Castes and Clans of Thast Mondavrik
The society of Thast Mondavrik - City runs like a well oiled machine and is being driven by The Alloyed. The castes and clans of Thast Mondavrik make up the gears of this machine and if any gear does not work as intended in the machine than it will be removed, replaced, and likely run over by the machine. Whether or not someone is considered to be aiding or hindering the efforts of the city is determined by the Hierarchy of Priorities.
The castes and clans of Thast Mondavrik determine the entire identity of a citizen of the city. If one is without one or the other then they are immediately moved down the Hierarchy of Priorities and their lives get exponentially harder. The only way to join a caste or clan is by birth, invitation, or sometimes a legal union. This means someone would need to be a descendant of someone already in a caste or clan to be a part of it, be extremely skilled at a profession admired by a certain caste or clan and invited to join, or by forming a legal union / marriage with someone in a caste or clan. The legal union / marriage is not always a guarantee however, because if the caste / clan someone is trying to join considers the applicant as a bigger hindrance to them than the member they are forming a union with then they both might be expelled from the caste / clan if the union were to proceed.
Each caste has a specific type of metal associated with them to help identify members of that caste. In the same sense, each clan has their own clan symbol to help identify members of that clan. Once a citizen of Thast Mondavrik reaches adulthood and their caste and clan are solidified they receive a tattoo / body modification / body art in the shape of their clan's symbol and made out of their caste's metal. This serves to easily identify the role of the citizens of Thast Mondavrik in their society as a whole. If a member of a caste or clan ever does something to get themselves removed from their caste or clan then their symbol is removed by any means necessary and they are declared casteless / clanless with their scar of removal branding them as such.
Someone's clan represents their family, either by blood, adoption, friendship, or other strong familial relation. Every member of a clan always belongs to the same caste. Because of this, everyone in Thast Mondavrik is raised by their clan to be best at what their caste does. However, in certain occasions, someone might be exceptional at a different profession than their current caste / clan in which case they will likely be invited to join a different caste / clan and leave their old one behind. This is risky however, as an individuals rank in a clan is determined by age and experience so switching a clan likely would reduce one's social standing incredibly.
There are six castes of Thast Mondavrik at all times that run the city: the Antiquity Caste, the Prosperity Caste, the Civil Caste, the Innovation Caste, the Emissary Caste, and the Piety Caste. In times of war, a seventh caste is brought together to help lead Thast Mondavirk's military: the Military Caste.
Antiquity Caste
- Role in Society: The Antiquity Caste is responsible for the recording the history of all of Thast Mondavrik and Vylderaine. They maintain museums, fund the retrieval of historical artifacts, wright history books, undergo archeological digs, and anything else related to uncovering and preserving the past.
- Identifying Metal: Djezet
- Role in Society: The Prosperity Caste is responsible for maintaining Thast Mondavrik's financial superiority. They help conduct trade for the nation alongside the Emissary Caste, maintain the banks and vaults, run the mines, mint the currency, run most shops, and serve as tax collectors.
- Identifying Metal: Platinum
- Role in Society: The Civil Caste is the largest caste in Thast Mondavrik and is responsible for the day to day running of the city. Their duties include but are not limited to: farming, firefighting, street cleaning, construction, and postal work.
- Identifying Metal: Steel
- Role in Society: The Innovation Caste is responsible for maintaining Thast Mondavrik's techological superiority. They are tasked with seeking out and creating new technologies for the nation and their professions often include: scientists, inventors, artists, engineers, architects, and non-magical healers.
- Identifying Metal: Orichalcum
- Role in Society: The Emissary Caste is the smallest caste of Thast Mondavrik and is responsible for maintaining their political superiority. The caste contains the nation's ambassadors, judges, foreign traders, and spies. The caste also settles any disputes within Thast Mondavrik that cannot be settled between the parties involved. Most crime is settled by the parties involved however as the Emissary Caste usually rules in whatever way benefits their own caste most.
- Identifying Metal: Mythral
- Role in Society: The Piety Caste is responsible for maintaining and conducting all of the religious services necessary in Thast Mondavrik. They maintain and run the temples, collect tithes for the Prosperity Caste, act as clerics, champions, priests, and magical healers. They are also responsible for helping protect Thast Mondavrik from any extraplaner interference, especially celestial or infernal.
- Identifying Metal: Cold Iron
- Role in Society: The Military Caste is responsible for the gathering of the Thast Mondavrin army and conducting all of its military operations in times of conflict or war. The Military Caste is unlike other castes in the fact that since it does not always exist it does not have any permenant members. Instead, during times of conflict or war, volunteers from each of the castes are called for and whichever caste provides the most amount of soliders is also put in charge of the Military Caste. To be in control of two castes would be a great advantage for any one caste and greatly incentivizes people to join. What also makes the Military Caste unique is that it also accepts the casteless and clanless into their ranks. Should the casteless/clanless person prove themselves useful during the conflict then they are likely to be rewarded by being invited to a permenant caste or clan. Whenever someone joins the Military Caste, instead of being given the symbol of their clan in the caste's metal, they are instead given a tally mark for each military deployment they took part in.
- Identifying Metal: Adamantine
- Role in Society: The Casteless by definition do not officially serve any purpose or role in Thast Mondavrin society. Realistically however, they usually take jobs that those with castes and clans do not deign to do themselves. Due to the lack of work and respect, many casteless also turn to lives of crime. Sometimes these criminal casteless are even hired by members of castes to do their dirty work that they want to be able to deny should they get caught.
- Identifying Metal: Scars of clan symbol removal (or lack thereof)
