Personal history
Shauntha was born in Felles; a small human town known for its harsh and unyielding people with biased views and an unwelcoming nature towards anyone unlike themselves.
She grew up with her mother in a small cozy house on the outskirts of the town. She’d never met her father and her mother rarely spoke of him. What she did know was that he was a kind, strong man who her mother had loved very much. Shauntha didn’t know why he’d had to leave, but she knew that her mother spent many nights sitting by the window wishing that he would come home.
When she was young, Shauntha was a happy, energetic child who loved to run around and play. She would often try to play with the other children in the town until their parents would sneer and pull them away. She was still very young when she began to realize and ask why she was so different, but at the time she was still too young to truly understand the answers that her mother gave and so nothing seemed to bother her.
As she grew older, however, things did slowly begin to bother her. At first, it was just the little things; the other children running away from her, pointing out her differences and the name calling that came with it. As they aged, the behaviours grew more harmful over time, leading to pushing, shoving, rocks being thrown, harsher names and the like.
There was one child in the town that did not join in; a young girl named Nia, who had moved into the town just shortly before Shauntha’s ninth birthday. Nia stood up for her and told her stories about all her different friends from the other places she’d lived. They ended up becoming close friends and for Shauntha, it was a very important time in her life; realizing that not all people were innately awful. They remained close friends for a few years, until Nia’s family moved away from Felles and they lost contact with one another.
After Nia left, things returned to the way they’d been before and at the age of twelve, Shauntha reached a breaking point; her emotions boiling over and getting the best of her, clouding her judgement. She thought that if she could just make herself look more ‘normal’.. more like the other kids, it might make things easier. She decided to start with her fangs; one of the things the other children pointed out and made fun of the most. She waited until her mother was asleep to sneak out to the tool cart for a pair of pliers, but her mother heard the rummaging and woke. Her mother found her as she was struggling to get a good grip on her left fang and panicked, grabbing the pliers which caused them to slip; chipping the side of her fang and cutting her chin as they fell.
Shauntha had seen the way her actions had hurt her mother, who had spent much of the night afterward crying and questioning how she could have prevented what had happened. She realized that her actions had hurt her mother more than they had hurt herself and it was shortly afterwards that she decided it was best to keep her emotions hidden, tucked away and under control. She figured that if she didn’t think about them anymore, then they wouldn’t be able to cloud her thoughts again and she wouldn’t have to worry or hurt the people she cared about again. As she grew, it became something like second nature for her; to the point that it eventually became hard for her to let her emotions show at all.
All throughout her childhood, Shauntha’s mother would take her on trips into the nearby forests and wilds. Her mother used these trips to teach her many useful skills as they camped out, hunted, foraged and ‘survived’. Shauntha adored these trips. She loved learning the skills her mother taught her and perhaps moreso, she just loved getting away from Felles, enjoying the peace and quiet of nature away from the small town and it’s bitter people.
As she grew older, her resentment towards the town grew with her. She found herself more often than not just wanting to be away from it. The people in the town had not become any more welcoming over the years and it wore down on her, dragging down her sense of self worth and pride. Shortly after her fifteenth birthday, she decided to leave the town behind and venture out into the world to find a place she could call her own. She tried to convince her mother to go with her, but something seemed to keep her mother from wanting to leave, despite also having a clear dislike of the town and it’s people. In the back of her mind, Shauntha knew that her mother still hoped that her father would return home one day.
Her mother was sad to see her go but did not want her lingering attachments to hold her back or keep her tied to the town. She understood why she wanted to leave and encouraged her to go out into the world and find her place in it. As a parting gift, she gave Shauntha the amulet she had always worn around her neck. It was a beautiful green gem that she had never seen her mother without. Her mother told her that it had been gifted to her long ago by one she had loved very much and that she was now giving it to her, promising her that it would bring her luck and keep her safe through her travels.
After she’d left Felles, Shauntha spent a good deal of time travelling and wandering, passing through a few towns and cities; though she never stayed long. Eventually she ended up in the forest South of Virmir. She took quite a liking to it, as the forest reminded her of her trips with her mother. It didn’t take long for her to decide to settle down and place some roots there. She built herself a hut on the edge of the forest and the shoreline, where she spent the next few years living in near complete solitude. She spent a great deal of time honing her skills, hunting and living off the land. On occasion, she would travel into a nearby town or city to trade pelts, meats and other resources she gathered for things that she couldn’t find in the forest. She did not spend much time socializing, always very to the point with her trades before leaving and heading back home to her hut in the forest.
During her third year living in the forest, she found a small child wandering, lost and near freezing within the forest during a particularly harsh winter storm. The child had initially been afraid of Shauntha, but with some patience, she had been able to help the girl, getting her back to her hut, warmed up and fed before learning that she had been travelling with her family's caravan and had become lost in the woods when the snowstorm hit. For two days, she took care of the girl, who she learned was named Keely, while they waited for the storm to calm. Once it had, she walked with her through the forest until they managed to track down the caravan, which had stopped a ways up the road once they’d realized that Keely had become lost. Keely’s family was overjoyed to see her return safely and insisted that Shauntha spend the night with them before heading back, and so they shared a meal, spent much of the night telling her stories of their travels and even traded a few things for some of the furs she’d had with her. As they parted ways the next morning they told her that if they ever crossed paths again, she would have a friend in them.
It was not long after that Shauntha met the group of people she would go on to spend the next years travelling, fighting and adventuring with, leaving her life of solitude in the forest behind her for the foreseeable future.
