"Clarity Gage; a simple girl from BWI4 who killed John Benz and turned a nation of slaves into an army!"
-Nym describes Clarity
Clarity, also known as Prime or Zero, was a Taper at one of the Company's warehouses in BWI Zone 4 before defecting to the Outside. She was the only child of Phineas and Marlene Gage, the first Enforcer and the first Birthgiver, respectively.
Clarity was singled out by John Benz as a dangerous individual after she managed to escape from Zero in BWI4. He recognized her potential to become a symbol for the rebels, and planned to integrate her into the Company's hierarchy by pairing her with his clone, Number Eight. However, Clarity and Number Eight escaped HQ together and rebelled against the Company together, eventually culminating in the death of Benz himself as well as a redeemed Phineas Gage.
However, Benz's eighth clone, Number Nine, was also obsessed with Clarity and intended to rule the world with her by his side. Clarity became dedicated to bringing down the Company and became known throughout the Outside as the one responsible for killing the dreaded Zero. As Benz had predicted, Clarity became a symbol of hope for the Resistance. Her status made her a major threat to General Nym's plans to take over the world in the Company's place. Though Clarity unknowingly played her part in Nym's schemes, she eventually came to realize that Nym was even more dangerous than Number Nine.
Appearance
Physical Description
Clarity is a small, petite girl with dark hair, run through with a shock of blonde. She is flexible, and capable of climbing structures and jumping far distances.
Body Features
Clarity has a light-to-tan complexion, with freckles on her shoulders and arms. She has a mole on the inside of her left clavicle and another on the outside of it.
Facial Features
Clarity has freckles across the bridge of her nose. She also has moles over her right eyebrow, on the far right side of her face, on the left side of her nose, and two on her left cheek. She also has thick, dark eyebrows and hazel eyes. Clarity bears a startling resemblance to her mother, making her identity unmistakable to those who once knew Marlene.
Identifying Characteristics
Clarity has a barcode tattooed on her wrist along with the number "0000000000001". She also has a scar on the back of her head at the base of her skull.
Physical quirks
When she had the WhisperChip implanted in her head, she continuously had painful "chills" that were actually shocks administered to her spinal column in an attempt to control her. Even after the WhisperChip is removed, she continued to have a nervous tapping tic, which Junior observed matches the transmission frequency of the Chip. It also just so happens to match Clarity's heartbeat, which has a noticeable heart murmur.
Apparel & Accessories
Clarity originally wore Company Workwear, consisting of a fluorescent vest-like top and tight black pants. She occasionally wore tight black longsleeves. After defecting from the Company, she borrowed some of Cat's clothes, including an army green jacket. She also wears cords around her throat as a kind of necklace.
Specialized Equipment
After being Trained to be a Picker, Clarity was issued a Belayer. She was also given a Disruptor by Phineas Gage and a communication device by Number Nine.
Mentality
Personal history
Early life
Clarity was born the same year as the Great Expansion. Her parents, Phineas and Marlene Gage, were both employed by the Company before the takeover. The CEO, John Benz, saw Phineas’ promise and asked him what he was willing to sacrifice for the company. When Phineas replied “anything”, Benz took him at his word and asked him to give him his unborn daughter. When Phineas refused, Benz revealed an RFID microchip he had patented that was intended to cure and stop the spread of the virus. Phineas became suspicious when Benz offered to “rewrite history”, claiming that everyone would believe him. Phineas realized that the microchips were also capable of regulating the user’s thoughts, and refused to let Benz anywhere near his daughter. Unfortunately, Phineas was subsequently restrained and used as the prototype for the microchip, marketed as WhisperChips. The installation was unsuccessful, and Phineas’ personality was forever changed. He would lose his name shortly thereafter, becoming “Zero” (his number being 000000000000).
When Marlene went into labor, she was horrified to find that Benz was in the hospital room with her. The child was abducted by Benz immediately after her birth. The kidnapping was covered up as a miscarriage, meaning that there were no birth certificates or medical records of her existence. Marlene, however, knew that her daughter was alive, and tried to sue Benz in order to get her daughter back. When this plan failed, as Benz owned the courts, Marlene decided to simply take her daughter by force and took a gun to HQ. Walking in, she was confronted by an Enforcer, asking for her Employee ID Card. She shot him in the chest before running away.
