Sapient Extraplanar and Far-Umbral Species
Increasingly Alien and Uncanny Beings Residing Beyond the Near Umbra of the Duskscape
This section covers sentient species that are neither natives of the Near Umbra or Waking Materia. They may originate from other Mundane or Material planes in the Known Universe, traveling the Void between planes, or they may be extradimensional travelers able to move between Class IV planes via the deepest known, "Interesoteric" layer of reality. Since there is at least one Interesoteric "doorway" in the Duskscape (the spiraling abyss known as Quietus), Waking Materia is one such plane.
The total list of such beings is too large to ever be fully documented, though famous examples of extradimensional species include:
- True Dragons
- Sphinxes
- Dwarves
- Proteans
- Aeons
- Agathia
- Shoggoth
- Angels (not to be mistaken for the Valkyries of Overshepherd Rom, despite superficial similarities)
The Question of Life in the Wyld
The first and top-most layer of reality that can emerge above the Void, known as the Wyld, the Arcane Layer, the Aurora or the Arcane Paraecologies, is thought to be made up of pure energy, which wizards and sorcerers draw down and sculpt into magic. However some odd behaviours that can arise from the Wyld do not show typical signs of natural, unintelligent phenomena, and some have theorized that some form of "life" does exist in the luminescent Aurora. The famed First Age poet and oracle of Jabberwock, Zaffa the Idiot, commented on the existence of creatures he called "D'jinn" that ruled over the plane, and while he thought diplomacy of the beings was theoretically possible, they are too alien and eccentric by Material standards for this to be likely.
