Personal history
Martin was born in Drydock City on the planet Denisar, to Nelt and Callista Arkinyrn. He had no siblings, and to this day has few impactful memories of his parents; he thinks, perhaps, they were both unhappy, with each other and with their circumstances, and if they are alive now it barely matters. Nelt was a shipyard worker, like most impoverished men in the city, and because Martin was considered an ‘early bloomer’ growing up, becoming strong and tall at a young age, Nelt started his son in his line of work at the age of 10. Martin’s education was sparse and daily survival was a constant struggle, but from a young age he found comfort and understanding in the camaraderie of working men, and as time went on and political tension rose on the planet of Denisar, Martin soon gained a greater understanding of the sparking current that truly connected and ignited them all: revolution.
Martin’s young adulthood was one of hard labor, cruel living conditions, and the growing consciousness of exactly how much the RCS dug its heel into the necks of the civilians of Denisar, Tryntash, and Urghal, during the war and especially after it. So much of his life was spent scrapping and repurposing ships leftover from the war- a war that ended with the rest of the galaxy getting a pretty sweet deal at the expense of the freedom of the planets they saw as less civilized, less worthy of self-governance; planets full of orcs, lizardfolk, yian-ti. Denisar itself was nothing but a junkyard that produced ships for the Collective, with nothing being produced for its people, and those people were fed the fuck up.
Martin was a born leader. He had natural charisma, a concise way of speaking, and a fire in his heart. Spurred on by his fellow workers, he helped plan and execute an uprising in the shipyards led by the UTAI, where the men threw down their tools and protested against their oppressors. Things came to a head when the group at Martin’s dock started a tussle that ended in the bosses and guards being held as hostages so that negotiations could be bent towards the workers favor.
It was Martin who wanted to spill blood in that moment. He wanted to see those bootlickers flayed and begging for mercy, forced to see what they had driven the oppressed masses to come to. In that moment, the only thing holding back Martin’s savage nature was Hotzu, a pureblood yuan-ti that he had grown close with, and who knew how to quell the bloodlust in Martin’s core. The guards were unharmed, but negotiations never came: RCE ships arrived on the planet to arrest the workers and UTAI operatives for crimes against the collective, and Martin, along with Hotzu and other friends from the docks, were imprisoned on a barge, on course for the capital.
They would never reach the planet. The massive men’s prison barge was captained by an RCE officer who wanted nothing but slow death for the uprisers, and who began to space prisoners without trial, deciding for himself that each of them was on death row anyway. Once again, the fire of revolution burned in Martin’s brain, as well as a dark, eldritch calling that seemed to ache within the empty eye socket behind his eye patch. Nothing Hotzu said this time could keep the pure savagery at bay this time- Martin planned and led a prison riot that ended in the death of every single correctional officer on the prison barge. They were stabbed, shot, spaced- it didn’t matter. Martin showed mercy to those beasts back on Denisar, but not here. Never again.
And so he became Captain Martin, of the Righteous Sadist, a ship renamed and reconfigured to suit the purposes of its pirate crew. For the next several years Martin and his loyal crew of UTAI and dock workers became a menacing rebel force that the RCE tried its best to keep quiet and suppress, to no avail. Martin had high goals of taking out military ships, trade ships, and anything that would send a clear message to the RCE that Denisar was not a planet to be fucked with any longer.
Several things happened before shit went completely south. The RCE tried hunting down the Righteous Sadist several times, and in one particular encounter, Martin’s ship was nearly in dire straits against a powerful military ship, until a sudden, random little racing ship showed up and interrupted the stand-off, giving the Sadist enough time and distraction to gain the upper hand. The RCE ship shot the smaller one out of the sky, and Martin beamed up its pilot before warping out of the area. This pilot was a fallen aasimar named Enoch. He’d no political affiliation but would never want to see the RCE win in any fight, and foolishly risked his life for the Sadist and its crew; this aasimar would soon become quite close with Captain Martin, and get caught up in UTAI activity same as him.