Marlene managed to locate her daughter, whom she and Phineas had agreed to name Clarity, but not without noticing the scar behind the child's ear. She was further disgusted by the barcode and number tattooed on the child's wrist, labeling her as "One". Benz and a pair of Enforcers arrived shortly after she found the infant, and she demanded to know the cause of the scar and the whereabouts of her husband. Benz revealed that the man beside him was Gage. Marlene quickly realized that her husband's brain had been severely damaged and that her daughter had been the subject of an experiment regarding the new WhisperChip technology.
Afterward, Marlene and Clarity were relocated to another region in the Company’s expansive network of locations, namely the fourth Zone in the BWI region. Though Marlene was given a number and barcode and continued to work for the Company, she attempted to undermine the Company's conditioning of her daughter. She worked briefly as the Company's first birthgiver, though Clarity retained no memory of this.
One day, Clarity discovered a box of Marlene's old personal effects, including her old Employee ID card. After asking what the word "Marlene" meant, her mother explained that it was her name. Marlene explained the concept of names and revealed Clarity's own name to her, as well as its meaning. When Clarity did not understand, Marlene said that someday she would understand. From that moment onward, they referred to one another by their real names in private, something that excited Clarity despite it being against the Company's Code of Conduct.
In addition to her old Employee ID, Marlene also managed to keep a number of old media, including music and movies. Occasionally she would enjoy them with Clarity, who was both mystified and terrified by the world they portrayed. Clarity's favorite movies were apparently those involving spies, an interest Marlene indulged whenever possible.
Prime
Clarity's taping partner, known as 2017, had an accident involving the tape machine. Though Clarity pressed the red emergency stop button, it was too late to save 2017's finger. Though bleeding, 2017 refused to let anyone see her wound, insisting that she was able to work. She resisted against all attempts to take her to PrimeCare, something that bewildered Clarity. She offered to take 2017 to PrimeCare herself. On the way to PrimeCare, 2017 vainly attempted to convince Clarity to take her back to the pack lines so they could continue working.
Once at PrimeCare, Clarity was mocked by the other waiting employees for her number. Shortly thereafter, a Health & Safety employee attempted to bring 2017 to the back. Instead, 2017 began to scream and attempted to escape PrimeCare, finally revealing that she had only four fingers left. She begged for Clarity's help when an Enforcer emerged from the back to drag her there. Though 2017 continued to scream for Clarity, the Health & Safety employee thanked Clarity for doing her duty to the Company and offered her three Credit chips. Clarity found herself briefly considering helping 2017, but a powerful chill reminded her that she had done her duty. She accepted the Credit chips and returned to work.
Once back at work, Clarity's coworkers refused to make eye contact with her. 2017's blood had stained Clarity's clothes, and her Taskmaster suggested she buy new Workwear. When 2017 did not return from PrimeCare, Clarity worried that she had been Terminated. At the end of shift, Marlene immediately noticed the blood on Clarity's clothes but did not ask about it until they were inside of their apartment. Clarity told her mother about 2017's accident, and Marlene grimly commented that 2017 had been a nice girl and that it was a shame she wouldn't be seen again.
Returning to work the next day, Clarity was pulled aside by her Taskmaster, who informed her that she was to speak with her Resources counselor before starting work. Confused, Clarity returned to the lobby of the warehouse, where she was mocked by the Resources & Services girls for her number before being led to an office by her Resources counselor. Once in the office, the Counselor accused Clarity of having formed an Attachment to 2017. She revealed that 2017 had been Terminated, and that Clarity was forbidden to speak of her, or else face a warning and a fine. In order to make it easier for Clarity to forget about 2017, she was Accomodated and Removed to another department within the facility.
Though Clarity had considered the Pickers' jobs to be exciting from afar, she found herself anxious at the prospect of scaling shelves of product. She underwent Training on how to Pick and use her Belayer, and was warned that she needed to meet rate, as Picking Androids were going to be implemented soon. Initially confused as to why she would be Removed to a department that would soon be obsolete, Clarity felt another chill down her spine and decided not to question the Company's decision.
Clarity's first Pick was an extremely stressful one, resulting in her taking several PrimePills in order to calm her nerves.
