Westwatch
A massive fortress with defensive capability dwarfed by few constructions, Westwatch was constructed after the Astagua-Vescania War. It watches over Armistice Isle, equipped with trebuchets and ballistas to strike down any Vescanian forces considering making a move on the Rock Plains. The people stationed there are constantly on edge, paranoid that the decades-old war could flare its ugly head again and that Westwatch, like the Rock Plains were before, would be but a speed bump on the way to Highburg.
Construction on Westwatch actually started just before the end of the war, though not much headway was made. The nomadic tribesmen of Karinga sought to build a garrison for the forces that protected them, but they were without the knowledge or equipment for building a useful fortress.
After the war, veterans no-longer fit for combat heard of the effort and made the journey to the infantile fortress to provide oversight. Since most of the Markan military was militia, their history of trade skills proved invaluable in creating the structure. After the Cairn learned how to carve the foundation in the bedrock, they made significant headway and completed the fortress in just a few years.
Completely self-sufficient, Westwatch seldom sees visitors. It is capable of housing a significant garrison of troops, and their families, that they may labor for the food, goods, and services needed to keep the fortress operational. Just outside of the walls are destitute farmlands, which would certainly perish were it not for the Cairn providing insight into the ecology of the plains. Even so, the farms are heavily supported by the Ilaen, against the wishes of Hastios Valfir, Duke of Nivasa.
The spirit of Westwatch is consumed by a willingness to war against Vescania. Garrison Commanders frequently struggle with tempering the energy and hatred and bending it towards a useful capacity, and as such turnover at Westwatch is higher than any other place in Astagua's military.
The importance of Westwatch's function is such that visitors are largely forbidden, and without a writ to make passage through, gaining access is all but impossible.
