Madeline Dearborn is a blood witch and only daughter of Mathias Noble and Eve Dearborn. Upon realizing that her husband and Lord Azrael were one and the same, Eve fled and hid on the magickal island of Avalon, in a cottage heavily protected by Windigo and several witchhunters. Madeline's mother was murdered by her father in the July after she was born, but she had already been entrusted to Alistair Graymark and sent to live with her aunt and uncle, Ramona and Alexander Graymark. The magickal world was led to believe that Azrael had killed both his wife and daughter before killing himself, though some were skeptical of this and believed that Madeline and Mathias were both alive. Thus, Madeline became known as "the Lost Daughter".
Madeline was raised by the Graymarks as one of their own children before they too were killed by Madeline's father in February of 2006. After the ordeal, Madeline's memories were altered to make her forget about the existence of magick and she was sent to live with her only surviving aunt, Helen Kingsley. The Kingsleys were very cruel to Madeline, abusing her both physically and emotionally, and referring to her magickal abilities as a "defect". Helen apparently hoped that if she didn't expose Madeline to magick, she would not develop magickal powers. However, it soon became evident that she was a witch regardless.
In 2009, Madeline showed her cousin Alice a magick trick involving causing a dandelion to wither and turn to seeds. After Alice was unable to do the same, she told Helen about Madeline's abilities and her treatment worsened. Shortly thereafter, Madeline discovered a spell book and began studying the spells within. She met Duncan Sullivan and learned that she was a witch, and traveled to the magickal island of Avalon, where she met Terrence Highmore and began undergoing private lessons under his father, Cyrus. She befriended Eve Lovelace, Bethany Colbourne, and Daniel Castaneda. She applied to the Pendragon Institute and was accepted and chosen for Willowwand coven. Throughout her school years, Madeline continuously evaded capture by the Ring. However, the fact that she was Lord Azrael's daughter was leaked to the press by Geraldine Miffing in her second year of school, costing her several friends and leading to a certain level of infamy. On the other side, she was hailed by many for being the daughter of Eve Dearborn, who had done great deeds for the magickal world before her untimely demise.
Madeline played a significant role in the War of the Ring. She, Duncan, Bethany, Daniel, and Hunter Wrayburn went on the run following the fall of Avalon to the Ring in order to discover a way in which they might defeat Azrael. In the end, Madeline sacrificed herself first to save her cousin Alice, and after escaping Highmore Manor with Duncan, sacrificed herself a second time in the Brocéliande Forest in order to protect Avalon and her friends. In the Hereafter, Madeline encountered Alistair Graymark, her mother, and the Graymarks, and decided to return to life in order to defeat her father once and for all, deciding to pity him rather than hate him.
After the war, Madeline became involved in the International Council of Witches, eventually becoming warlock. She married Duncan and had seven children, all named after people she and Duncan had known. Because of the extensive torturing Madeline suffered in early 2016, Madeline developed a nervous disease similar to Alzheimer's or Parkinson's, and died at the Observatory in her husband's arms.

Personal history
Early life
Madeline was born to Eve Dearborn and Mathias Noble on February 19, 1998. She was intended to be named Madeleine, after Mathias' mother who died in childbirth. Eve discovered her husband's evil nature as the pregnancy ran its course, and fled from him before the child was born. She attempted to live in secrecy in a clandestine cottage in Avalon, under the protection of Windigo, a resistance organization she founded alongside Alistair Graymark, and several witchhunters.
The first five months of Madeline's life were spent living in secrecy. As such, Madeline's mother grew lonely and would often visit Reuben Nightingale at the Nightingale Estate. She would bring infant Madeline along, and Reuben would sing Madeline to sleep. At some point, Reuben offered to marry Eve and adopt Madeline as his own daughter, ready to leave Avalon behind and live somewhere Azrael would never find them. However, Eve refused because she believed Reuben only offered out of kindness, rather than love. Years later, Madeline and Reuben agreed that if she had accepted, she may still have been alive.
Eve used her gift of the Sight often to foresee when Azrael would come for her. Five months after Madeline's birth, the infant was given to Alistair Graymark to be sent to live with her Aunt Ramona and Uncle Alexander Graymark. Eve was killed shortly thereafter.
Mathias continued to hunt for Madeline, who was being shielded as a member of the Graymark family. Madeline grew up believing Alexander and Ramona were her parents, and that their six children were her siblings. She and her siblings would often visit their grandmother Opal Dearborn and Alistair Graymark. They lived in a large house in Avalon.
