Downditch Bog
The westernmost portion of the Auchland River Basin is filled with nasty boglands, dead forests and ruined keeps of the old Rendlean Empire. Utterly devastated by the Dwarves that flooded out of their mountain halls to claim grudges declared. Downditch Bog is filled with wandering spirits of the past, and the most haunted place in all of Mistfen Mire. Thick mud and deep creeks of black filthy water cover the entire area, with ruined keeps dotting the landscape every few miles or so. Auchlanders don't go any closer to the Greyhammer Peaks and the bogs below them than the town of Downditch. The town of Downditch is always plagued by foul undead that slog through the bog to prey on the villagers, and are always in need of monster slayers. During the summer months, the attacks on the village are more frequent, and no respite is gained until the winter comes, which freeze the undead in the bogs.
In early 1633, a man came to Downditch on the back of a great black griffon. They call him John the Oathswearer, who has spent years protecting the village from the monsters deep in the bog. For years he has served as warden for the village, but now he has aged and isn't the warrior of legend he used to be. John serves as warden protector and village head for the people, and no one questions his opinions and actions, for he is always right in his reasoning. His expeditions into Downditch Bog are stuff of legend, especially his slaying of a lich that had preyed on the village for twenty years.
