Personal history
Krothorn was first raised by her clan; a people with adventure and the draw to travel burned into their blood through generations. For the first 13 years of her life, she lived and travelled with her family; one of the herds of the Sunchaser Clan. Her clan has travelled the same migrational paths for generations; paths believed by them to have once been walked by the gods and one known to them as the pathmaker. Within the clan, tales and stories of these gods are passed down so as never to be forgotten as they follow the markers left behind by the generations before them. These stories are very rarely told to those outside of the clan, however, as they are not written down anywhere, and the clan's herds rarely stop near other creatures' dwellings long enough to pass them on.
By the time she was 3, Krothorn had seen more of the world than some people would see in a lifetime - travelling the open roads, passing through forests and valleys, climbing mountains - all while following the paths of their ancestors; spending her days travelling beneath the sun, and sleeping beneath the stars.
When she was 13, Krothorn fell mysteriously ill as her herd travelled through the site of an old battlefield; a location that many centaurs believe to be cursed or haunted. There are many stories among their kind which tell of Centaurs becoming ill, injured or even unhinged as they pass through these grounds. Krothorn was no exception. The illness came on slowly and seemingly without cause, as the herd's healers could find no adequate cure. They were able to slow its effects, but only for so long, enabling her to travel with them for six months longer before the illness took its hold. Krothorn began to slow, and soon after she was to be left behind, both herself and her herd believing that she may not be much longer for this world. Among the herds of her clan, it is often accepted and sometimes even expected that the old and ill who slow the herd be left behind, and so the act of doing so breeds no guilt or resentment among them, at least among the clans who still follow the old paths.
Krothorn happened to be rather lucky, as she had managed to travel with the herd far enough that come time she was left behind, the herd had been in a location relatively close to a dwarven city called (City name). With the strength she could muster, Krothorn was able to travel the remaining distance to reach the city, seeking out alternate aid in hopes that she may not meet her end so soon. With the aid of medications that the herd had not had access to as well as plenty of rest, food and water, Krothorn slowly began to recover, and over the span of the next few months found herself coming back to full health.
By this time, she knew that she would be unable to catch up to her herd, for travelling their migratory paths alone was as dangerous as it was lonely. During her time in the city, however, she had met and grown rather close to one of the local families - the Runeforger’s - who’d helped her and housed her over the months she had been recovering. They invited her to stay with them and she took them up on their offer and over the next few years her presence became commonplace in (City name).
During her years living in (city name) Krothorn grew very close to the Runeforgers, coming to view them as family, just as they did her. She learned of some of their traditions and of their family business, even helping them to run it for most of the time she spent living with them - mostly helping them with supply runs, heavy lifting, customers, and the like. The Runeforgers run a combination of a forge and a runesmith, Bhalnur(pa) forges the weapons, while Edrynn(ma) and Bronwynn(sis) engrave designs or carve magical runes into them. They are also known to make things such as tools, jewelry, and some pretty fine silverware.
Krothorn had a tattoo designed and started by her family in (city name) while she lived with them, similar to the tattoos they themselves have - this was the first mark of the sleeve tattoo that she now proudly wears - each band a little piece of her family that she carries with her wherever she goes, with her clans symbol resting neatly at the top on her shoulder.
The one thing she couldn’t quite do with her first found family was drink - though through her many attempts she came to believe that she might eventually build up a tolerance to it. Due to her nature, she has a natural intolerance to alcohol and any other ‘poisons’ - which affect her quickly, as her family found out the first few times she tried to drink with them - hitting the floor with barely a drink down. Despite this, she still tried to enjoy drinking with them, and at the very least developed a very slight bit of a tolerance to the hangovers she so often developed with them.
While she got along with everyone in (city name) well and came to love the Runeforgers as a second family, the years she spent with them in their town bred within her an immense wanderlust and urge to get back out into the world until it grew too strong for her to ignore.
With many heartfelt goodbyes, Krothorn went on to join a travelling caravan with whom she would go on to spend the next 4 years alongside. Rather than lend herself to the caravan as a beast of burden, she joined the guards and warriors who protected it, where she learned many of her earliest skills as a fighter. While many of the men and women she travelled alongside came and went over the years - a few remained for the entirety of the caravan's travels with her. One of her fellow guards in particular - a Half-Orc named Darimm, really made the caravan feel like home, becoming like a brother to her. They spent a great deal of time sparring and getting into mischief together while they weren’t on shift (including the drinking incident).
When the caravans contract with its supplier came to an end, it and its inhabitants parted ways to pursue different paths, Darimm decided to pursue a career as a guard in (City name) and Krothorn decided that she would seek out further adventure and journeys. Before heading out on her journey, she did spend some time in (city name) with Darimm while she sought out another group to join.
While in (city name), Krothorn had Darimm add his own band to her tattoo, and was there to see him become a member of the local guard. She also witnessed the blossoming of romance between him and a lovely woman he’d met and fallen head over heels for named Eshka. And though Krothorn was only in (city name) for a few years, she considers herself lucky enough to have seen their love bloom and grow - to celebrate their marriage alongside them, and even luckier still to have met their first child and her godson; Romi, before finally moving on from the city to join another caravan as it came through in need of additional protection. Following more heartfelt goodbyes, Krothorn finds herself travelling the vast and wonderful open roads, chasing adventure as she so loves once again.