The Birthing Center
On Clarity's rest day, Marlene announced that they would be going to the Birthing Center . Clarity was excited at the prospect of getting a little brother, as well as seeing real Birthgivers at work. Her mother asked her to pay close attention while there.
Once in the Birthing Center, Clarity was initially disappointed by the ordinary surroundings before going to see the children in Class A. She relished in how the children were well taken care of, and attempted to guess which one her mother would choose to be her brother. She was briefly terrified at the prospect of choosing the wrong child when her mother asked to see the other children, shocking the Trainers and the Health & Safety employee. The Health & Safety employee obliged Marlene's request, and took them to see the Class B children. Clarity saw the children watching an educational program on the Holoscreen, in which they were being conditioned to buy products and trust the Company. Despite the darkened room, Clarity noticed that the children were not as well-groomed as the others in Class A.
Despite the Health & Safety employee's best efforts, Marlene insisted on seeing the children in Class C. Clarity saw that the children were down for a nap, but noticed that the children seemed to be making quiet sounds. When she stepped forward to investigate, she was reprimanded by the Health & Safety employee, though her mother smiled. Clarity realized that it wasn't the children making the noises, but rather their blankets, which were whispering messages to them in their sleep. Something about the situation made Clarity extremely uncomfortable, though she wasn't sure why.
The following two classes were in chaos, with dirty children and not enough toys to go around. The Trainers watched them from afar, giving them little nurturing or instruction. The children in Class E were too small, as Clarity saw, and she worried that her mother would choose her brother from that group. When one of the children in Class E became too aggressive with one of its toys, one of the Trainers extended what Clarity recognized as a shock baton. Though she attempted to look away, Marlene forced her to watch as the Trainer hit the child over the head with the baton. The child convulsed on the floor for a brief moment before returning to its play as if nothing had happened. Clarity felt the brief urge to hit the Trainer with the shock baton before experiencing a shock of her own and deciding against it.
When Marlene asked to see more children, the Health & Safety employee admitted that they had no more children, but that they had Vessels available. Though Marlene noticeably hesitated, she agreed to see the Vessels. Clarity was disgusted by the Birthgivers' swollen stomachs, as she had never seen a pregnant woman before. When Marlene appeared displeased with the available Vessels, the Health & Safety employee offered to let her choose Seed and a Vessel to create the perfect child. Marlene once again reluctantly agreed, and she and Clarity followed the Health & Safety employee to the Insemination room.
Once there, Clarity and Marlene were allowed to peruse a selection of vials of Seed. While in the Insemination Room, a Birthgiver was forcibly dragged into the room by Enforcers and restrained while an Android inserted Seed into her body. The woman screamed as the procedure was carried out, and Clarity was horrified. Though the Health & Safety employee attempted to take Clarity and Marlene out of the room, Marlene insisted they stay to find the Seed she wanted.
Finally, Marlene decided that she didn't want to adopt another child after all, bewildering both Clarity and the Health & Safety employee. On the way out of the Birthing Center, they passed by the Birthing room, where Clarity saw several Birthgivers going into labor--most of them were heavily sedated and seemingly asleep, whereas one was screaming and thrashing violently. The Health & Safety employee advised them to ignore her, as she had been insubordinate. She assured them that most Birthgivers feel no pain whatsoever throughout their time as a Vessel.
Once back at their apartment, Clarity bombarded her mother with several questions. Marlene attempted to guide Clarity to the answers herself, which only served to frustrate her more. When she failed to get the answers she wanted from her mother, Clarity took to searching the Web for the answers she sought. When several cursory searches turned up nothing useful, Clarity searched more specific inquiries, turning up several domains and images that had been taken down by the Company. Confused and conflicted, Clarity gave up her search and went to bed, still tormented by images from the Birthing Center.
Clarity got little sleep. She eventually managed to doze off, only to be awoken by a sharp banging. She immediately came to the conclusion that there was someone attempting to break into the apartment. Clarity decided that she could possibly stop them by setting off an alarm within the house that would alert the Enforcers. However, when Clarity reached the front door, it was blown off of its hinges to reveal that it was the Enforcers themselves who were attempting to break into the apartment.
