Personal history
Like many Tieflings, Petaios was born into a life of hardship and crime due to his race. When he was a small child, he was often pressured into petty crimes by his older brothers: stealing small objects, slight vandalism, petty harassment of guards. During that time, it was simply just fun for him, he didn't understand the true nature of crime in the world. It wasn't until his older brother, Aidos, was killed by guards while out in the city that he began to think of his actions. Upon learning that the guards were never tried or even investigated for this killing (in fact, unbeknownst in him, they were actually rewarded), Petaios developed a deep dislike for all the other peoples of the world. This isn't to say he hated all other races, there were humans and orcs living near him in his camp, he simply disliked people as a whole and wondered why Tieflings must be put down as a large majority.
As he grew older, he became more and more connected to his people, changing his anger to cultural appreciation. Indeed, he and his clan refused to speak common except when absolutely necessary which in turn gave them all a distinct and recognizable accent to the rest of the world. He did not want to hide this, he felt pride in his culture. This pride greatly affected his community in a positive way, he became a folk leader of sorts. He would sing songs to his people, write stories and poetry, document their values and culture for the next generation.
As he grew into his late teens, he developed a philosophy of his own, a "positive rebellion" mindset. He believed his people, and the Tiefling people as a whole, could succeed through cultural development. He believed they could start their own society, and pushed his people to resist cultural degradation and cultural appropriation. Indeed, in his documents he notes a "rather beautiful" human noble doing a dance of his culture to a crowd of hundreds. He notes, though, that while she did the dance remarkably (and he respected her for that), he knows where she is praised, he would be arrested for doing the same thing.
This isn't to say he completely disregarded more violent opposition, he just thought that to become respected in the world the Tiefling people need to bring themselves up, they need to document and practice their long held cultures, they need to stop committing crimes and pushing themselves to the ground.
As he grew into his 20s, Petaios became a leader for Tieflings or other pushed down races. The amount of Tieflings who spoke their native language as a primary language rose sharply; the amount of Tieflings integrating in society did not change, but they were much more aware of their culture.
One day, however, in an attempt to stifle the progress of the Tieflings, a group of mercenaries likely paid by the Church of Saint Cuthbert raided Petaios' encampment, killing only a few but destroying and burning all his papers, and cultural artifacts. A few days later, the Church announced that Abyssal and all variants of it as a language would be outlawed, and any people seen promoting Tiefling culture would be punished. Petaios was outraged, he called his people to stick more to their culture than ever before, saying that these are the times when change happens. Over the next few months he did some research about the church and about religion as a whole and came to the conclusion that the Gods aren't to be trusted.
He urged his people to ditch their religion, to promote their culture as a reflection of them as a people and not the Gods who refuse to help them. He was met with mixed responses, and the Tiefling community began to divide itself. Eventually, he and his half of the community were contacted by a group of Anti-Theists, none of whom were Tiefling but expressed "strong solidarity to the Tiefling people" and would consider them "the greatest ally, and even friend we could hope to have". Petaios accepted with enthusiasm, calling the Anti-Theists the "little good in a bad, bad world". Over time he and the Anti-Theists worked together, promoting each others cultures and working to dismantle social power hierarchies.
At the age of 23, Petaios out of a flash of anger went to the Cathedral of Saint Cuthbert one night and destroyed many artifacts, wrecked furniture, shattered windows, and painted "A-T was here, expect us. You will not hold power much longer". This threw the city into a panic the following day, the Chuch and Government were researching "A-T" and whether they were a threat or not. The city was placed a lockdown. About a week later, Petaios was found and sent to prison, set to get out "No less than five years, feel lucky we don't kill you, demon." It was then that he was given the nickname "The Hateful", a name known around Kjarni.
