Session XVII: Showdown at Silas's Trading House Report
General Summary
Grewarum sees a mass of guards head to the main hall. One remains in the hallway. Dalvanak sees six guards enter the room he just escaped. Garlith sees that the room he is next to is empty and three guards exit out the front door. Darius and Garrakas hear the room to the north--the barracks--has emptied out and hear a large bang coming from one of the windows. Thaddius comes down the street following a patrol of guard talking about an alarm ringing at a rich merchant's house but overhears that they are going to stop off at the pub first.
Dalvanak begins to head back over the house on the roof and finding the guards and Silas's thoughts. Darius, Garrakas, and Thaddius enter into the barracks side of the trading house. Restoring mental contact with his party members, Dalvanak relays that he tripped an alarm. Dropping to the ground, Dalvanak enters the trading house from the northwest wing and discovers a guard in the hallway and Grewarum in spider form. He distracts the guard, unlocks a door, and enters a weapons storage room. The guard returns to his post and begins talking through the door to his compatriot on the other side. Dalvanak leaves the arms room and just barely, with the help of his psychic abilities, enters an unlocked room which turns out to be the guard captain's quarters.
Meanwhile, Garlith uses his disguise kit to look like a courier and went to the guards at the front door. He convinced them that he had a message from Rhodion Windbreath. He is brought before Silas, who is being escorted to a safe room. Silas does not understand the fake message Garlith delivers but is disturbed by the description of blood and gore. Silas orders his guards to take Garlith to a holding area where he see three elves imprisoned. They explain that Silas attempted to charm them and then imprisoned them there. Garlith attempts to open the window and make an escape. Luckily, the guards were in such a hurry that they left the keys to the doors.
Dalvanak hears these surface thoughts while Garlith notices that Silas is fingering something in his pocket that seems spherical. Garlith relays that point to the group and Grewarum uses his spider form to wrap the object in Silas's pocket and jerk it free from the pocket without being noticed. Dalvanak quickly jerks the object from the other side of the door while Darius, Thaddius, and Garrakas begin to set fire to the barracks.
The guard in the hallway behind Dalvanak notices him and other party members in the hall. He begins to advance on the party and asking them questions. Garrakas attempts to grapple the guard but fails. Dalvanak uses his psionic abilities to barely stun him and Garrakas throws the guard into the burning room.
Garlith escapes out the window with the elves and runs into a patrol of city guards who ask him what is going on. The guards recognize the elves as missing persons and Garlith makes his exit. The party link up back at the Widdershins and examine the artifact they recovered. Thaddius casts a spell to identify it. The milky white crystal is perfectly spherical and has a small, round blotch of black within it when looking at it at the right angle. It can cast powerful charm spells, but carries some sort of curse relating to paranoia and greed. It required attunement.
Captain Bellweather barges out of his cabin, furious the party is fiddling with the artifact. He begins to threaten the party, but slowly regains control and explains that the curse is too dangerous. He has a special receptacle for the artifact so that no one will be cursed. Thaddius relents and hands over the artifact. Bellweather sniffs and calls for Grewarum to join him in the cabin.
Bellweather berates Grewarum for going to the Laughing Beholder. He tells him that beholders can't be trusted and asks him not to go back. Bellweather gets so angry that he transforms into a werebear. Bellweather is embarrassed and asks Grewarum to not tell anyone and appreciates how tolerate he is.
Upon exiting, Zaufanie tells the party that the captain doesn't like beholders but cheap perfume can mask the scent. He tells the party that they completed the tasks and just need to find some personal gear next. He tells the party that there is a goblin at the dock looking for them. He goes below deck because Crewman Crapo seems dried out.
Rudewort the goblin is there and tells the party he is grateful that they seem like good people to give his beloved ship to and seems tearful. He is sad that he won't go out into space again and the party offer to take him along to have another ally among the crew. Rudewort is ecstatic and joins up.
