IC Title and Positions
Here are the official ranks, titles and positions open to player characters in the game.
The positions open to player characters are noted below. Filled positions have the name of the PC within that position. Open positions are marked as OPEN. This page lists focuses on PC related oaths, ranks and opportunities. Those positions which are filled by a Storyteller character only will be marked as ST-NPC. NPC Ranks and Titles are listed separately.
Oath to Freehold - the oath is taken binds the loyalty of the position and fae to the freehold. The freeholder in this case is like a boss or manager, directing the character to the goals of the freehold. This oath is weaker than an oath directly to another person, but will persist if the freeholder changes. If the fae betrays the good of the freehold the oath is broken.
Oath to Individual - this oath is to an individual, binding the two together. The character follows the direction of the individual directly and is bound to the individual. Betrayal of the individual breaks the oath.
Retainer
A retainer is a position that serves a specific purpose in a freehold or household. Retainers take an oath to the freehold honored by the freeholder. Retainers are recognized as full members of the freehold who run the household. They have mastery of their domains in the freehold. Retainers have authority in their domain and are considered above the non-oathed freehold members.
Vassal
A vassal is directly oathed to a titled individual. Vassals are considered trusted retainers who frequently hold leadership positions in the freehold. Vassals are loyal not only to the freehold, but to the individual freeholder. Forms of Address: Mister/Madam
Squire
Squire is a titled rank. Squire is sworn to an individual and is the first step towards higher rank for all PCs. A character will stay as a squire for a minimum of a year and a day before moving forward in rank. Forms of Address: none.
Knight
Knight is the highest noble rank a PC can achieve on the chat at present. Knight requires Squire as a per-requisite. Forms of Address:: Sir/Dame
Military Rank
Most Kingdoms have a military force that has a separate rank system based on mundane military ranks. A character may have military rank and a separate position if the two oaths do not conflict.

Tristan MacLaren requires a fae interested in taking title to perform 2 tasks to prove themselves. He requires the traditional year-and-a-day service before moving any fae to full Knight
This is on hold as Tristan accepted the blame for the violation of the Escheat at Riverwatch that prompted the deposition of Countess Odette Marceline. He will still work with fae interested in achieving title provided they are willing to help him bear this cross and rebuild Riverwatch.
Chancellor (also called Seneschal) - Corentine Thibaut - PC

Job Description: Their Lord or Lady's right hand, Chancellors govern the domain when the ruler is absent and protect the fiefdoms from attack. Their detailed knowledge of the workings of the freeholds and lands under their care usually earns them the trust and respect of the noble over them. Few abuse this confidence and most are given almost as much honor as their master or mistress

Job Description: Stewards are responsible for the Freehold's resources and organize and govern their ruler's assets. They control household finances. They also train and manage household servants.

Captain of the Guard - Kara Iceblade - PC

Job Description: Captains of the Guard maintain the freeholds guard force. They are responsible for the defense of the freehold and the fae within. They disburse chimerical and mundane weapons, and guard court treasures. They lead the guards of the freehold.

PCs may become guards by talking to the Captains. There is no limit to the number of guards a freehold may have.

Job Description: Commoner warriors who have sworn loyalty to a Lord or Lady, Thanes are charged with defending the freehold and performing military tasks that support the freehold. Loyal guards may become formalized as Thanes marking their advancement in the freehold.

Job Description: Reeves serve as official liaisons between a noble and the commoners who dwell in his or her domains. They fill the position of advocate for the commoners and will often appear in court to represent a commoner's claim or complaint. They also take care of a noble's freeholds and most courts have at least as many reeves as there are freeholds. Though they are only caretakers, some reeves may come to see their particular freehold as their own.

Job Description: Seers are skilled sorcerers who act as advisors to their lady or lord. They are charged with keeping watch against magical attacks against the ruler and his or her fiefdom, and gathering information through magical means. Their command of magic can make them distrusted but most are scrupulously honest in their ways.

Job Description: Librarians tend the library at the Heart of Fire as well as conducting rituals such as Sainings, and advising the ruler on lore and chimera. Serving as a court's storytellers and lore keepers, a librarian's person is considered sacred and bad luck follows anyone who knowingly strikes him or her or engages them in battle if they are unwilling.

This is done in traditional style: On vellum with quill and ink in chimerical tomes bound in griffin or boar hide. Many scribes illuminate their books with fanciful pictures to create works of beauty and repositories for Glamour.
