Braylintarus, the 2nd of three children born to Ilorriann and Territhian Idlebrook grew up in the declining ancient city of Elgrin-Fa (now mostly in ruin). This small Silver Elf community still dwelling in what is now known as the Goblinekin Wood make their homes in what is left of the once thriving and wonderous city.
Braylintarus being the middle child and only son had not quite lived up to what his parents were expectations, especially his father. Unlike his sisters Braylin showed a great aptitude for solving riddles both mental and physical which lead his parents to think that he too would follow the familial path of studying mage craft in particularly war-wizardry. But Braylin had other ideas and distractions, such as spying on one of the local and relatively harmless goblin tribes or openly wandering the less patrolled ruined sections of the city. Recognizing that a rift was forming between Braylin and his father, Ilorriann suggested a compromise that might settle Territhian’s sense to duty to the clan and her son’s insatiable curiosity and wander lust. Ilorriann suggested that Braylin see Captain Aegiess of the Cor'Etriel’s (Queen’s) Guard. His curiosity piqued Braylin decided to do just that. Listening in on his parent’s discussion and those elders amongst his people Braylintarus knew that after the death of Cor'Quessir Enduranthiir the late King of Elgrin-Fa that much change was to come. Sephori’a now Cor’Etriel, for much of her 400 years had counselled to the late Coronal (her father) that it was time for their people to open their city to the goodly folk of the region. This would help to retake the ruins lost during the time of the Shattering and forge strong relationships with the shorter-lived races. It might even provide a new foundation for the once proud city and protect all those seeking peace and inspiration in the region from the marauding orcs, goblinoids and giants neighboring their boarders.
It has been a nearly four decades since his designation to the Cor’Etriel’s Envoy. It was during the first decade of his training that Braylin learned seldom taught skills of the art and for going the traditional quess / esti Faer (Elven Magic). As his mother expected Braylin was one of the most successful in his training except for what his Aeristers (instructors) called his constant many distractions / experiments with the various regents and other spell components. These were a cause for more than one set back in his training.
‘It all came so clear if I just switched out the soot and salt with sulfur and quartz then I would be able to not only comprehend the Terran language but I would be able to convers in that tongue for a much reduced period of time. Just a pinch of the new mixture and the final incantation and then a bright flash and the sickening smell of charred flesh and there was screaming, my screaming.’
‘Braylintarus you blew a hole right through the wall of my workshop, not to mention you took off the tip of your right ear in the process. What can you say for yourself? You are to careless and have not had the proper instruction in the Art yet you feel it necessary to fiddle and manipulate things and sometime persons around you, all because you think there is always a better way’ Aurister Kirvenor admonished.
‘Since you know better than we, your Aurister, it is our recommendation to the Cor’Etriel’s that your training here is complete and that you be sent out to one of the outlying settlements. ‘Lumberfell to be exact. It is a relatively small human settlement on the outskirts of Meldamiriel to the South West. You are to meet up with Linten Half-elven; your cousin I believe. Is that not correct? (All said with distain) Ah never mind. So you are to meet with Linten, she will bring you to this Lumberfell. Linten and her human husband will provide lodging during your time with them. You are to live amongst them and gauge their worth and report back to myself and the Cor’Etriel your assessment. May your finally find your path and the blessing of the Shee Ebrath be with you.’
With some regret I left my home as ordered and met up with my cousin. Twenty Five years later I have watch this small community slowly grow into a stable and reliable town I have lived amongst these people watching them grow not only as a town but the individuals themselves such as my younger Cousin Sima Lees who has grown into fine young woman or Fredegar Müller the young man who though divine favor saved the life of one of the towns folk while becoming blinded in the process. I have found kinship as well as friendships in the most unlike of places. To most of the towns folk you are just Braylin a strange Elf who came to live amongst them and at time has been aloof as your own people but that curiosity has lead you to believe that there is more to these folk than just their heritage, something your people must be enlightened to.
You have even found yourself like-minded mentors whom have taught you how to hone those natural talents while learning new skills.
‘Now remember Braylin to mark down the exact dosage of magnesium in your book so that you don’t set fire to my entire shop next time you make that Alchemist fire said Sharatam that wizened old Gnome who taught you the basics of his craft for no other reason than to pass on his knowledge.’
‘He there fella, did you see something you like or are you just going to keep starring at me all day?’ This was your first formal introduction to Jimes Iggins the very first night you spent in the Seven Silvers. An affable fellow who could chat up a Dwarf while cutting his purse stings without the poor guy even noticing. ‘No I was just admiring your handy work.’ So you watched from afar picking up what you could; practicing the sleight of hand movements while working with old Sharatam in his Alchemy shop. Your formal train came many months later when you stepped to defend Jimes from an unruly Lumberjack to whom Jimes was accused of ‘Short Changing’.
