Naming Traditions
Unisex names
Gendered names are uncommon. Human names tend to have three syllables or shorter. The stress is usually, but not always, on the second syllable if there are three and on the first if there are two. See Draconic for common phonemes. Some examples: Zotore, Tizene, Kileta, Iforit, Aza, Otembe, Agota.
Family names
If only one parent is a woman, it is customary for her partner and her children to take her surname. Otherwise, children take the name of the youngest parent, according to the reasoning that this parent will be alive and in the child's life for longer. Many modern families forgo this tradition and negotiate the naming of their children amongst themselves, as relationships with no women or composed only of women do for their own family name.
Other names
Names used by dragons form a separate class, derived from a much older version of the Draconic language, and may have more syllables (i.e., Tazatereq, Otanaba, Nehalgarost). It would be considered scandalous for a humanoid to take a draconic name.
Ideals
Gender Ideals
Although dragons have only one sex, some choose a human gender or two with which they feel an affinity. Anayans have followed suit, choosing their own genders according to their wishes and not limiting themselves to the binary options followed strictly in Atlantis and parts of Sarpor. The boundaries between genders are blurry; they are more like guidelines than rules. Anayan society is traditionally matriarchal, with family names and positions of authority passing along the female lineage. In general, women are stereotyped as wise in the ways of governance and leadership, while men are considered to be physically strong but rash and in need of guidance. Individuals who do not fit into one of those categories are regarded as spiritually potent and as natural teachers.
Major organizations
The Provinces of Anaya, ruled by the dragon-princes and their Dragon Cult. The Order of the Green Sun is the other major religious group to call Anayan soil home.