Lord Azrael located the Graymarks in February of 2006. Lord Azrael, Adrestia Nightingale, and Cyrus Highmore descended upon the Graymark house on February 6, 2006. Shortly before their arrival, Ramona managed to hide Madeline in a secret room. When Alexander and Ramona refused to tell Azrael where Madeline was, they murdered the entire family. After searching briefly for Madeline, the Ring fled. Alistair and Opal arrived shortly thereafter, and recovered Madeline from her hiding place. Madeline's memories were then altered to omit magick, and were stored in a Memento in the form of her childhood teddy bear, Bobo. She was sent to live with her other aunt, Helen Kingsley, who had taken on a mundane life. Her whereabouts were unknown to everyone but Alistair Graymark.
Life with the Kingsleys
Madeline's Aunt Helen and Uncle Ernest Kingsley had very little understanding of magick, and wanted nothing to do with it. The Kingsleys proudly considered themselves a "normal" family and despised anything out of the ordinary. They lied to Madeline about her family's death, claiming they had died in a car crash. Helen forbade asking any questions, particularly those regarding her parents. In addition, the Kingsleys had no photographs of Helen's family, and did their best to avoid the subject altogether.
Helen resented Madeline for her magick, was was sporadic, but evident. She strongly discouraged any form of imagination, forbidding Alice and Madeline to read fairy tales. The Kingsleys also verbally and emotionally abused Madeline, sometimes depriving her of meals. Their abuse would worsen whenever something unusual occurred. Though their abuse of Madeline was evident, it went unreported to the authorities. Madeline was rarely taken out of the house by the Kingsleys, but attended school alongside Alice. Madeline's surname was legally changed to Kingsley, as Helen believed that Graymark was too odd of a name. She later admitted she believed changing Madeline's name may protect her.
The Kingsleys spoiled and pampered their daughter Alice and paid almost no attention to Madeline. What little attention Helen gave Madeline was negative in its entirety. All of her clothes were hand-me-downs from Alice and rarely fit properly. She was made to sleep in the attic with the Kingsleys' other leftovers and was confined to this space whenever they had company. They also made Madeline do all of the household chores for them, including cleaning. Helen never trusted Madeline to cook, believing she would poison them.
Alice's birthday was marked by a big birthday party and oftentimes a sleepover with other girls from school. Madeline was barred from attending these events. Her own birthday was never celebrated, and she rarely got any gifts.
The Kingsleys hid evidence of Madeline's existence the best they could, having no pictures of her in the house. Among the few people who knew of Madeline were Gladys Sharp, the president of the Homeowner's Association, and Ernest's mother, who would send Madeline birthday gifts that were given to Alice instead.
By contrast, Madeline's cousin Alice took an immediate liking to her and the pair became inseparable. On one occasion, they were caught blowing bubbles in the kitchen at two in the morning while Helen and Ernest were sleeping. Madeline's bubbles were unnaturally large and lasted for hours on end, swelling to the size of the family car, while Alice's were tiny and popped within seconds. Madeline shrieked and giggled when Alice's bubbles popped on the end of her nose.
Whenever the family would go out, Alice would grab onto Madeline's hand protectively, and would refer to her as her sister. The pair made plans to visit each other so often as grownups that their children would become best friends. They would love each other's children as their own, and would be next door neighbors.
Madeline and Alice fought like any other pair of siblings would, but they would hug each other afterwards and they would whisper apologies to one another.
Madeline's only consistent outlet was school, where she attended CLK Elementary School and Washington Middle School alongside Alice. She had no friends at school, because all of Alice's friends thought she was weird. Though Alice did not bully Madeline herself, she would remain silent when her friends teased Madeline. Despite her suffering, Madeline earned good grades at school.
One day after the girls smuggled fairy tales home from the library, Madeline told Alice about a recurring dream she had concerning an island with a violet sky. In an effort to convince Alice that the dreams were real, Madeline performed a magick trick that caused a dandelion to bloom. Alice was at first afraid, but then tried to replicate the spell, only to become frustrated and call Madeline a freak. From that point onward, Madeline was bullied by Alice. She dutifully reported any strange occurrences to Aunt Helen. Helen attempted to pretend as though Madeline did not have powers, referring to it as a "defect", though she never witnessed Madeline's abilities herself.
