Opal Arrows
Opals are a type of Aethercite mineraloid. It is a hydrated form of silica and has a rather high water content for a rock. Opal readily absorbs Aether, especially if the opal is placed in a liquid, or something that is liquid enough, such as a living thing. when this happens, the Aether is converted into more Opal, making it larger. It will keep growing until it reaches a critical point, usually twice the size of the original opal, where it will then expel all the water in itself in the form of steam, and then spontaneously turn into quartz.
Because of these properties, Opals are often sharpened into small arrowheads and are an anti-magic weapon. Once it punctures the skin, the ability to cast more powerful forms of magic are shut off. Opal arrows are not normally used when fighting people, as the armor they wear is often more than enough to prevent the arrowhead from breaking through.
They are instead a popular choice of arrow when hunting magical animals. Elven hunters in the Barony of Gelum use them when hunting the Orsho, a type of magic cattle. Because the arrows can absorb only so much before it collapses into quartz, it isn't enough to drain the animals hide of aethercite, but it does more than enough damage to incapacitate or kill the creature. Elves are also good at shooting the arrows deep enough to minimize damage to the hides.
