Jabberwock

The Regent of Art and Insanity; The Manxome Muse; The Laughing Master

“I have lived on the lip
of insanity, wanting to know reasons,
knocking on a door. It opens.
I've been knocking from the inside.”
― Rumi

Jabberwock is the Duskscape Regent of art, fiction, mathematics, theoretical physics and insanity. They are also known as the Thousand-Starred Sky, the Laughing Master, and Baron Munchausen. Alongside Tallari-Anaviri-Irallat and Elir-Otrinax, they are one of three Draconic Gods on Materia.

The Laughing Master is an ancient and mysterious being even by Cenobite standards. They are both defined and obscured by the complexity of their myriad philosophies.

Jabberwock's alignments are True Neutral and Chaotic Neutral.

Appearance & Heraldry

Jabberwock is most often portrayed as a kaleidescopic, magnificently patterned void dragon. They don't seem to pay much attention to consistency when taking humanoid form: heights, shapes, fashions, etc. tend to vary widely. However most are tall, lithe, androgynous and wearing uncanny clothing.

Worship

“I maintain that truth is a pathless land, and you cannot approach it by any path whatsoever, by any religion, by any sect. Truth, being limitless, unconditioned, unapproachable by any path, cannot be organized; nor should any organization be formed to lead or coerce people along a particular path. The moment you follow someone you cease to follow Truth.”

— Jiddu Krishnamurti, Earth, 1929

Jabberwock is sometimes referred to as the Regent of Insanity; the term actually began as a dismissive epithet by Material scholars and clergymen, but has been happily adopted by adherents of the Laughing Master. If they can be said to believe one thing, it is that dogma, false confidence or “rigidity of truth” are to be ignored. What truths one does discover are merely stepping stones on an infinitely long, directionless path of discovery. If that sort of thinking is “insanity” as so many claim, they accept the label without offense.

Domains

Jabberwock's primary Domain is Delirium. Their secondary domains are Trickery, Change, Wyrmkin, Luck and Fae.

Favoured Weapon

Jabberwock's favoured weapon is the kukri. Their Relic kukri is The Vorpal Blade.

Realm

Jabberwock's Realm in the Duskscape is known as the Shimmering Jungles. Hidden within these endless, fae-populated wildlands is the magnificent Castle Caterhough, of a design unfamiliar to all but a small, near-extinct plane on the far outskirts of the Dohrian Eighth.

Apocrypha

It's said the god of delirium and unnreality gets his name from when he was a mortal wizard, untold millennia ago. He fell in love with a young reindeer herdsman and they traveled together for several years. But the wizard's wanderlust inevitably took hold, and it was time to bid his love adieu. As an apology for leaving, he promised her one thing within his power.

Her choice was that her imaginary friend and protector from her youth—a fearsome, dragonlike creature she named Jabberwock—become real, so that she may still have a compantion & protector in place of the wizard. With great reluctance, her love agreed, and with a flurry of arcane activity he sculpted the wondrous, alien thing from the demireality of her dreamstuff.

But it was a harsh plane the herdswoman was from, and she eventually succumbed to ill health. Without its master to protect, the creature grew unruly, then eventually dangerous. By the time the wizard returned to the plane to visit his old love, it had become a monster of great renown.

After putting his creation down, it is said the wizard took the name Jabberwock, to remind himself of his folly.
