Personal history
Leah Ranulk was born in a small town not far from the capital of the Mallowhurstian Empire. She lived her childhood as many (non-nobility) average Mallowhurstian citizens do, working for her parents most days and visiting the capital for festivals yearly. Her town was quiet, not many people came by -- and when they did come by, they were heading elsewhere. As a young girl Leah always rushed to hear the stories of these adventurers, much to her parents' disdain. Where she saw adventure and exotic lands, her parents saw thieves, poor workers exploited into false fantasies, and brewing political tensions. "Empire is safety, Leah, you don't want to learn that the hard way."
Perhaps of little surprise, her parents' words held little weight to her. Every day she would beg her parents to let her out of town, to let her stay out at night and watch for monsters or bandits. She and a group of a few other local children would attempt to sneak out, never successful except for one day; a day Leah considers to be the second most important day of her life.
After about a week of planning, the group of children with Leah at the lead put their plan to action. They snuck out one night after dark into the forest, lit only by the two full moons in the sky. The children walked for what felt to be hours, until they came across a small pond on top of a hill. From this hill they could just barely see the light from the capital in the distance, but more importantly they could just barely see beyond it; the blurry dark silhouettes of mountains.
Leah told the others to backtrack home and sat down by the pond, both moons and the stars reflecting in the water. It was then she swore to herself that one day she would find the largest mountain she could, and she (herself alone) would reach the top. She took a deep breath, successfully holding in tears, and made her way back home and back into bed.
The next 10 or so years of her life were spent waiting, waiting for the day she would leave. Planning how she'd break it to her parents, would she tell them? Would she simply just leave overnight? Would she leave a note? Whenever a group of travelers rode by she felt an urge to ask them if she could jump on, or to sneak into their carriage just long enough to get out of town. As she matured she learned that going off without a plan is not a good idea, so she set her mind to training. Getting older her parents allowed her with a bit more freedom, so during the day she'd go into the forest behind her village and practice swinging sticks like swords, climbing trees, tying ropes, climbing small cliff faces, swimming, and other skills she felt necessary for an adventurer. She came back home multiple times with broken limbs, cuts, and bruises, each time raising her parents suspicions and worries more and more.
At the age of 19, she finally decided it was time. While her parents were asleep she packed up her belongings, took some of their money from their coin purse hidden in the house, left a note detailing her departure and goals, and set off, the same two full moons in the sky as the day she snuck out as a child. Only this time she was alone, and not coming back. She walked on the path out of her village, the same path her and her parents would take to go to the New Years festivals in the capital. She turned around, took a deep breath, and set off. Before she knew it, the village was completely out of sight, and tears were rolling down her cheeks.
She traveled for a few days, keeping watch of her parents running after her and avoiding any strangers along the way. Soon enough, the path converged with other paths to form a more trafficked road reading directly into the capital. This was the first time she had ever been there alone, but her eyes were fixed past the capital, at the distant mountains. She stayed in the capital for a total of 3 days, making sure not to room at the same inn her family does and blending in with the crowd as best she could. While there she purchased adventuring gear, a decent sword, a bit of armor, and some food for the road.
The honeymoon period of adventuring fading away, she found herself feeling uncomfortable being out at night. It seemed to her that every night she was out more and more untrustworthy figures appeared, some hooded figures passing by her, others eyeing her, some even approaching her. By the final day in the capital, she went into the inn at exactly sundown, locked her door, and did not leave until the sun was fully up the next day.
After leaving the capital, Leah lead herself to the mountains in the distance, walking directly to them for weeks on end. Still feeling uncomfortable with the world around her, she tended to try to sleep in well hidden areas, away from anyone else. Still, as time passed she found herself calming down a bit. Her parents could not find her now, they wouldn't know where to begin to look. She was free, and she would never let anyone take that from her again.
Finally finding herself at the foot of what seemed to be a mountain (though, to Leah's disappointment, mountains were not the exaggerated spikes she once believed they were), she began to find a path up the mountain. Once she reached the top of a mound, she looked to see there was another mound a few miles away that was even bigger, and set on her path to that one. This lasted a few weeks, until she finally reached the base of something she was most definitely sure was a mountain. A classic, large mountain with a snowy top.