Introduction to the Magickal World
One summer morning in 2009, Madeline was caught spinning the hands of a clock counterclockwise, causing Alice to tattle on her and be sent to the attic until breakfast was ready. Madeline did the same trick again, this time drawing the attention of Helen and Ernest as well. When they realized that Madeline was responsible, she noticed a boy with oily black hair watching through the window and ran after him. Once outside, she couldn't find him but was confronted by Alice's friends, one of whom teased her about her dead parents. Madeline punched him in the face and fled to the woods, but couldn't manage to find the boy who had been watching her.
Upon returning home, Madeline was grounded for hurting one of Alice's friends and causing a stir in the neighborhood. Confined to her attic room, Madeline discovered a diary called a Book of Shadows, signed by "E". Madeline began practicing the spells within the book.
While practicing spells one day, she encountered the boy who had been watching her before and chased him into the forest. Alice followed after her, complaining that she was embarrassing her. Madeline paused at a fallen-out bridge, though the boy seemed to be floating above it. As Alice approached, threatening to tell Helen about Madeline's behavior, Madeline backed onto the bridge and saw that it was glamoured. The boy told Madeline that she was a witch, which Alice initially teased her for. However, when the boy commented on Alice's jealousy, she ran away, horrified, saying she would tell her mother.
The boy introduced himself as Duncan Sullivan, and showed Madeline a magick trick. He led Madeline to a pond deep in the forest and told her about the magickal world. He spoke of Avalon and the Pendragon Institute, as well as Ipswich Academy. He and Madeline became fast friends, and planned to talk again soon. Upon returning home, Madeline was grounded and kept in her attic bedroom except for meals. However, Madeline managed to sneak out of the house and learn more about magick and the legendary island of Avalon. At one point, Helen discovered Madeline with her Book of Shadows. When Madeline called Helen a mundane, she attempted to hurt Madeline, and the young witch fought back with magick. She fled the Kingsleys' and stayed with Duncan and his dysfunctional parents for a short period of time.
While staying with the Sullivans, Madeline made her first trip to Avalon via the portal in the Sullivans' house. Not understanding how they could have traveled so far so quickly, Duncan took Madeline through two other portals, one leading to Washington, D.C. and the other to Laredo, Texas. The former portal caused a mundane girl, Bethany Colbourne, to investigate the sudden appearance and vanishment of Madeline and Duncan, causing her to learn she was a witch. The latter portal ended with Madeline and Duncan meeting the Castaneda family, who helped Duncan show Madeline and Bethany around Avalon for a brief time.
While window shopping, Madeline and Duncan encountered Noemi Hill, a cousin of Duncan's mother and a friend of Ramona Graymark's. Noemi initially mistook Madeline for her mother before Madeline mentioned that her birth name was Madeline Graymark but that she took her Aunt Helen's name, Kingsley. She believed her family was killed in a car accident. Noemi ended up very unsettled, believing that the Graymark's eldest child was named Ashley, and that she was two years younger than Madeline. Madeline insisted that Ashley was her younger sister, and she was advised to used the last name Kingsley instead of Graymark.
Private lessons
Madeline discovered her wand while shopping in Avalon. Near the end of the shopping trip, she met Terrence Highmore, who immediately recognized her as a powerful blood witch. After being questioned and inspected by Terrence's father Cyrus, she was propositioned to become Cyrus' Ward. The Highmores convinced Celine and Noemi to allow them to take Madeline as their Ward, and she stayed at Highmore Manor. There, she was gifted a Book of Shadows of her own by Terrence, and began taking lessons from those Cyrus considered "experts". Among them were Ignatius Turtledove, Bruscius Southwick, and Justus Everbleed. Cyrus Highmore gave her lessons on the history of magick which were heavily biased toward Heartbanes and against mundanes. At some point, she noticed an inverted pentagram on his arm.
However, Ignatius informed the Headmaster of the Pendragon Institute, Alistair Graymark, that Madeline was being tutored by Cyrus Highmore and various other dark witches. Graymark and Opal Dearborn arrived at Highmore Manor to take Madeline as their own Ward, angering Cyrus and Terrence. Madeline was allowed to stay at the Graymark mansion, and was given lessons by several well-respected witches. She shared some of her lessons with Daniel Castaneda, Eve Lovelace, and Hunter Wrayburn. Due to her magickal upbringing through the Highmore family, Madeline displayed prejudice against mundanes, fueled by her hatred for her Aunt Helen and cousin Alice.
