The Void

The void is an unspecified place, occupied by Ebony Marlowe and Jay Aster. The specifics of why it exists, where it comes from, and why they can access it is unknown. They appear there during lulls in the plot, and appear to have tea parties of sorts.

"'It's so cold here.' Ebony murmured, holding her cup as if, if she let go for even a second, it would shatter on the cement below."

The Void is reportedly very cold, including the food and teas that appear. Jay, however, points out that it is only cold when one of them feel cold, and this leads to the Void heating up to extreme temperatures as they point it out. In addition, the food's temperature also appears to be exactly the temperature that makes it completely unappealing. Ebony refers to this phenomenon as the "Anti-Goldilocks" phenomenon, in which everything is just wrong.
The Void appears to have many rooms, but the characters only ever entre two. Room one is referred to as "The Garden" by Ebony and "The Room" by Jay. It holds nothing but a foldable chair, a plastic table and china tea sets, that seems to reappear with no explanation. The walls appear to be made of rope, and Ebony and Jay sometimes talk about using the rope to escape.   The other room is referred to as "My Room". These hold the ghost of their respective past, in the form of featureless, humanoid creatures. They seem to have dissociated voices, and speak in a "hive-mind" of sorts.   It is unknown how Ebony and Jay can interact, when they are in different planes of existence. It is possible that Jay killed himself, or that Ebony isn't truly dead. Neither seem to know either, and passively accept that it is happening. This acceptance makes them closer, and they cooperate better as a result.   In some versions of the story, Jay, in a fit of madness, strangles and kills Ebony. This version is often ended with Jay also ending himself, resulting in the permanent end of the void. However, the story continues with them reappearing just as they ended. This is never mentioned and never explained, except in passing or as a joke between the two, signifying that it did happen, and was not accidental.   Ebony never acknowledges that she is dead, unless pressured. She will, however, mention the status of the other characters, except Guinevere "Vera" Arianwen Rhys. This may be because Vera's death can be attributed Ebony's own demise. This may mean that she is not aware of her own passing, or that it is a given.   The Void appears to have a ruler, as another room is named "The Ruler's Room." This door is locked, and none of the characters ever attempt to open it. This is one of the only rooms that is locked, and one of the only rooms that does not have rope. It is possible that it is the exit, as Ebony comments that it is, by far, the coldest room that they have ever encountered.

Purpose / Function

The Purpose of the Void is unknown. Why is it there? How is it possible? Who knows?

Design

The Void appears to be an endless mass of rooms. Some are joint. Some are not. Most rooms appear to be infinite, but still looping back to the very beginning, possibly indicating that it is a spherical space.
The Void Chapters are written as a Second person script. It follows a character named "You", that stares at Ebony and Jay from a doorway. During random intervals, your connection to "You" will get interupted, resulting in the next(?) day.   Each day also comes with a song.   Excerpt:
[Now playing: Comfort chain]   You are watching: Day one   Initiating transfer...   May the lady smile upon you

Ebony, looking at the door: ..They're staring again.   Jay: Ignore them.   Ebony: It's terrifying.   Jay: ...   Jay, sips tea.   Ebony: Why are you so calm?   Jay: Why are you so anxious?
