Dwarf

Dwarves as a whole are slightly shorter than humans, and often stockier. All dwarves have significantly more body and facial hair than humans, and many take pride in growing long braided beards. The Mountain Dwarves that live under the earth have very pale, almost white skin, and slightly larger eyes to see better in the dark. Hill Dwarves have, over many generations in the sun, developed a much broader range of skin tones, often quite dark from living in a tropical region.
It is said that Dwarves descended from humans who descended into the vast network of caves beneath the Abraska Mountains. The Great Bastion of Bhaldoral is home to all Mountain Dwarves. This is because if a dwarf leaves the city and walks on the surface, they are considered to no longer be a Mountain Dwarf. As such, any dwarf that has walked on the surface is known as a Hill Dwarf. In the long past, there was a Dwarven civil war, and the losing faction was exiled from the city. These dwarves left and founded the city of Boulderrest in the hills of the Sprawling Bushveld.
The term 'Hill Dwarf' can be confusing, as it has two meanings. The Hill Dwarves of Boulderrest have diverged enough from their mountainous brethren to be considered a separate sub-race, therefore giving the name a technical meaning. However, as Mountain Dwarves and many others refer to any dwarf who has left the mountain a Hill Dwarf, it is possible to have a 'Hill Dwarf' that does not share much resemblance with the technical subrace of Hill Dwarves.
All kinds of dwarves are welcomed in Boulderrest, but if a Dwarf was exiled from Bhaldoral, their sentence must be considered before gaining access to the city. Many dwarves also have found refuge with the Tieflings in the city atop the mountains, Tel Quessith.
A third subrace of dwarves, the Gray Dwarves, or Duergar, live their lives in the Underdark, at a depth that even the Mountain Dwarves fear to tread. These Duregar have pale gray skin and have taken on an almost bestial aspect as they live solitary lives in the depths.