Madeline returned from a Broomstick game to discover her room ripped apart, and that her Book of Shadows had pages torn from it. Further investigation revealed runes scrawled around her bed, and guards were posted on the mansion. Not long after, she developed a rash on her arm from Hunter Wrayburn's touch, and after a brief investigation into him and Thomas Mayfield, he was left with a warning.
Following these attacks, Alistair Graymark took to having private meetings with Madeline on a regular basis, causing Eve to be skeptical of his intentions. During one such meeting, he mentioned that Madeline was a talented witch like her mother, causing Madeline to become suspicious as well, as she believed her parents were mundanes.
On Yule, Madeline received a broomstick from Duncan.
While looking through the gallery at the mansion with Eve, Madeline discovered a painting of her parents. Bringing this to Alistair's attention, he admitted that Helen and her parents were witches, and that Helen appeared to have lost her abilities. Her realization that she was indeed a blood witch reaffirmed her magickal supremacist beliefs. Alistair also revealed that he was her great-grandfather, as he was Alexander Graymark's grandfather.
Intrigued by the prospect of Helen losing her magickal abilities, Madeline and Eve began researching the loss of magick in the Pendragon Institute's library. Bethany attempted to help them, though Madeline doubted she could because she was a mundane. After being barred from entering the Restricted Section, Madeline asked Duncan, who became extremely uncomfortable about the subject. Madeline and Eve then asked Professor Arlo Littlewood, who similarly became uncomfortable and even angry.
When several of Professor Aristaeus Foxglove's griffins were found dead, Madeline managed to learn that they were killed by dark magick. Duncan suspected Hunter was responsible due to his cursing Madeline, but Hunter retorted, mentioning something about a rabbit that enraged Duncan. The ordeal sparked a duel between the two boys, who ended up dueling in a street and cursing Madeline simultaneously. Hunter was banished from the island of Avalon and the Pendragon Institute, ruining his chances of becoming a witchhunter.
Madeline attended Alistair Graymark's 100th birthday celebration on January 3, 2010.
For the first time, Madeline received gifts for her birthday, including some of her mother's books sent to her by her Uncle Ernest. She was pleasantly surprised, as she didn't believe Ernest knew how to send mail by owl. He wrote in his letter not to let Helen know that she had them.
Near the end of May, Eve convinced Madeline to explore the Brocéliande Forest with her. The girls discovered perytons killed by dark magick and realized that Hunter could not have been the culprit of Madeline's misfortune and the dark magick. They were found by Arlo Littlewood, who attended the Institute with Madeline's Aunt Helen. Helen spurned Littlewood's romantic advances and ended up eloping with mundane Ernest Kingsley, leaving Arlo angry and seeking revenge. Arlo revealed that Madeline's parents and siblings were not killed in an accident, but by Lord Azrael and the Ring. He attempted to turn Madeline into the Ring, but was defeated by the girls and escaped.
Afterward, Madeline confronted Alistair about the truth and learned how to use Mementos to view memories. Using her childhood teddy bear named Bobo, Madeline saw that her parents were indeed witches and relived the execution of her family. She saw that Cyrus Highmore was involved in her parents' deaths, and rejected all of his teachings. Traumatized, Madeline shared the news with Eve and Duncan, who comforted her and recommended she return home to rest. Alistair reminded Madeline to return to Avalon when she was ready to continue her lessons.
Applying to the Pendragon Institute
After returning to Calumet, Helen did her utmost to prevent Madeline from returning to Avalon. Everything returned to how it had been before when Gladys Sharp visited and insulted Madeline's parents, enraging the young witch. Gladys' glass shattered and Madeline ran away to the Sullivan house, fearing punishment. Madeline took to floating to climb trees, causing Duncan to worry about her. He became embarrassed when she said that he sounded like Aunt Helen.
Upon arriving in Avalon, she noticed that Hunter was following her around. Despite Eve and Bethany's best efforts to keep him away from Madeline, they took to reading in the library together and sharing tea. Duncan was upset by these events, though Madeline defended Hunter.
Madeline began receiving pamphlets from "Master Matty" at her windowsill, offering to teach her magick and ensuring her admission into the Pendragon Institute. She shared the pamphlet with her friends, admitting she was considering to take him up on his offer. Bethany was immediately mistrustful of Matty, and several of the others said the boy looked vaguely familiar.
