Magnesium

When conjuring Magnesium, its greatest use is in powering up the effects of Fire Magic. Fire powered up with this element will burn at very high temperatures and create a bright white flame. Conjuring Magnesium is rather expensive and drains mana very quickly, so only the most experienced mages will use it.

Burning magnesium is extremely difficult to put out, even with the assistance of magic. Water doesn't work because Magnesium will rip the Oxygen away from the Hydrogen, creating a sustained reaction in shallow water. conjuring Carbon Dioxide doesn't work either because Magnesium will rip the oxygen away from the Carbon. A common way mages put out many fires is by conjuring liquid Nitrogen. This is actually a terrible idea for many metal fires as Nitrogen can feed the fire just as well as Oxygen, sometimes explosively so.

The best way for a mage to put out a magnesium fire is to use Earth Magic, either by burying the metal deep in the ground where the lack of any oxidizing agent will put out the fire, or by conjuring large amounts of sand to douse the fire with. The most experienced Mages can also use a technique known as Reverse conjuring, where they use mana to destroy the Magnesium, removing it from existence and the fire with it.

A less dangerous form of fire magic using Magnesium is in the creation of a flash spell. By conjuring magnesium powder and potassium nitrate powder, a blinding flash can be created with minimal amounts of additional mana to create the thermal energy. These flash spells can also create a loud concussive bang if they are conjured a certain way, both blinding and disorienting those it affects. Alchemists are known to fill glass spheres with this substance, charging it with just enough mana that it explodes on contact with the ground. This creates a very effective stun grenade.

Explosive fire magic aside, Magnesium is also very commonly used in Potions in the form of various salts. Magnesium Chloride is the most common form used and can strengthen the effects of fire magic while blocking the effects of water and ice magic. All Magnesium salts can be easily charged with life magic and are often used to increase the amount of healing in any potion.

Another type of salt, Magnesium Sulfate, is added in larger amounts to water tanks and charged with varying levels of different magic types. Sometimes called Isolation tanks, a more popular name on Vreathe are Healing tanks. Individuals injured with magic are often placed in these for several hours.

While many minor injuries can heal very quickly this way, the main use of this is to encourage the formation of Magic Scars, which are normally quite slow to form on their own as the wound heals naturally. A Magic scar greatly increases mana storage and the ability to cast the type of magic that caused the injury. There are tales of people subjecting themselves to injury after injury followed by periods of rapid healing, covering their entire body in magic scars, but also powering up their spell casting to levels rarely seen in Iron Age individuals.
