Hydrogen

Overview

Hydrogen is the lightest and most abundant element in the universe. It exists on Vreathe in large quantities in the form of water. Hydrogen is easy to conjure by even inexperienced mages. It can also be conjured with other elements In the form of water, and as various hydrocarbons like Methane.

When charged with Mana, the only thing Hydrogen does is get hot and then cause an explosion. This is because Hydrogen converts all forms of mana into Thermal Energy. Because of this, conjuring Hydrogen at all is considered extremely dangerous and most young mages aren't even taught of its existence until late in their training.

When charged with Aether, the affected hydrogen will slowly and randomly turn into other elements. Lighter elements have a much higher chance than heavier elements. There is an even higher chance of hydrogen turning into an alternate form, that or Deuterium or Tritium. Hydrogen is the only element with this property, and it is the only way people of Vreathe are able to effectively gather large quantities of Deuterium or Tritium. This is also the only way humans can create Iron using magic as the conjuring costs of elemental Iron is far too high otherwise.

Element Chance of Conversion Element Chance of Conversion
Deuterium 60% Iron 1%
Tritium 10% Nitrogen 0.7%
Helium 8% Silicon 0.4%
Oxygen 5% Magnesium 0.25%
Carbon 3% Sulfur 0.12%
Neon 2% Argon 0.07%

Deuterium has a very important application in magic when it comes to the creation of potions. It is actually more important than the base form of Hydrogen is. It also has different effects when charged with mana and aether compared to Tritium or normal Hydrogen.

Tritium is able to glow without the use of mana or aether manipulation, though the method for this is not entirely understood. Silver Age texts call it Radiation. Tritium also has different effects with charged with mana and aether compared to Deuterium or normal Hydrogen.

Deuterium is a heavier form of the chemical element hydrogen. It is mostly used in the form of heavy water to make magic potions...

Tritium

Tritium is an even heavier form of Hydrogen. It has very little use in magical applications, but its radiation does make some objects glow...

Water

Large volumes of water can be created by conjuring Hydrogen and Oxygen at the same time. These two elements together form the basis for all Water Magic. Water conjured with magic is completely pure and cannot be charged with mana or aether, but can be manipulated. Naturally occuring water has many different forms and all of them react to mana and aether in different ways.

Fire

Flames can also be very easily created by conjuring Hydrogen by itself. It will mix with the surrounding oxygen. When a heat source is applied, either from a physical flame, or just by charging the conjured element with mana, the hydrogen will ignite and create a flame. Larger quantities of Hydrogen can create quite a large explosion, though the force of this explosion is somewhat less than the explosive reactions possible with other elements. Hydrogen can also be conjured with Carbon, either separately or into various Hydrocarbons, nearly all of which are extremely flammable. These two elements together form the basis for all Fire Magic.

Silver Age texts write of another use for Hydrogen, one that is outside the scientific or magical capability of the people of the Iron Age. When mana is applied in extremely large amounts, too much for many of the most experienced mages to accomplish, hydrogen will undergo Nuclear Fusion, releasing large amounts of energy and creating Helium. Iron Age scholars are baffled at why the Silver Age humans would even do such a thing, as a mage can conjure Helium almost as easily as they can Hydrogen, at several million times lower mana cost than trying Fusion.

Other things containing Hydrogen

Ammonia

((Stub))

Ammonia is a simple compound of Nitrogen and Hydrogen. It has a number of different uses across a variety of disciplines, but it is most commonly conjured by Farm Mages.
Peroxides
Material | Nov 12, 2023

((Stub Article))

Peroxides destroy Aether, converting it into different types of energy. The type of energy depends on the type of peroxide, of which Hydrogen is only one of many.
Luminol

((Stub Article))

Luminol is one of the more complex molecular compounts that can be conjured by the average human mage. Luminol glows under certain conditions.
