasion. Now, spirits haunt the forest in its entirety, and the only people who could placate them - the Cairn - mostly refuse to visit.   Despite having ample opportunity to grow in the almost 100 years since it burned down, Ghoulwood has remained barren and dead. The trees appear to grow branches and twisted roots, but no leaves grow. It is estimated at least 300 children were killed when Vescanian forces burned the forest.   Of course, Vescania denies any involvement in the destruction of the area's forests.   Most people believe the anguish of the souls left behind are the reason for the deathly appearance, though seldom does anyone but Tomokan shamans visit.

Hauntings

While no 'official' hauntings have been reported, the woods are full of whispers of despair. Travelers and passersby report seeing the shadows and faces of children, their innocence twisted by the fear and anger surrounding their deaths. These rumors alone are enough to stop the Cairn from returning, but they're not the worst part of going near Ghoulwood.   As of yet also unconfirmed by anyone in Karinga, or even Astagua for that matter, people who visit Ghoulwood have a chance being possessed or driven to madness. Though the evidence suggesting this happens is purely anecdotal, the stories are consistent and terrifying.
