Waltershofen is located 14 miles from Maselhof and18 miles from Wissenburg. The villagers make their living on the river and can assist in patching up a boat in a pinch. There is a village hall along the river.
Across the Upper Reik is the Averland village of Obernzenn. During the Mitterfrühl festivities, the two villages pit their two best swimmers against one another in a race to cross the Upper Reik. The tricky part is that the water is generally cold from the spring thaw and, at times, carries a strong current. There have been some contests where either one or both contestants did not make it across alive.
