House Blackblade

House Blackblade rule Rumblehood, the largest settlement in the Thundering Flats. The House was started by the Black Blade, a knight from the Burning War who is a direct descendant of House Glore, giving the House royal ties.   Their banner is of a bone-white background and a demonblade of obsidian black at its center.   Alternative motto: Blades of Black, Hearts of Iron

DRAMATIS PERSONAE

Dragen respected Hasting enough to let him wed his sister. Now, they are great allies, as are their Houses: Valtoria and Blackblade. Sir Dragen is a wise man that has seen much bloodshed in his life. He has been working on his lifelong goal of creating a road that connects all the towns in the Thundering Flats that is free of Lost for many decades. This has involved him killing many Lost and he is very experienced as a fighter.
  • Vansea Valtoria/Blackblade, his younger sister and wife to Sir Hasting of the Inferno.
  • Ydirina Tarbor/Blackblade, aunt of Sir Dragen Blackblade. Second wife of the Lord of Banes, Ri Drevyn Tarbor II.

He was so valiant in such battles as the Siege of the Silver City, and the Conquest of Dragonsbreath against the Emberlings during the Burning War that he was proclaimed a hero. After the Burning War concluded, the Black Blade started his own House and settled in the fringes of the Ember Dominance to watch over those they had conquered, but would migrate to the South to settle in the Thundering Flats after the Ashenblight plague. The Black Blade married Pantensus Glore, the daughter of King Theodosius Glore.
  • Bedirion Blackblade, the Black Blade's son. Bedirion would marry Rustica Drakis of Ashfield.
  • Kars Blackblade, Bedirion's son. Kars would lead the migration south, and marry Sevso Beautero of Blossom Reach. Kars is the father of Sir Dragen and Vansea Blackblade.

  • Algar and Atillus Paratus. Sons of Paratus and Jaze, would start the Paratus House of their mother's name.

Culture

Recently, there has been a change in the belief system of House Blackblade and their followers. They now believe that there are two Gods to worship. Veler, the Tempest, has risen alongside Ethos himself and is worthy of worship at the same degree. This is seen as heresy by the Iron Creed, who treat them as different people and hold to the belief that Veler remains as a soul amongst his loyal followers, waiting to be reborn to save Vaskeer.

History

House Blackblade begins with Priscilla Glore during the Era of the Iron Triumvirate. The Iron Kingdom was flourishing on Old Iron, and the First Soulsworn was creating works of art unparalleled in beauty. But, she did not feel fulfilled. Her life was coming to a natural end and yet there were so many more works she wanted to create. She attempted something dangerous and sacrilegious. She tried to infuse her own soul into an Ironweave, but this created something unholy. The Black Blade was forged, and it sucked the soul out of Priscilla, killing and damning her in one fell swoop. Her creation was not even meant to be a weapon, but when it absorbed her soul it morphed and changed into a great longsword, twisted and sinister with angles. The Black Blade was kept hidden and secret for many years, many believing it lost or doubting its existence at all. But all had heard the fairy tales of how it could absorb souls, feed off them, and that it would protect the wielder from The Soul Logic. But such a thing was seen as unholy, the Soul Logic was a natural law put in place by the holy God of Death, Ethos and to go against it was sacrilege. The blade reappeared centuries after its creation in the hands of a mysterious knight whose name is lost to history. Because of his blade, he became known simply as the Black Blade.
The Black Blade first appeared in the public eye in quite a dramatic manner, in which he slew the Failed King. Lucianus Glore, the Failed King, was old at the time, and had failed to conquer the Highlands and Ember Dominance and was content on letting them live side by side. But his son had other ideas. The Black Blade, his origin has been theorized to have been possibly a Glore, relative to Lucianus, or one of his sworn protectors so that he could get so close, slew the Failed King and proclaimed it to the Iron Kingdom. Before he could be executed for such treason, Lucianus' son, Theodosius Glore, stepped forward and dropped all charges against the Black Blade. Then, Theodosius declared war on the Highlands and Dominance for the first time in History. This would lead to the Burning War, and the creation of the Iron Empire. It is now common knowledge that Theodosius had his father killed so that he could start the Burning War, and that the Black Blade was his hired sword. After this, the Black Blade became known as a Kingslayer, but that did not stop Glore bannermen from following him into battle for their idealized Empire. The Black Blade lead such battles as the Siege of the Silver City, where the Emberlings launched a counter-attack and attached Silverledge in the Stone Labyrinth, and the Conquest of Dragonsbreath, capital city of the Ember Dominance which saw the subsequent surrender of said Dominance, against the Emberlings during the Burning War. The Black Blade became a figure of history instead of myth, and all knew the unholy magic of the sword and how it absorbed souls, going against Ethos and his Logic. But The Witnesses would not harm the knight, for he was a necessity employed by the Last King.
The Black Blade's son would continue the Blackblade House, settling in the Firelands as close allies to House Drakis. Then his son after him would lead the House far to the South to seek new lands amidst the Thundering Flats. The Black Blade's daughter would marry a lowborn man, and their children would start House Paratus as named after the Black Blade's daughter and their mother, Paratus Blackblade. Blessed by the emperor, House Paratus traveled with their close allies, House Blackblade, to travel south. The Blackblade's settled along the coast in Rumblehood, while the two brothers of Paratus (and their much smaller force of bannermen) found the remnants of Midcross.
The current leader of House Blackblade is Sir Dragen Blackblade, the Serpent. He is equal in skill with the sword only to Sir Hasting Valtoria of the Inferno. A famous duel between Dragen and Hasting erupted because in a tourney joust, Sir Hasting exlaimed his undying love for the Lady Vansea Blackblade. Dragen took offense to this, and said that any man who would love his sister should be able to wield a sword better than a child. The two aggravated each other even more, until they decided on a duel to the death. Vansea was horribly against this, but the pride of the two men were on the line. Both had made names for themselves as two of the best swordsmen in the Empire, and had something to prove. Eventually, they both ended up unconscious after two days of unending fighting, pushing each to exhaustion but neither able to land a killing blow. After that, Dragen respected Hasting enough to let him wed his sister and welcome him into his House as a brother. They are great allies, as are their Houses: Valtoria and Blackblade.
For all of the Dragen's adult life, he has been working on his lifelong goal of creating a road that connects all the towns in the Thundering Flats. This road would be protected and free of horrible Lost, but this has required him to spend many decades fighting and slaying Lost all throughout the Thundering Flats. Because of his sword, Sir Dragen can finish Lost off himself in melee combat, giving him an edge over other knights. He has grown experienced and skilled from fighting hundreds of these monsters, and his road, known as the Serpent's Tail, is one of the safest in the Empire, but is far from finished, only connecting the southernmost towns to one another. It is the Serpent's Tail road that gave Sir Dragen the nickname of the Serpent. Also backing this name is his ability to suddenly lurch into combat like a snake. Now Dragen declares himself both Duke of Rumblehood, Praesitor of the Thundering Flats, and possibly King of the South.