Clarity was immediately paralyzed with fear, only for Marlene to step between her and the Enforcers. When the Enforcers claimed that someone in the household had broken the Company's Code of Conduct and performed illegal Web searches, Marlene admitted to her crimes and was taken away by the Enforcers. Clarity remained behind, stunned and alone. One of the Enforcers suggested she learn a lesson from the situation. Clarity attempted to plead with them to let her mother stay, but to no avail.
The next day, the other employees at the warehouse avoided Clarity, apparently aware of Marlene's capture by the Enforcers the night before. Clarity asked the Resources employees to bring her mother back, a request that was only answered with laughter. Clarity spent the rest of the day in a haze, performing her regular work as if she were simply an Android.
Once she returned home, Clarity began to fix herself dinner. She stared blankly at the little box in front of her while the daily required viewing news droned on in the background. In a fit of frustration and anger, Clarity threw her fork at the holoscreen, smashing it. She staggered backward, only to recognize a camera lens falling out of it. A sudden realization dawned on her, and she felt sick to her stomach. She immediately went to take her PrimePills, only to decide not to and flush them away. She became more determined than ever to rescue her mother from the Enforcers.
Escape to the Outside
The next morning, Clarity briefly considered packing more workwear and some food into her ClearPack, though she decided against it. Once she hit the street, she noticed that the people were more hushed and hurried than usual. She immediately recognized that there was an increased Enforcer presence, and she wondered if they had always been there and she had simply not noticed them before. However, upon getting on the Pod to the warehouse, Clarity saw that there were several Enforcers there as well. Clarity saw something in the eyes of another woman on the Pod that prompted her to stop the Pod and disembark.
Once off the Pod, Clarity heard the clicking boots of the Enforcers behind her, and knew that they had been sent after her. Though unfamiliar with her surroundings, she managed to slip down an alleyway and break into a run. She could hear the Enforcers running after her, extending their shock batons. She used her newly-learned climbing skills as well as her Belayer to scale the buildings around her and evade the Enforcers for a time.
However, the Enforcers were trained to deal with such situations, and Clarity was not. She eventually found herself faced with the massive white wall that separated BWI Zone 4 from the Outside, where she believed depraved and uncivilized people known as Outsiders lived. However, when faced with the Enforcers or the Outsiders, Clarity quickly made a decision. Before ascending the wall, she noticed that one of the Enforcers chasing her had use of only one eye, something that set him apart from all of the other Enforcers. As she escaped, she could hear him promising to find her.
Though shaken by her encounter with the Enforcers, Clarity was in awe at the world beyond the wall. From the top of the wall, she could see "mounds of earth", in reality the Appalachian Mountains, the likes of which she had never imagined. She had never imagined there would be so much green in the entire world, and quickly descended to the ground.
The Outsiders
Clarity explored the countryside before stumbling upon the ruins of a town. While there, she encountered a pair of Outsiders. She was initially terrified of them, though apparently transfixed by how they were dressed. When the girl noticed her, she happily introduced herself as Cat and her companion as Blue. They asked Clarity if something was going on within the zones, claiming that she was the second new Outsider they had found in a single week. They decided to bring her back to their encampment. On the way there, they encountered several strawberry plants and showed Clarity how to harvest them. Clarity recognized them as her favorite flavor and was delighted by their richness.
Once at the Outsiders' encampment, however, Clarity was met with suspicion by Rod, a well-liked young man among the Outsiders. He became even more suspicious when Clarity admitted that she already had a name of her own, as well as revealing her number. Rod demanded to know who she was, believing that she was somehow related to Zero, a particularly infamous Enforcer. When Clarity recognized the one-eyed Enforcer's description as the man who had been following her, Rod became even more suspicious and demanded she leave. Blue and Cat came to her defense, and insisted that they would protect her at least until she could fend for herself. Clarity discovered that the other new Outsider they had found was none other than 2017, whom they referred to as "Digits". Digits had taken to alcohol and was often in a drunken state, much to Clarity's alarm.