The crew spent approximately three years ravaging the skies of the Collective, unable to be caught or stopped, and assisting the UTAI in broad revolutionary efforts around Tryntash and Urghal. The stealth equipment on the old barge made them nearly impossible to track, and Martin planned to enact drastic moves to really push the revolution along. Things changed rather suddenly; in a stop for supplies, the ship took on several new crew members, including a shifty earth genasi named Aspen Clearwater. It was discovered that Aspen had smuggled his twin sibling, Clay, onto the ship, seeking to hide Clay and an incredible power they’d acquired. It was all downhill from there- in Martin’s eyes, Clay was an unwelcome pest and a threat, and pretty soon, close encounters with RCE ships led Martin to believe that someone was leaking their positions and coming after both the ship and Clay.
Captain Martin wanted to make his final strike, as he was starting to worry that time was running out for the Righteous Sadist and its mighty crew. The RCE flagship, though not even a military vessel, was the biggest target he could pick, and he was determined to take it down, despite his crew voicing their worry that he was starting to lose his grip on his goal, and his concern for their safety. Something sinister was pushing Martin forward from behind his eyes, in that empty space left in his skull. The Righteous Sadist made its move on the flagship, and was met with multiple stealth vessels finally catching up to them.
The ship was going down, and its captain wanted to stay at its helm. Martin got as much of his crew onto escape pods as he could, though the attack on the ship was already killing dozens of men. He didn’t have time to regret or apologize- he knew this was the end of the line, and he wanted to go out knowing his friends were safe, and trying not to internalize that this was all his fault.
Before everything came down, Enoch appeared before him. He wanted Martin to escape with him, to not give up, to want to live, but Martin wouldn’t dare abandon his ship. He embraced Enoch, overwhelmed with the guilt that he had ever dragged him into this fate, this corruption. Then Enoch was picked up by an RCE beam- one, no doubt, meant for Martin, and the last thing he saw was Enoch disappearing into particles before everything around him went up in flames.
Then, Martin felt only the vastness of space, closing in around him, the debris of the Righteous Sadist fanning out away from his floating body.
Then, he heard a voice. Then, he was pulled into darkness like he’d never known before, and an ache pressed sharply into his empty eye socket. Someone saved him. Something wanted him to live, whether he tried to or not.

The crew of the Righteous Sadist, and Martin’s closest friends (and Clay)
Hotzu Ilshulla, Yuan-ti Pureblood from Denisar, Second-in-Command
Hotzu was a little older than Martin, and had been working at the docks for about the same time, coming from a poor family of many children. The two grew attached to each other through their complementary nature; Martin was often sharp and quick to act, often aggressive and opinionated. Hotzu was a much gentler soul, who believed despite all he’d seen, that there was still good in every person, no matter how hateful, or jaded- especially Martin. It was Hotzu who talked Martin down from a purely savage reaction to the hostage situation on the docks, saying that the guards deserved to live and had families and were still, at the end of the day, people. Martin listened this time, and the pair were imprisoned- though Martin loved Hotzu, he believed that Hotzu was much too soft and civilized for what they were dealing with. When the next uprising happened, Hotzu again tried to convince Martin not to resort to excessive violence. Martin bit back at Hotzu, stating that revolution required violence, and Hotzu was powerless to stop him. As the years went on, Hotzu and Martin grew somewhat apart, though Hotzu began to see the wisdom in violent revolutionary tactics, and doing whatever was needed to survive. By the time Enoch arrived, Hotzu’s kind disposition was mostly outward; inwardly he was struggling morally, while still valuing Martin dearly, and beginning to understand how difficult a life of piracy truly was.
Hotzu always loved Martin, even if they never really breached a relationship that went beyond friendship and physical encounters. Hotzu was always the angel on Martin’s shoulder and voice of reason. Martin wonders if he’s kept his moral purity even after they once again lost everything.
Tuyen Dorsh, Half-Orc from Denisar, Chief Medical Officer
Tuyen was born on Denisar, though never knew Martin very well before they met again on the prison barge. Tuyen was always a polite, formal man, who was often caught staring strangely at others while he was meant to be working or doing labor on the barge. He had a fascination with the anatomy and internal machinations of all different types of humanoids, and in other circumstances could’ve become an incredible surgeon, saving countless lives. In these circumstances, he became the chief medical officer of the Righteous Sadist, quickly adapting to the advanced medical technology on the ship and earning Martin’s trust as a capable doctor. He perhaps had a bit of a crush on Martin, but any flirtation was never reciprocated.
