The Inbetween
The Inbetween, also often mistakenly called 'Limbo', is a planar sphere that one day will be familliar to any living creature in the material plane. It is the last step of dying and the first step of afterlife, while also being none of either at the same time.
The Inbetween is technically an extraplanar plane outside of the other parallel planes, yet it serves an important function in the overall workings of the universe. It is from here that the 'gateways' are to all the afterlives of the 'Wardens of the Afterlife' and many other fae creatures, some benevolent, others malicious, some tricking poor souls in, or testing them to keep them out.
The Beacons
In the Inbetween, it is up to any soul now freed from it's dead body to search it's way to an afterlife. This is no point-and-click offcourse. Most of the times souls don't have much of a choice, as being way more powerfull then themselves try all sorts of ways to get them into their afterlife. Normally they don't do that in person, but use so called 'Beacons' for that. These beacons are most often just humble spirits that wander the Inbetween in search of those souls that would fit the requirements of the afterlife they serve, as if they are 'soul-shopping in the soul-mall' It does sometimes happen that a Beacon will be cut off from it's creator and it's afterlife. This can happen for example when the creature ruling that afterlifes has another 'buisiness strategy' for it's afterlife or simply because he does not have the power to spare to keep that particular beacon in operation. In some examples Beacons have gone rogue due to them beeing given too much personality and self-awareness in an effort to come over as trusting as kind, in other, more extreme cases the home afterlife has ceased to exist. When a Beacon for whatever reason is cut off from it's master, it will in most cases slowly die due to a condition known as Hypomanaxia (Old Eldari: hypo- (“under”) + mana + -ia), which is the condition in which the Spítexousías, a part of the soul, is deprived of too much energy to sustain itself, a condition harmless to mortals, but fatal to spirits and often even to fae.
