Charles Wells
Charles, the second son of the Wells family hails from the southern city of Sab Narath . Not a wealthy family ranging more in the lower-middle class, though never so poor they cannot eat. As is the case with families like this, children begin their working life young to help ease the burden of poverty. Charles was no different, accompanying his father on expeditions to the ruins at the age of ten, the lowest job at the archaeological institute. His years excavating and collecting materials sparked an unexpected thirst for knowledge, an odd occurrence for the work of completely mundane tasks.
With each item collected, each site cleared, he dreamed of the splendour these civilisations once held. All they had accomplished wiped clean by the mystery of the cataclysm, told more like a fairytale. It left a sadness in him. That so much had been lost of that time, and no matter who he asked, he gleaned a different answers about what had truly happened.
He would often wonder what sorts of lives these mages had and pretend that he was there amongst them in the time of discovery and enlightenment. He kept a small broken piece of metal from his first excavation that was deemed of little significance by the Archeological Institute, but to him it awoke a desire to learn and an eagerness for more.
This sparked Charles’s initial desire to become a mage though his family had little means to facilitate this. He ended up befriending an Empire evaluators that he would submit his findings to. They would then sit together, and the mage would explain the significance of the pieces they collected that day. These sessions were eventually accompanied simple magic lesson where the mage would share his 'tricks' and understanding of magic, teaching Charles some basic spells including the secrets of finding a familiar.
After many years of excavating the local ruins, Charles’s mentor moved on to another area and Charles decided that it should be time for him as well to leave his home and search for the secrets of the old world that escaped him here. He decided to go on a journey and discover all he could about these ancient civilisations. To discover how to bring back what was lost and more.
“What might have been if they had the foresight of the coming storm? If they had avoided the cataclysm? How different the world would look now.”
As the final parting gift, his parents scrimped and saved, purchasing Charles a proper book for his spells and sent him on his way. Though he is not alone on his travels, having gained his familiar, a small barn owl named “Luna”.
Through official channels, Charles learnt of something unique. Only whispers at the moment, but whatever has been unearthed, the mages of Sab Narath and the Archeological Institute desperately want it. He has set out to find it first, for they are slow in their preparations and who better to unearth the secrets of the past than him?