Shortly after her arrival at the encampment, Clarity was subjected to Cat's makeover, in which she cut Clarity's hair regardless of the Company's Accepted hairstyles. She also discovered a streak of blonde hair that Clarity had attempted to hide for years. When Cat suggested that it was a desirable trait, Clarity hesitantly agreed to not hide it anymore. Cat also let Clarity "borrow" her clothes, including an olive drab military jacket. After "painting" Clarity's face with various products she had recovered from abandoned houses, Clarity emerged from Cat's lean-to to find Blue playing a guitar and other Outsiders dancing to music. Bewildered, Cat explained to Clarity what music was and how to dance. Clarity also noticed that Rod was staring at her. Eventually, he offered to dance with her.
Days later, Clarity had a nightmare in which Enforcers were beating her with their shock batons and kicking her in the stomach. When she awoke, she found herself bleeding, much to her horror. Her screams alerted Cat, who sent for Blue before remaining by Clarity's side. When Clarity began to throw up, Cat held the girl's hair back and attempted to soothe her. Blue arrived and explained that Clarity was experiencing withdrawal from the Company's drugged water, which he referred to as "Pharmageddon". He carefully explained to her that the bleeding was normal, and that it simply meant that the Company's drugs, which included a contraceptive, were leaving her system. Rod appeared briefly and appeared concerned about Clarity's condition before learning why she was upset and derisively calling her weak and suggesting she run back to the Company. After Cat chased him off, Blue told Clarity that she was welcome to return to the Company if she was scared, but reminded her that not many people get to make that choice. When Clarity decides to remain in the Outside, Blue promises her that it would not be easy, but it would be worth it.
Not long after, Rod noticed that Clarity appeared twitchy after an argument. He asked her if she still had her Chip, and she expressed uncertainty about what he meant. Rod flew into a rage, insisting that the Outsiders abandon Clarity and leave her for the Enforcers, as the WhisperChip in her head had tracking functionality. Clarity was horrified by the revelation that she had a microchip in her head and began to cry hysterically. Blue checked for the Chip and found it was still there, causing her to lament that they were all going to abandon her. However, Blue suggested they simply remove it. Rod disagreed, insisting that Clarity was a liability, and the Outsiders began to pack up their lean-tos and leave the encampment.
Blue and Cat remained by Clarity's side, and asked her if she wanted the Chip removed. Blue warned her that the procedure would be extremely painful, as they would be unable to put her under anesthesia. When Clarity agreed, Blue carefully removed the WhisperChip from Clarity's brain while Cat held her hand tightly and spoke to her. After the Chip was successfully removed, Blue began to stitch her back up while Cat went to find ingredients for a poultice. Ever curious, Clarity asked to see the Chip, and Blue explained what it was before remarking that hers was an extremely early model. When Clarity asked what that meant, he responded that he wasn't entirely sure.
Upon making their way back to the encampment, they were stopped by Rod, who expressed concerns over Clarity's condition. He claimed to have watched the entire procedure from a nearby copse of trees, and asked Clarity if she was alright. Rod immediately became defensive when Blue and Cat teased him for his apparent concern. He attempted to brush them off by insisting they get into the rusty Volkswagen bus before the Enforcers came so they could find somewhere else to camp. Rod searched the bus for alcohol to help disinfect Clarity's wound. Once they started moving, a drowsy and drunken Digits woke up in the back of the bus.
Rod ended up driving eastward to the ruins of the city of Baltimore, where he saw the ruins of a grocery store that appeared untouched. The Outsiders decided to bring Clarity along, even giving her the "honor" of throwing the first brick through the store's windows. Once inside, they gathered what food and supplies they could, with Digits lingering in the alcohol aisle. Cat and Digits took to pushing Clarity around in a shopping cart while Blue and Rod checked the neighboring Smart Homes for packages. Clarity is disgusted by the piles of unopened packages outside of the Smart Homes, and realizes that many of the packages likely originated from the warehouse where she and Digits once worked. She asked Cat about her Attachment to Blue, and Cat explained that they were in love. When Clarity didn't understand, Cat attempted to explain. Rod managed to shoot one of the Company's delivery drones out of the sky with a slingshot, prompting Blue to suggest they take the drone apart to fashion cybernetic fingers for Digits.
