Divinity
Everything began with the First Divinity. The First Divinity created the world, then splintered into multiple smaller divinities, which are the ever-present natural forces that we know today: Gravity, Magnetism, Growth, Decay, Magic, etc. These divinities spawned deities, semi-conscious divine beings that govern things like fire, wind, light, darkness, life, and death. these deities in turn spawned lesser deities with more specific domains, things like war, disease, healing, kindness, malice, weather, etc. These deities spawned lesser deities, and so on, and with each new generation they gained more consciousness and personality.
The more specific the domain of a deity, the less raw power they have, and the more they become closer to people. A deity can sometimes have multiple domains, which are typically all around the same rank. All gods have an awareness of things regarding their domain, even if they can't see them directly. The strongest deities will often be able to do things like travel instantaneously or take an incorporeal form and see everything in a large portion of the world at once. The weakest deities are essentially regular people, but immortal. The divine hierarchy places the more powerful, and thus more abstract deities at the top, and the weaker, and thus more concrete deities at the bottom. If a deity's domain is a sub-domain, that deity is typically subservient to the deity of the parent domain. For instance, a god of swords would probably be subservient to a god of blacksmiths, who might be subservient to a god of metals.
Any deity can create another deity. This is done by breaking off a piece of their own divinity, and bestowing it upon a being. This loss of power is why new deities are only rarely created. Theoretically, divinity could be applied to a concept, rather than a being, but the only divine beings who might be able to do this don't have enough consciousness to have any reason to.
There can be a deity for anything, even as specific as a certain variety of cheese, or a certain street. Because of this, there are countless deities. Generally, if someone wants to know if there is a deity associated with something, they pray to whatever it is. This can lead to a person feeling quite foolish immediately after trying to pray to something like a napkin. Incidentally, there is no napkin deity, but there is a deity whose domain is table manners, named Loris.
Despite their incredible power, gods are incapable of using Magic. This is because unlike mortal creatures, gods do not have Souls. However, as Xeies showed during the Year of Darkness, it is possible for a god to use a creature's Soul to use Magic, although it degrades the Soul very quickly.
There are many treaties and agreements preventing the gods from interfering too much in the mortal world. These were made over time after the destruction of Ainand, which the gods played a large part in. The most recent example of a god breaking these rules is Xeies during the Year of Darkness.
