Session 78: Making Frenemies

General Summary

The party has found and infiiltrated the Lost Level of Undermountain. After escaping an invisible attacker in the outside hallway, the party finds themselves in a chamber with a group of duergar who have barricaded themselves in. The leader introduces himself as Graham. He tells the party that the whole level is crawling with these invisible stalkers that hone in on a victim and stop at nothing until their target is dead. Many members of his party have been killed in horrifying ways over the three days he's been here. He also tells the party of several umberhulks that are making the level unstable with their constant tunneling.    Graham mentions that their leader Nimira Doomsorrow is leading this expedition to find weapons to take back to the Underdark to defend their clan. He says his small party here is looking for the tomb of Melair, the king of the long destroyed Clan Melairkyn. He mentions another party is searching a library to the north.   The party takes some enchanted wooden training donkeys out fo the chamber and noisily head to the north. The party begins to search the library but are surprised by some hidden cloakers which attack them. They kill the cloakers and are surveying the library as Graham and his party arrive, lamenting the deaths of their allies (the cloakers), not realizing it was the party that killed them. In the library the party finds a reference to the Temple of Dumathoin that says "only a king's hand may open the doors and air out the secrets withing". The party remembers they found maps to this level while they were exploring Brandath crypt which contained the 500,000 gold at the end of The Grand Game.   They lie to the Graham and his party, saying Thredd Dorselar has a keen sense of direction and is an expert on these ancient dwarves. They delve through pitch dark corridors. They find a room with two sets of dwarven statues and an inert arcane gate. They finally come upon a room filled with rusted weapons and armor. Through a secret door they find an alcover with a black marble sarcophogus. Engraved in the back wall of the alcove is a Dwarvish inscription that reads, “Our king is with the gods. Here lie his bones.”    As the duergar's pry the lid off the sarcophogus, animated battle axes once attached to the walls attack.