Shortly thereafter, Rod showed Clarity an instant film camera he recovered from one of the Smart Homes. He took a picture of Clarity with it before taking a picture of both of them together. He admitted that the camera meant a lot to him because it reminded him of his parents. When Clarity asked him about his parents, he reluctantly admitted that they were both Outsiders who were killed by Enforcers when he was very young. Clarity told Rod about her own mother, and how she was taken away by the Enforcers. Rod attempted to give Clarity the camera as a gift, but she insisted that he keep it, as it was special to him. He then replied that she should have it, as she was special to him, too. Clarity was left confused by the encounter and she awkwardly asked Cat about it. Cat suggested that that it was the same kind of Attachment that she had with Blue, causing Clarity to become flustered and embarrassed.
HQ
The next day, Rod announced that they would be making a cross-country trip to the Company's headquarters. Clarity was excited by this announcement, as she believed that was where her mother had been taken. Rod planned to travel westward by use of the abandoned I-70, without realizing that it ended in the former state of Utah before reaching the west coast. Following this route, Clarity and the Outsiders departed from the BWI region and passed through PIT, CMH, CVG, SDF, STL, MCI, DEN, and finally SLC.
Once they reached I-70's terminus, Rod mistakenly navigated southward along I-15, passing through the LAS region before ending up in abandoned Los Angeles. Blue recognized where they were and directed Rod northward. After a brief argument, Rod opted to simply follow the coastline rather than Blue's directions. Clarity was disappointed they would have to leave, as she was in awe at the ocean. Her thrill likely influenced Rod's decision to follow the coastline. His route took longer than Blue's route would have, and led them through SJC, PDX, and throughout SEA before they were forced to backtrack at the Strait of Juan de Fuca. They followed the Puget Sound back southward before moving northward on the east side and finding HQ there.
Clarity scaled HQ's walls with her belayer and helped the Outsiders follow after her. Once inside the zone's walls, they were forced into hiding by the strong Enforcer presence. After a brief period of planning, the Outsiders attacked HQ itself in an extremely unorganized fashion. Despite this, Clarity managed to use her belayer to scale the building's walls and infiltrated Benz's office. Once there, she was confronted by John Benz himself, who called her by name before attempting to question her. After revealing her father's identity, Benz grew tired of Clarity's refusal to answer his questions and had her detained.
Number Eight
Clarity was brought to HQ's interrogation room daily to be interrogated and tortured by Enforcers. They asked her about the Resistance, which she knew nothing about. When it became clear that the Enforcers were making no progress with her, Benz decided to replace her Enforcer interrogator with Number Eight.
When Clarity came to the interrogation room and found Number Eight, she was taken aback. Despite her misgivings, she found herself curious and concerned about the boy. Her compassion toward him in turn took him by surprise. Though she did not trust the boy, seeing as he wore a similar uniform to the Suit-class employees, Clarity was more willing to talk to him. During their sessions, Clarity and Number Eight bonded over a mutual love for strawberries as well as their similarly sheltered upbringings. Eventually, Number Eight broke protocol to bring Clarity real strawberries. This prompted Clarity to trust Number Eight and offhandedly reveal the location of her mother's cache of forbidden materials. Though small, Benz and the Enforcement Unit saw it as progress.
Clarity wandered the halls of HQ before stumbling upon a room on one of the higher levels full of tanks. Thinking Number Eight was trapped inside, Clarity attempted to break him out only to realize that the other tanks contained copies of him, each at a different stage of development. She realized that Number Eight was merely a clone of Benz, and cursed herself for beginning to trust him.
Upon her next meeting with Number Nine, she acted coldly toward him. When she revealed that she knew who he was, he demanded to know the location of the cloning room. Though Clarity initially refused him, she did divulge its location, only to be restrained by Enforcers and dragged away from the room, with Number Eight being dragged in the opposite direction. She expressed confusion, insisting that HQ was Number Eight's facility after all. She was informed that she was being taken to see "the doctor".
Upon reuniting with the Outsiders, Clarity began taking lessons from Rod on how to fight, specifically centered around the shock baton Junior had managed to steal from an Enforcer. Rod became increasingly frustrated with both Clarity and Junior's reluctance to fight each other.
The Farm
Clarity was imprisoned at Camp H-377 before attempting to escape.
Congruum
Nym reveals that when they learned that Clarity had killed Benz, many members of the Resistance pledged their lives to her, viewing her as the symbol of rebellion. She was distressed by this news. Even so, she got used to life with the Resistance and even found herself liking it. After a brief discussion with Jack, Clarity embraced her place as the symbol of rebellion and made a deal with Nym. She demanded the right to kill Number Nine herself, as well as the safety of the Outsiders.
