Alex Novak is part of the once great De Marco house of lesser nobles from Veneto. In Verona the De Marco family had gained notoriety as shrewd businessmen, skilled craftsmen, and innovators of clockwork mechanisms. From a young age Alex was taught of how their great house was forced from their homeland generations ago by the devious Lucciano's, a powerful and greedy Patrician family and forced to hide under a new name. Alex longs to reclaim the honor and status of the De Marco name and return to Veneto and destroy the vile Lucciano's once and for all. The Novaks where the first to exploit the trade value of Lysander's Reach, establishing a moderate silver and iron trade out of Westhaven with mainland Maravi. Milorad and Katarina Novak bore two children, Alex and Razik. From a young age the two siblings were taught the ways of their homeland, learning martial skills, seamanship, engineering and business under the tutelage of their father. Always dutiful in academics, Alex had a mind for business and seemed to have a natural talent and keen eye when it came to aiming a crossbow or the family firearms. The boisterous Razik while fond of the fire and smoke of Venotian weaponry and the thrill of a good fight often neglected his studies, instead pursuing his own desires and the trappings of wealthy living. As the years went by Alex took on responsibilities within the family business, managing the mines, workshops, trade, and other holdings the family controlled. Razik continued to live life for himself, becoming more and more disillusioned with the small island of Lysanders Reach. Razik often argued with his father Milorad about the families purpose and his desire to return to the homeland he had heard so many stories about. One day Milorad took ill suddenly and mysteriously, nothing could be done to heal his sickness, passing away without even a last word. Alex had suspicions but could not produce any proof to support the idea, could Razik have killed their father? Suspicions turned to an almost certainty with the reading of Milorad's last will and testament. Razik, being the eldest son was expected to inherit the entirety of the family fortunes and holdings in keeping with Venotian tradition. However, Milorad had instead split the families holdings among both Alex and Razik to be shared jointly. Furious at his fathers decision, Razik soon left Lysanders Reach, taking with him a sizable fortune and hasn't been seen for years. Alex continues to run the day to day of the Novak business, even acting in Raziks stead to manage his half of the families holdings.
