Duchy of Merryldin

While the High Elves mourn the fall of their Empire, some of them decided to find a new purpose and thus looked for guidance from the gods. Seraendia was at that point just a lesser godess, but her teachings offered a more emotional and exciting vision of life. The duchess of Merryldin took her house and other followers of the Sea and Moon godess and settled them in the Silverwhale Archipelago.

While at their core they are still a high elven culture the Duchy of Merryldin stopped worrying about the Elven Empire and its heritage. These elves no longer see themselves as caretakers of the world and accepted that other races are neither looking for guidance from the elves, nor do they believe in the recreation of a new Elven Empire.

The Duchy no longer follows the council of the Moon Isles and instead has the Merryldin dynasty as its head of state. Contrary to the Moon Isles they also don't expect mages to lead them back to glory instead the clerics of Sereandia are the main advisors to their duchess and other public affairs.

Demography and Population

75% elves, 10% half-elves, 5% dwarfs, 5% humans, rest mixed.

Territories

Silverwhale Archipelago.

Military

The fleet of the Duchy is the second largest fleet of the Blood Sea, but without a doub the most efficient. Well trained and experienced crews manage the highly developed, advanced ships, supported by clerics of Seraendia for smooth sailing and elven mages for battleprowess make an aweinspring combination. On top of that both merchant and military fleets are discpiplined and well coordinated.

Overall the army of the Duchy isn't large, but well equiped and trained. While lacking cavarly their are mostly operating on the sea and islands with troops that use mithral armors for mobility. Elven marines can always count on support of mages and clerics of Seraendia to join them in battle.

Religion

Religion plays a big part in the life of elves in the archipelago as it defines their difference to the other high elves. Seraendia showed them that the joy of being alive and a life of lust and hedonism is acceptable and even to be better than the sombre or even gloomy worldview other high elves have. While there is no pressure to join the worship of Seraendia for people living in the archipelago it is hard to not get involved in the frequent celebrations.

Foreign Relations

Realm of the Middle - Barely any contact or interest. Some minor trading happens through other nations.

Dwarfen City States - The dwarfs are seen as old allies and are respected for that and their skills, but the Duchy has little interest in other nations.

Kingdom of the Phoenix - For all intents and purposes they are seen as sad reminder of the Hegemony.

Alliance of the Fathomless - They are the main competition for the control of the Blood Sea, but as long as they are not united they are no real threat to the superior sailors and magic of the Duchy's navy.

Clans of the Griffon Mountains - As the clans keep some level of order against the pirates, they are seen as useful, but being humans and split up among so many clans there is too little trust to establish proper diplomatic relationships.

Cities of the Free Men's Coast - There is little interest into them beyond trading as they are far away.

Agriculture & Industry

Besides fruits and some smaller plantages most of the food comes from the ocean.

Elven craftsmen create everything from trinkets to magical items that are highly sought after in the human settlements.

Along the western coast of the continent only Veylindin has a school for mages. Sometimes elven mages might be requested by neighbours help with issues for hefty sums.

Trade & Transport

Pretty much all transport is handled by ships. There are some draft horses to help on the islands, but even then its just few since most islands aren't too big and have frequent small to large ports.

Education

High elven settlements have schools for younger elves' basic education. Afterwards they tend to learn crafts from masters in their fields. Nearly all spend at least some years on merchantile or military ships to learn sailing and serve the Duchy in the process.

Infrastructure

All minor settlements have at least basic sewers and proper water systems. Streets and roads between settlements are small but well maintained.

Frequent well made ports of all sizes are the lifeline of the Duchy.

Overall the cities are build in harmony with the nature surroundin them.