During the meeting held by Nym for the announcement of her role and positions, she was surprised by Nym's message that, if she didn't meet all of her obligations as their symbol, she and her friends are dead.
Blue watched the first film put together by the Resistance and claimed that it would end any revolution rather than start it. Nym was offended, saying that she had written it herself. In another meeting, Nym relented and allowed Clarity to speak for herself.
Number Nine revealed that the lab and strain of virus responsible for Digits' death was under the Resistance's control at the time of the leak.
Clarity attempted to attack Nym, causing the Resistance to attack her. She was shot and died in Jack's arms.
Education
Clarity received Training from the Company's Department of Training and Development, culminating in her Choosening. At the ceremony, she was chosen to work for the Department of Labor within a warehouse. It is assumed by her assignment that she was an average Trainee and exhibited no extraordinary skills, talents, or interests.
In addition to her Company-Accepted education, Clarity was also educated about the world by her mother, Marlene. Her mother managed to keep ahold of various Unaccepted materials such as movies and books, which she would share with Clarity. Additionally, she would often take Clarity on trips around BWI Zone 4 in an attempt to open her mind and understand the world around her. She was especially hard-pressed to help Clarity develop critical thinking skills.
Employment
Clarity worked as a Taper for over a year in a warehouse within BWI Zone 4 before Digits' Termination. Following her taping partner's Termination, Clarity was removed to a Picking position, where she was warned to make rate or else face potential Termination due to the introduction of Androids into the workplace.
Mental Trauma
Clarity was traumatized by her visit to the Birthing Center with her mother, as she was forced to witness the abuse of children and the Birthgivers' plight first-hand. The concept of having children became a trigger for her anxiety. Rod told Junior that she suffered from tokophobia, the fear of pregnancy and childbirth. She is implied to have also developed genophobia, or the fear of sexual intercourse.
person.sexuality
Clarity is attracted to males, including Rod and Junior. However, it appears that she may be genophobic or perhaps simply asexual, as she seems averse to sexual intimacy but is clearly romantically attracted to Junior.
Known Languages
Clarity speaks the Accepted Company language.
Personality
Motivation
Clarity is motivated by one thing and one thing only; to bring her mother back home. However, she came to realize the Company 's cruel and totalitarian ways and wants to destroy its hold on the world.

Clarity's father, Phineas Gage, was formerly high-ranking member of the Company's corporate structure. He was remarkable enough to attract the attention of CEO John Benz. Following the failed implementation of the WhisperChip into Gage's brain, he underwent a massive change in personality. He became the Company's first Enforcer, and shortly thereafter the head of the Enforcement Unit. Though hailed as a co-founder of the Company among the working masses, he was feared as "Zero", his number as indicated by his barcode.
Clarity's mother, Marlene, was born the year the Company was founded. She worked for the Company as a young woman prior to the Great Expansion. Following Clarity's birth and abduction, she attempted to recover her through a lawsuit. When this plan fell through, she simply marched into HQ with a gun and killed an Enforcer. After confronting Benz regarding her child's scar and her husband's whereabouts, Marlene was also forcibly outfitted with a WhisperChip. She and Clarity were sent to BWI Zone 4, where Marlene worked briefly as the first Birthgiver before being relegated to warehouse work.
Social Aptitude
Clarity is timid, withdrawn, and extremely cautious of other people. A quiet and shy girl by nature, she has been conditioned to keep to herself by the Company's Training. However, she became fiercely proctective and showed unyielding loyalty towards those who care for her. She also has the (often annoying) habit of asking questions, which often leads her into trouble. She is kind to everyone she meets, and detests lies and cruelty above all else.
Due to a limited vocabulary of Company-Accepted words, Clarity initially could not effectively communicate her thoughts and emotions and had little to no understanding of simple concepts such as friendships and promises. These difficulties communicating often led to misunderstandings between herself and the Outsiders, particularly Rod. Despite this, she was a quick learner and came up with creative ways of explaining concepts. Even after staying with the Outsiders for a period of time, she still struggled to understand complex words and social cues.
