Sultan/Sultana

"My Sultana, the adventurers you sent for have arrived, and await your audience"

Since its conception, the primary leader of the Osmad Sultanate, is, as its name suggests, the Sultan themself.   The Sultan (or Sultana for a female ruler) has absolute power over the region's politics. It takes strong will and charisma to lead the second largest nation in Veridia, especially when its conservative and traditional people watch your every action and judge all your choices. The Sultan is a model citizen; a cultural icon. With such power, they can inspire change, or incite violence against their enemies.    Currently, the ruler is Sultana Nala Al-Sharaf, and has been ruling since 1418 CE.

Appointment

The title of Sultan is passed down to the eldest child (the prince or princess) of the current holder. The Sultan technically has the authority to declare anyone as their successor, but traditionally, the title has always been passed through family. In the event there is no declared heir... well, that has never happened in the history of the Sultanate, but the closest living relative would have the choice to take the throne or declare a new family to succeed.

Duties

The Sultan has all the responsibilities of a monarch. This includes making the laws, collecting taxes, maintaining the peace, and representing the Osmad Sultanate in diplomatic arrangements. In addition to these duties, the Sultan also presides over the Master Court in certain judicial trials, and can call for military action when necessary. The Sultan also has cultural obligations to follow the traditions of the Osmad people and is expecting to aid in the Sultanate's defense against its enemies.   While capable of directing military effort, the Sultan does not directly control the actions of the military or the guard. These instead answer to the Master General. In much the same way, the Sultan can distribute specialized tasks to specialized individuals, in an effort to minimize the management required by the Sultan.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

While there is no legal way to remove the Sultan, an unpopular one's career will end very quickly and violently. The title of Sultan is no stranger to assassins, angry mobs, and challengers, which is why the Sultan is typically highly skilled in combat. Still, sword skills can only work for so long, and so, perhaps due to the heavily conservative populous, or maybe even a terrible curse, most Sultans meet a violent end, either during of after their career. This ominously makes the Sultan one of the only careers with a 100% fatality rate. Regardless, a Sultan who was removed or otherwise is unable to sustain their duties is succeeded by the chosen heir.

History

In the initial founding of the Osmad Sultanate, two individuals were respected enough and had the support to lead the new nation. Unfortunately, due to wounds sustained in battling the red dragon that has previously laid claim to the area, one of these individuals perished, and so Saladin Al-Sharaf took the responsibility of leadership in memory of his fallen comrade.   Since then, the Al-Sharaf family has remained in power; the people seemingly content with their rule, despite some internal political enemies.