Shortly after receiving the pamphlet, Madeline began seeing visions of a woman who looked almost identical to her. One such vision involved the young woman making plans with Alistair Graymark to give away her child, which Madeline recognized as herself. After telling Madame Cymbeline Moonstone, the Seer believed that Madeline had the Sight, an ability usually passed down in families. When Madeline mentioned that her mother, Ramona, did not have such an ability, Madame Moonstone revealed that Madame Dearborn was Madeline's grandmother and possessed the Sight. Bethany immediately became skeptical of the Sight and Madeline's visions, dismissing them as bad dreams.
One night, Madeline had a vision of meeting Matty on a bridge while reading her mother's copy of Pride and Prejudice. Madeline began reading the book on the bridge in the hopes of making the vision a reality, though Matty never showed up.
Madeline knocked Hunter off of his broomstick and stayed by his bedside in the infirmary, feeling guilty.
For Yule, Madeline received Heart Stones from Eve. Hunter and Terrence both attempted to steal them, though they glowed brightest between Madeline and Duncan. She also got a gift from Matty.
While wandering the Institute, Madeline saw someone who she believed is Matty, but after calling after him, he didn't respond. Bethany advised Madeline to stop wasting her time on him, as he was apparently unwilling to speak to her in person.
During a lesson in the History of Magick, Madeline learned that the Graymarks all possess a gray crescent-shaped birthmark, from which their name is derived. She realized that her siblings and father all had one, but she did not. She confronted Alistair Graymark, who admitted that she was actually the daughter of Ramona Graymark's sister, Eve. When Madeline asked about her father, Alistair explained that no one knew his identity.
During a lesson with Turtledove, he caught Madeline writing a letter to her hypothetical father. He became extremely angry and sentenced her to detention, causing Madeline to sheepishly explain that she didn't know who her father was. He scolded her for not paying attention, and served her detention himself.
Madeline became increasingly desperate to get into the Pendragon Institute, and decided to enlist Master Matty's help. He invited her to meet him in the Broceliande Forest. Bethany insisted that Madeline should not go, as the situation seemed suspicious, but Madeline ignored her and ventured into the forest on her own.
After arriving in the forest, Madeline was trapped by dark magick and was unable to escape. She sensed movement in the trees, and was shocked when Bethany appeared. At first believing Bethany was responsible, Madeline was rescued by her friend, who explained that she was researching who Matty was, and after showing the pamphlet to Madame Strathmore, she learned that Matty's real name was Mathias Noble, Lord Azrael's birth name. Bethany and Madeline narrowly escaped the forest and burned all of Matty's gifts.
Pendragon Institute
Alice was late returning home one summer afternoon, and Aunt Helen asked Madeline to look for her. Madeline took the opportunity to wander Calumet, and found Alice at the 5th & Elm Coffee House with a boy named Danny. After being insulted by Danny, Madeline began making her way home. Alice asked Madeline about Duncan before leading her through an alleyway. A goblin appeared climbing out of a trash can, and attempted to attack Alice, referring to Madeline as the "Dark Lady". After Madeline defeated the goblin, she confronted Alice, who should not have been able to see the faerie.
Upon returning home, Alice told her mother that Madeline saved her from a goblin, and Helen allowed Madeline to apply to the Pendragon Institute in the summer of 2011. Madeline was accepted, and began attending the school on September 6, 2011. Madeline was placed into Willowwand coven, though Terrence Highmore attempted to get her changed to Heartbane, where he believed she belonged. Rather than returning to the Graymark mansion, Madeline lived in Willowwand tower alongside the other Willowwand students. She shared her dormitory with six other girls, including Eve Lovelace, Bethany Colbourne, Summer Teaberry, and Charlotte Trembley.
Several of the teachers at the school, including Professor Foxglove and Professor Townsend, mistook Madeline for her mother.
During a Zoology class, Terrence Highmore provoked a griffin and was attacked. Madeline accompanied him to the infirmary, and he was touched by her kindness.
When Wyatt Gray asked Madeline to Homecoming, Terrence became obviously jealous and suggested he disrespect a griffin. At the dance, Madeline ended up humiliating Wyatt, and Terrence punched him out of jealousy.
Shortly afterward, Terrence was attacked by a creature he called a "frog beast". The other students were skeptical of him, believing he was bothering the griffins again.
