Structure

The Land Survey Guild is a paramilitary organization operating under the guidance of the Imperial College of Magic to survey with precision the geography of the Old World.
The leader of the Land Survey Guild is Chief Surveyor. The Land Survey Guild is broken into four geographical "Crews", each of which is led by a Crew Chief. The Mounatain Crew covers the Mamrok and Kronam Mountains, including the Virnistal Islands; the Steppe Crew covers the belt extending across the width of the continent between Ruriksted and the Hith Amon, including the entire Zuddak River drainage and the Gijazura Mountains; the River Crew deals with the dark jungles of the Celulinda Basin; the Southern Crew handles the lands about the Zavgeh Desert, including Zengin Island.
Because of its proximity to Ruriksted and huge area of responsibility, the Steppe Crew is considered the most prestigious of the four crews, and has produced 8 of the last 9 Chief Surveyors.
The River Crew has the highest attrition rate because of the ordeals associated with tromping through dense, mountainous jungles. Those surveyors that don't die of malaria or other jungle diseases, or who aren't eaten by the many beasts and carnivorous plants, usually quit after a single season.
The Southern Crew is the most remote, and has the most autonomy. Many people leave them out all but the most serious discussions about the Land Survey Guild.

Culture

Surveyor's are precise, and view their scientific work as an important compliment to the more artistic arcane projects of other members of the College of Magic. A mage may have a vague idea of where his teleportation spell will land him, but a surveyor wants to put him within 2 inches of that spot with room to spare.

Public Agenda

The Land Survey Guild was a major proponent of the The Glorious Expeditionary Factfinding Force, and Chief Surveyor Babenko made a generous contribution to the GEFF's supply fund. Lord Marshall Minikiene got her start on the River Crew before moving her way up the ladder to Crew Chief before the last war with the Dwarven Holdfasts broke out. The two are still close, and Babenko has entrusted to Minikiene the duties of Crew Chief for the infant Mididatoco Crew.