Leah readied her rope and began to climb her way up the mountain, much of which was far too steep to walk. On her third week of the climb, Leah noticed the weather begin to cool down. She planned for this, and put on a large fur jacket she bought at the capital. What she did not plan for, however, was traveling on ice. It only took a few days after the stone turned to ice for the most important day of Leah's life to occur. She slipped, falling into a deep crevice and knocking herself out cold.
An unknown amount of time later, Leah woke up. Sitting herself up, she felt an immense dull pain spread throughout her body. Her vision blurred for some time. Once it came back, she slowly took in her surroundings. She was in a cave, not just a normal cave but a cave of light blue ice. More shockingly, there seemed to be carvings in spikes of ice around her. Beautiful, detailed carvings. The more she looked she realized the cave was filled with beautiful carvings of a language unknown to her. Every inch of the wall had a carving, or drawing of some sort. She tried to get up to look at them, but she found her leg failing her and fell back down to the ground in pain.
To Leah's absolute horror, she heard a footstep. Then another, then another. Large footsteps, certainly not human. She tried to hide herself behind a spike of ice, but it was no use. The footsteps grew closer. Soon enough, she saw the figure of a giant man with light blue skin show up around the corner of the cave, looking directly at her. She was paralyzed in horror. The Giant squatted down and looked at her, then looked around the cave. "You do not destroy carvings. You are not enemy. I am Mazvok, son of Amvak, heir of Sismhor. Why you come here?"
Leah gulped and stood in shock for a few moments, Mazvok not seeming to mind. "I am Leah, I uh, fell down into this cave trying to climb to the top of this mountain". Mazvok looked up at the crevice where Leah fell, "A fall so high and you live! Impressive athleticism Lee-ah! Come, I will heal you." The Giant picked her up, not seeming to pay much mind to her pain, but still handling her as gently as he could, and brought her to his dwelling.
Leah spent the next few months with Mazvok, learning of his past and his family. She learned that he is the last of his people in these mountains, unable to find any other giants to join up with. He spends his days in this cave, carving away runes and pictures with immense detail. Originally wanting to leave as quickly as possible, Leah grew to like this giant. Mazvok taught her his craft, allowing her spaces of the wall that were not quite as nice as his own to practice her own carving. He said often "You are not Giant, you will never be Giant. But I don't know other Giants, so I will teach you." For a while, Mazvok scoffed at Leah's work, saying for such small hands she does not have good detail. However, after a month or two, Leah began to excel at this work. Mazvok was impressed, and even told her "I would think Giant did this!" with a large grin on his face.
However, all good things have to end. Mazvok told Leah that she must leave, that he must be alone now, that she is not a Giant and cannot continue to "use up the canvas of the Giant". Leah left that very day, heading down the mountain to the nearest town.
She got a room in the inn in town and cried herself to sleep. She was completely lost both physically and mentally. Not wanting to go home, and not knowing where to go next. The next morning, an idea came to her mind. She picked up her sword, and carved some of the runes she learned from Mazvok into it. Once the finished the last symbol, the runes began to glow and she felt a power drawing into her from the sword. She felt she could understand the world with a deeper lens. She went downstairs to the barkeep, and could tell almost instantly without asking that he needed extra help this morning, so she offered to help him. Leah did not know what to do with this newfound power, but she did know she needed to try out other runes.
About a week of testing out runes with varying degrees of success later, Leah felt that same antsiness she hadn't felt since back at her village. She had to go, she had to go somewhere, she didn't care where. She had to do something, something exciting. She packed up and left in the middle of the night, continuing on to wherever the road may take her.

Social
Contacts & Relations
Parents - Her parents are the owners and sole workers of the Ranulk Inn in Moshear, Mallowhurstian Empire.
Nautilus Maximus - Owner of the "Days Past Antiques & Exotics" in Kjarni. As a child Leah would drag her parents to this store whenever they visited the capital city. Little did she know the guy was a total sham, his exotics were hardly even foreign and mildly rare at best. Still, to the little Leah it meant a window into another world; a world she at 21 has still been unable to explore.
Alec Babb - Traveling musician who would often stop by Leah's inn for a few weeks at a time to play. Plans to study at a bard's college, but needs to build up a reputation first. Often sang songs of courageous knights fighting dragons at Leah's request.