Terrence took to following Madeline everywhere, and Eve and Bethany began to notice. Rumors circulated concerning Madeline and Terrence, believing that they are a couple.
Terrence managed to capture his "frog beast", and Madeline recognized the creature as a goblin. The faerie continued to refer to Madeline as the Dark Lady as they brought it to the headmaster to be interrogated.
During spring break, Madeline attended the Ostara Festival with the Castanedas, Duncan, and Bethany. While there, she met with Terrence, furthering rumors about them. The festival was attacked in the night by the Ring. While Madeline's friends managed to escape the burning campsite, Terrence brought Madeline to the east side of the camp, where he claimed there was no danger. Madeline became suspicious of his family's loyalties, and was discovered hiding in the Highmores' tent by the Bloodbourne brothers, Erebus and Tartarus. Erebus recognized her and insisted they turn her in to Lord Azrael before Terrence intervened and implied that Madeline had no idea who she was. Upon returning to the Institute, Madeline was confronted by her friends, who saw her running off with Terrence during the attack. They warned her that he was very dangerous, making her upset.
Madeline returned to researching goblins, and found that, in order to be organized, they must be controlled by a higher entity.
Madeline and Duncan were paired up for palm reading in their Divination class, and Duncan asked Madeline to the Beltane Ball. She rejected his invitation, claiming that she had to study, when in reality she was only interested in attending the dance with Terrence. Both of them agreed not to go to the dance without one another, though they believed they couldn't go together because of Madeline's association with Alistair Graymark. Just before the dance, Madeline received what had once been her mother's dress as a gift from Alistair, who was apparently aware of her relationship with Terrence.
Terrence convinced her to go to the dance with him, disregarding others' opinions. Madeline and Terrence attended the Beltane Ball together, to everyone's astonishment. Though nearly all of their friends were civil, Primrose Huntingdon was noticeably jealous and Daniel was angry, considering Madeline a traitor. Duncan confided in Madeline that Daniel was jealous of Bethany's date to the dance.
Following the dance, Madeline saw Terrence on the edge of the forest and went to investigate. Before she entered the forest, another Terrence appeared from the castle and the one in the forest disappeared. She took to calling the Terrence in the forest "Not-Terrence", and struggled to understand what she had seen.
After further research, Madeline came to believe the goblins were being controlled by an ogre.
Madeline decided to trek into the Broceliande Forest to confront the ogre, but Terrence insisted that she couldn't go alone and joined her. The two of them fought Balogog together. Balogog revealed that he was under Lord Azrael's orders to recover Madeline, whom he referred to as the "Dark Lady".
Terrence convinced Madeline to stay at Highmore Manor for the summer. When Cyrus found inconsistencies in Madeline's story, she admitted that she only recently learned that her mother was a woman named Eve Dearborn. Cyrus was surprised and admitted that he once knew her mother, and Calista told Madeline that they had a surprise waiting for her.
The "surprise" ended up being Lord Azrael himself. Madeline was dressed in black and forced to attend a meeting with the Ring, where Azrael introduced Madeline as his daughter. She ended up fainting and refused to believe that he was her father. After being punished by Azrael and Cyrus, she slipped into the cellar to dose herself with alcohol. While in the cellar, she encountered a drunken Calista, who informed her that she could not escape, and must join the Ring for her own sake and Terrence's. Feeling angry and betrayed, Madeline escaped Highmore Manor.
Windigo
Madeline ended up at Duncan Sullivan's doorstep early in the morning. She was let in immediately and stayed there briefly before Celine contacted her cousin to let her stay at the Nightingale Estate. Madeline felt strangely lost and at home in the old house, and rarely saw the owner, Reuben Nightingale. She had consistent nightmares concerning her father. When her friends arrived to go shopping together, Madeline refused to leave, having fallen into a deep depression. She took to wandering the house by herself, and found a bedroom decorated in Willowwand colors. She was confronted by Reuben, who revealed that he knew about her parentage. He gave Madeline an album about her mother, including photographs and newspaper clippings. He mentioned that her mother founded Windigo, a rebel organization that fought the Ring.
Shortly afterward, Madeline saw Windigo first-hand. She was asked to join their meeting, arousing Hunter's suspicions. Turtledove informed them that Lord Azrael was willing to give Madeline a second chance after escaping Highmore Manor, and Windigo beseeched her to use the opportunity and her relationship with Terrence to spy on the Ring. She was affronted and disturbed by their plan, but agreed to do so. Hunter confronted her about what Windigo would want with her, and she made up a lie, refusing to tell any of her friends the truth about her father.
