Rurikid Empire
Structure
Long dominated by the Imperial Dynasty of House Ivanov, the Empire of Rurikid, has struck an unwieldly balance. On one side, the Imperial College of Magic, the organization of magicians, sorcerers, and artificers. On the other, the arms and armies of the Imperial Family and its earnest allies in the Star Chamber, the gathering and ever shifting alliance of the other noble families of the land. Rurikid society would be nowhere as advanced without the magic of the College and its artificers’ productions and wonders, but the aristocracy is constantly worried that their reliance on the college makes them weak, and so they prepare. This uneasy peace has held for centuries.
Culture
The Empire is, and always was, dominated by man. They represent the bulk of the Empire’s military class, and while on occasion produce magicians and sorcerers, they are typically wary of the Imperial College. From their boreal forests, the first kings of House Ivanov consolidated all the other human kingdoms around them, with sword and fire. Finally unified, they looked outward and began their conquest. Like a contagion, they swept the land until from Shining Sea to Sunset Sea did they conquer.
Other races prowl the world but never were able to create their own successful kingdoms. Halflings, Tieflings, tritons, all live freely in the land and have the same rights and privileges as the rest. Anyone with magical promise may be admitted to the Imperial College.
Public Agenda
The current Emperor is Dmitri VI IV, of House Ivanov. He ascended the throne at the age of 21 and in only 3 years, has pushed against the fragile balance that has held for a century. Opposing him is Archmage Ovak Longtusk, an aged Orc artificer who has led the Imperial College for nearly 50 years. He is the opposite of Dmitri, a deal maker and upholder of the status quo, he sees no need to disturb the foundations of the peace. But he is being pressured by some of his compatriots and legates to push for more freedom and even lands of the Colleges own.
History
Like all empires though, the Rurikid Empire is built on the back of another. Scattered throughout the lands are ruins and relics of the past. The Old Empire, as it is known, was the domain of the Dragonborn. Statues of their kings and heroes remain and are reminders that all things must perish. What led to their downfall is a hotly debated topic within the @College and especially among the remnants of those bygone days, the Dragonborn of our time. Few in number, they are not represented at the Star Chamberand have no political voice but have no desire to empire, only knowledge of their past.
