History
When Geoff was born in 585, Hector was demoted to "Prince" and their father, King Geruff II declared Geoffrey his heir. Since Hector was only three at the time, this didn't have much impact on him until later in their lives. During their teenaged years, Hector was resentful of Geoff's position and they frequently fought over unrelated things, often bitterly. As they matured, Hector observed how much stress being king put on their father and being Crown Prince put on his younger brother, then decided he was happy to have missed that particular source of agony. He didn't truly get over it until after their father's death, at which point Geoff and Hector became very close with Hector often giving Geoff emotional and political support.
Legal Status
If Geoff should die without an heir, Hector inherets the throne.
History
Katye and Hector became friends in childhood, remaining close until her father began pressuring her to choose a husband. Hector proposed a political marriage which would allow them both to continue to pursue their chosen relationships. Their resulting relationship has been content and joyful for all parties involved.
Commonalities & Shared Interests
Technically, Katye and Hector are cousins, as their grandparents were siblings (Queen Jennifer Varin married King Rosher Hadleigh, Hector's grandfather and Lord Salem Varin, brother to the queen, is Katye's grandfather). But Hector likes to make jokes about the family shrub regularly and everyone just shrugs it away. It's not even a technical genetic issue, given that the actual heir to the title isn't even related to his "father."
Shared Acquaintances
They are both married to Simon the horseman.
History
Hector met Simon during Katye's adventure to rescue Hector from himself while acting as royal ambassador to Pikae shortly after Geoff's coronation. Hector spotted Simon in a bar and said, "Good gods, I didn't know the giants had come this far south. Look at the size of him! He’s like a Glavnayan stallion. Put a saddle on him, I’ll ride him home." This was before he realized said Galavnayan stallion was also acting as Katye's bodyguard. Much to his scandal-loving delight, Hector also discovered that Katye and Simon had been sleeping together during their journey and were rapidly becoming more attached to each other than simply master and servant. When Katye's father discovered the situation, he dismissed Simon and demanded that Katye accept a suitor after years of fighting an arranged marriage. In the aftermath, Hector suggested to Katye that they marry as an escape for her from a marriage she may not wish. He encouraged her to marry him and continue to sleep with Simon. When the proposition was put to Simon, though, he was extremely jealous and accused Katye of being just another noble. It wasn't until he realized that Hector meant to marry them BOTH that he understood the depth of Hector's love for his dearest friend. While they began as rivals, Simon and Hector quickly became romantically attached and the trio's marriage has been successful, happy, and satisfying for all involved.
History
Hector is aware that Ginny is not his biological daughter, given her physical resemblance to her biological father, Simon. This has never been a secret and he loves her just as he would any offspring of his relationship with Katye and Simon. Ginny is also aware of her technical parentage verses her legal parentage and it has never bothered her. She loves Hector as her father.
History
When Hector was born, his wasted, twisted form caused the entire court to believe he would die early. As soon as Geoffrey was born, Geruff named his second son Crown Prince, relegating his first son to Duke of Grimm and earning Hector the nickname "the Sickly Duke." Hector resents his father and their relationship was always strained.
History
Hector took Aubry to be a page at Grimm Castle when she was twelve at Katye's insistence. He became uncommonly fond of his brother's youngest offspring and she quickly learned her way around most of the stranger aspects of the castle. Aubry knows things about Grimm Castle that the Hadleigh-Varin children never learned and she delights in using that knowledge.
Nicknames & Petnames
Hector sometimes calls Aubry "Bree" if she's presenting as female. Aubry formally uses "Uncle Hector," but also calls him "Heck" when no one is around.
Shared Secrets
Aubry was let into the family non-secret about Hector's dual marriage to Katye and Simon Garde.
History
Hector and Nolan have been at odds since Nolan was old enough to notice which of his actions irritated his father the most. They pick at each other constantly. Much of this from Hector is because he recognizes his own tendencies in his son--and he has no doubts that Nolan is his biological son. Nolan enjoys making Hector uncomfortable, just as he enjoys making everyone uncomfortable. Some of his recalcitrance is pay-back for Hector's vocal praise of Nolan's older brother, Rick, as the exemplary son and heir. Given that Hector over-praises Rick to annoy Nolan.... ....yeah, they're related alright.