Mementos- Tiefling, born on Denisar, Weapons Expert
Mementos was the son of a friend of Martin’s father, and in their youth Martin tried his best to become friends, with mixed results. Mementos was.. an odd child, though perhaps he was always just shy. As they grew up Martin and Mementos found themselves similarly swept up in revolutionary tides, and found they shared the same passion for vengeance, and penchant for violence. Though Mementos was quiet, he was incredibly intelligent, and helped Martin with many tactics and strategy, from Denisar to the Righteous Sadist. He was loyal to Martin and always sided with him even when others wouldn’t, as he had no qualms with Martin’s growing savagery. He enjoyed finding the most creative way to build a bomb.
Brotluakusk “Lu” and Jojizosk “Jo”, Lizardfolk met on the Righteous Sadist, Head Engineering Officers
Martin met Lu and Jo on the prison barge, quickly learning that they were UTAI operatives who were considered extremely dangerous by the Collective. Though these two actually had no immediate blood relation- Lu resembling an impressively large alligator and Jo looking like a somewhat smaller water monitor- they were bound forever in a brotherhood and dedication to their homeworld of Tryntash. They had spent many of their years before the barge on UTAI ships as engineers and repairmen, while also being strong fighters. They were initially pretty skeptical of Martin’s leadership, but he successfully proved himself to them through his leadership, and they understood when Martin did what needed to be done.
Nameless, Warforged met on the Righteous Sadist, Pilot
Nameless is an android who was once built into the prison barge as its permanent pilot. He couldn’t speak nor truly make his own decisions until Martin and his crew took over; then, Lu and Jo were able to build him his own body and attempt to teach him to speak at least a few words. Martin worked closely with Nameless often as they charted flight paths at the helm, and though Nameless wasn’t always able to express emotion, Martin grew very fond of him. Nameless and Enoch seemed to have a particular bond when Enoch arrived that Martin often puzzled over.
Enoch, Fallen Aasimar, Martin’s best friend
Enoch showed up about a year into the voyage of the Righteous Sadist, and changed everything for its captain. Enoch was an antsy young man with a past he wasn’t eager to revisit, and had taken for a long time to cruising the stars in a very small, very small hot pink ship he called the Nemesis. The Nemesis had one shitty little railgun, and in a sudden burst of bravery, Enoch used it to assault and distract the RCE ship that was attacking the Sadist. Before then, Enoch had never been involved with political happenings and was truly conflict-avoidant, and his brief ‘fuck you’ to the Collective cost him his ship and almost his life. The Sadist beamed him aboard and took off, and from there his new life of involuntary piracy began.
He would’ve been terrified if not for the presence of Captain Martin. The formidable drow, with a sharp brow, imposing posture, and commanding presence- all of this overtook Enoch and kept him aboard the Righteous Sadist, despite his avoidant instincts. Enoch was soon taught the justification behind revolution by any means, while also bringing a peace to Martin’s mind that he had never known before. The two became immediately, quietly attached.
Martin never publicly claimed Enoch, same as he’d never publicly claimed Hotzu- but his love for the aasimar was overflowing within him every day. His own stubborn nature held him back, and before everything ended, he never got the chance to tell Enoch that he loved him. He hopes Enoch knows. He hopes Enoch is alive.
Clay Clearwater, earth genasi, stowaway on the Righteous Sadist
Clay was a bold personality and an overall enigma. They never seemed bothered by threats or confrontation, even when they were in extremely hot water for stowing away on the Sadist. It was Enoch that convinced Martin not to just space them with their brother immediately, to Martin’s irritation. Clay revealed nothing to Martin of their motivations or secrets, and in their short time on the ship made themself a nuisance by being so damn laid-back and agreeable to the entire crew. Martin still firmly believes that, one way or another, Clay is responsible for the destruction of his ship.
Aspen Clearwater, Clay’s twin brother
Aspen is a shifty as hell shithead who definitely hates his sibling. He never had any apparent intentions of actually keeping Clay safe and seemed to be mysteriously absent right before the ship went down.
