Violet Kosaka (a.k.a. Sumire)
A talented singer and actress striving to escape poverty.
Physical Description
When on stage or performing, Violet tends to wear more revealing/accentuating outfits (ie a low-cut, form-fitting dress when singing, etc.) as part of her costumes. When off stage and socializing, she wears noticeably more conservative clothes (ie buttoned-up blouse with a knee-length skirt or a full dress).
Violet is shown to be practiced in literally digging in her heels when she needs to.
"The drunk froze on the spot, his face pale and eyes bulging as they swiveled down towards the heel pinning into his shoe. Morgan followed his gaze, glancing at the heel Violet still had firmly on the cobbles. Specifically, how said heel tapered towards the ground, ending in a polished steel cap. Morgan couldn't be sure how much pressure Violet was using, but he was suddenly reminded of a contraption his father once built for pinching metal caps over bottles."
Mental characteristics
Violet was born to a single mother who passed away when she was nine, leaving her to fend for herself on the streets of
Sonheim. At age 15, she was recruited into the Winrose Theatre Company and trained as a singer/performer.
As Violet began to establish herself on stage, she gained the attention of a number of admirers. To her bewilderment, said admirers included wealthy patrons who had completely ignored her when she was living on the street. Coming to the conclusion that such patrons only noticed her now was because of her looks and status, Violet became quite cynical towards the attention.
Most of her education came curtesy of her theatre company, teaching her history and literature (since both are commonly used in productions) in addition to literacy.
Works as a singer and actress with the Winrose Theatre Company.
Despite whatever advantages her singing voice or looks might have given her early on, Violet worked hard to become the noteworthy performer she is.
Her time on the streets left her with a bit of a chip on her shoulder towards the wealthier parts of society as well as a fear of ever ending up back in poverty should her performing career end.
Violet has shown an interest in history from time to time. Ironically, this means she'll happily point out how the "historical" plays her company puts on typically depict a romanticized version of events.
Violet's time on the streets left her with both a kind heart to those less fortunate as well as a notable cynicism towards most everything else. She admires people who work and earn their way through life and balks at those she sees as being handed their success.
Refuses to sleep with any of her suiters, understandably believing that most are at best interested in her just for her looks and at worst think she, as a singer, is an easy score.
Personality Characteristics
Violet seeks success in the theater as permanent escape from the poverty that plagued her childhood.
For as many headaches being in the theater causes her, Violet loves singing, dancing, and acting.
The tradeoff is that she's not all that crazy about herself since she only feels valued because of her looks.
- Often biased/prejudice against the upper class
- Self-esteem issues; often wondering if any of her potential suiters are interested in "Violet" over "Stella"
Violet is quite serious about keeping herself fit and healthy. Initially, this is portrayed as her simply being mindful of her appearance as a performer, but is eventually revealed that she hates getting dirty as it reminds her of when she lived on the streets.
Social
- Janise Thompkins: Janise was the one who scouted Violet and brought her into the Winrose Theatre Company. Janise served as a sort of mentor for the girl, helping hone her acting as well as navigate the performance social circles.
- Cassandra: Casey and Violet worked together while they were both living on the street. Though both were offered a chance to join Winrose, Cassandra went to perform at the Black Hare Tavern.
Violet is not a fan of the
Church of Lothny since the attitude of its followers towards Elves was the main reason she ended up on the streets instead of in an orphanage before becoming an actress.
While perhaps not a believer in it either, Violet is much more respectful towards
Daienism and even participates in festivals done by the local Elven community as a connection to her devout mother.
Violet is quite charismatic and charming on the surface, but struggles to connect with others given her self-esteem issues.
Friend
Towards Zachary Blackwater
Relationship Reasoning
Violet finds Zach's honest interest in her refreshing while her cynicism and own honesty help Zach come out of his shell more.
Commonalities & Shared Interests
Both lost their mother's at a young age.
Both also deal with how Church of Lothny followers look down on them (Zach for being a mage and Violet being a Half-Elf). This common ground is a major reason why Violet is able to help Zach come to terms with his magic.
Commonalities & Shared Interests
The two bond over their shared interest in history.
History
The two met when Janise Thompkins first brought Violet and Cassandra to the Burrow. While Violet wouldn't end up working at the Burrow like Cassandra, she and Himiko would often chat while watching the latter's performances.
Commonalities & Shared Interests
Violet is often eager to learn about her late mother's heritage and Himiko, having been brought up is said culture, is happy to share with someone so genuinely interested.
History
The two met while living on the streets in Sonheim. Recognizing Violet's talent as a singer and her disadvantage as a Half-Elf, Cassandra suggested they work together to earn more.
Nicknames & Petnames
Vi and Cassie.
Commonalities & Shared Interests
They both love performing and seeing the other grow in their profession so much so that when Cassandra left Winrose while Violet flourished, there were no hard feelings between the two with both attending the other's performances when they can.
Violet doesn't get paid much as a performer in actual money (somewhat justified since her company supplies her with room, board, and most meals and clothes).
However, she is able to build up a savings of sort by selling off some of the gifts potential suiters send her, once remarking that after a big show, she could have opened a second-hand flower shop and made a killing off the roses alone. This is also a means for her to make her stance clear with suiters, particularly ones that might think throwing gifts and money at her equates to some sort of privilege or ownership over her.

Featured Prose/Short Stories:
Solstice in Sonheim: Violet's Feast
You have a lot of good description, but a short story or 2 would go a long way towards fleshing out the character and article. Even a quote can go a long way towards "show dont tell" ie in the equipment section. "See the spikes on her shoes, I did the mental math, might as well stick your foot in a bottling machine" | Morgan We could also learn more about Zac in the article, as there must be a reason her assumptions of him caused embarrassment, but even in the plot article there is little enough about their relationship beyond mention of a single date.
The story Violet is part of is still one giant WIP that I'm very much figuring out as I go and I try to keep the Character articles focused on their respective character so that my notes stay organized. - I did give rehashing the blurb about her heels a go.
I wrote up a couple short stories for World Ember. You can find Violet's under Solstice in Sonheim: Violet's Feast
