Lake Mira

History

Lake Mira's precise etymology has been lost to time, however it is believed to have either been named for House Mira, or vice versa. It has been the site of much of Anhara's history, particularly its high politics, owing to its location at the very center of the capital region. Originally, the lake was entirely owned by House Mira, one of the most powerful noble houses of Anhara at the founding of the nation, however it has since been divvied up between four houses. When the government of Anhara was located at the Vestrial Tower, during the Age of Rule, the now-capital of Meridia was the seat of House Mira. However, as the government transitioned out of reliance upon the gods, Meridia became neutral territory and the new capital following The Crossing Over.   While the primary impetus for Meridia's newly neutral standing was the transfer of government, the Shattering of House Mira made the transition official. Following this, Lake Mira's shores became controlled by House Castel to the north, House Ilia to the northeast, the College of Vestrial Priestesses around the Vestrial Tower in the east, House Verdi to the northwest, and the capital on the eastern shore. This left the once-mighty House Mira with the small southern shore, and their seat in the center of the lake at Mira's Eye.   Lake Mira has only been breached by enemies of Anhara once, during The Waterspout War. Litoric Marines slipped past the defenses at Fingerwatch, up Meridia's Current, to Lake Mira, and destroyed a number of naval vessels at anchor in the capital's docks. From there, they retreated to Port Castellion, repeated the operation, and fled back to sea.

Geography

Lake Mira is fed by four major streams flowing down from the Coquet Heights, Elise Falls, Niven Falls, Sabis Falls, and Voire Falls, as well as many minor ones. The only outflow from the lake, however, is Meridia's Current, which flows to Honeyo Bay.    At its center is Mira's Eye, a small island settlement and the seat of House Mira, who also controls the southern shore of the lake. Along that southern shore are the mining towns of Delvton, Miramine, Argent, and Rockole. The eastern shore is under the control of the Vestrial Tower and Aradelle, seat of House Ilia. Also on the eastern shore is the town of Pilgrim's Perch, at the foot of the Vestrial Tower, as well as Glisade, a fortress at the base of the Elise Falls, controlled by House Ilia. The western shore features Meridia, controlled by no house, and Liraena, seat of House Verdi, as well as the Verdian city of Highgate.
