Bishops of the Great Green
The Bishops of the Great Green are the council of high priests who run Palpariel and represent The Abundance. There is one representative for each of the active gods of the Abundance.
Structure
All bishops have equal status and voting rights, but everyone knows that the ones who represent more powerful gods hold more political sway.
Gods represented include (in rough order of power):
-Chauntea, goddess of agriculture
-Demeter, goddess of agriculture
-Freya, goddess of love, fertility, and childbirth
-Frey, god of fertility and the sun
-Isis, goddess of fertility and magic
-Sobek, god of water (and crocodiles)
-Waukeen, goddess of Trade
-Dionysus, god of wine
-Imhotep, god of crafts and medicine
-Tymora, goddess of luck
Culture
Most of the clerics in the council are old, and hold to the original founding principles of Palpariel with a stubbornness. They outnumber (and out-power) the younger, more politically active bishops. They accuse the younger ones of not being devoted enough, while the younger ones accuse them of being more too interested in spirituality to properly govern.
Public Agenda
There is currently a didsgreement in the council as to whether their primary purpose is to guide the hearts and minds of the nation toward spiritual rightness and cultivating More Life while leaving the politics to the ministers, or to wallow in politics themselves. They are currently sliding towards more and more direct political control.
History
The council was originally a cult of the Abundant who directed a peasant uprising against the feudal states exhausted by the Brothers' War. The majority of those clerics have either passed away or handed the position off to successors, but a few members were part of that original uprising.
Succession has, so far, not been an issue for the bishops; their deity indicates who their successor will be. They are usually a powerful cleric already, but sometimes they are craftspeople, and one was an illiterate peasant.