A few days later, Helen appeared on the Nightingale Estate's doorstep, demanding that Reuben relinquish Madeline to her. Though Reuben was initially hesitant, Helen convinced him that it was what Eve would have wanted. Madeline nearly referred to him as her father, though he cut her off because the thought was too painful for him. He reminded her that she is always welcome. On the way back to the Kingsley house, Helen demanded to know what was going on, and Madeline told her that she was actually Eve's daughter with Mathias Noble. When she told Helen that Eve was dead, murdered by her own husband, Helen nearly crashed the car and spent several minutes crying.
Hunter came to visit the Kingsley household. Alice immediately liked him and attempted to flirt with him before realizing he was a witch. He warned Madeline that there was a mass breakout at Svalbard, and once again asked Madeline why Windigo believed she needed to know such information. He found the locked chest in the attic, and unlocked the chest with a spell before being asked to leave by Helen. On the way back to his house, he implied that Helen was still capable of magick, and reminded Madeline that he was willing to help her if she needed him. Upon returning to the house, the chest was gone. Madeline managed to find it in Helen's room and unlocked it, finding her aunt's Books of Shadows, wand, and other magickal tools. Helen allowed Madeline to return to Avalon to continue her education so she could learn to protect herself.
Upon arriving at the Pendragon Institute, Madeline noticed Geraldine Miffing inspecting nearly every aspect of the school. She learned that Miffing was an Auditor from the International Council of Witches, dispatched every seven years to investigate conditions at the school. Miffing took an immediate dislike to Madeline, and gave her detention at every opportunity.
After avoiding Terrence for a month, Madeline met him at the Observatory. He was upset with her for leaving him, but admitted that he still wanted to be with her. She attempted to break up with him, using their opposite positions as an excuse. She admitted that Windigo wanted her to exploit her relationship with him to spy on the Ring. She admitted she was unwilling to change him, and he convinced her to stay.
During one meeting with Miffing, she slipped Truth Serum into Madeline's tea and interrogated her regarding her father. Madeline got angry, but Miffing promised to keep their conversation a secret.
However, the next day, Madeline was threatened by several of her classmates, as Miffing leaked Madeline's secret to the press. Several of Madeline's friends distanced themselves from her, including Charlotte. On the other hand, several of the Heartbane students apologized for bullying her and treated her with fear and respect. Daniel became spiteful toward her, whereas Hunter threatened to kill her or turn her into the Council himself.
Madeline consulted with Reuben just before her Esbat, where he gave her advice on how to avoid conviction. He reassured her that she was unlikely to be found guilty, as her mother was well-loved by the Council.
Madeline was brought to the Hall of Myrddin in electrum chains by Wendalyn Blythe and was surrounded by witchhunters. She was interrogated before the Council and administered Truth Serum by Turtledove. Despite Miffing's argument of guilt, Madeline was cleared of all charges. Turtledove informed the Ring that the Truth Serum she was given was a decoy, and Cyrus Highmore met her after the Esbat, discussing her plans and expressing pride. She was followed around by two witchhunters everywhere she went for months.
Hunter reconciled with Madeline after she was found not guilty, claiming that the Council never made mistakes. She didn't bother to point out that they made a mistake by accusing her in the first place.
Madeline received a telepathic message from her father telling her that her time to choose was drawing to a close, and she fell into an even deeper depression.
Madeline attempted to sneak out of Willowwand Tower to meet Terrence in the Observatory, but was caught by Wendalyn and Artemas Fairview. They admitted that they knew she was innocent, though they were under orders to keep an eye on her. Though they did not permit her to see Terrence, they were very kind to her and told her about her mother. Eventually, she convinced them to allow her to go on walks in the forest. She took to reading in the forest alone, and encountered Duncan there. They began taking walks together, making Terrence jealous.
Eventually, the witchhunters stopped following her though her period of surveillance was not over. She managed to meet Terrence in the Observatory to discuss the Ring, only to be discovered by Miffing. Daniel came to Madeline's defense and dispatched Miffing.
Madeline once again went to Highmore Manor at the start of summer break, where she met her father again and carefully refused to join the Ring, claiming that it was too dangerous at the moment. Turtledove agreed, and Azrael was placated for the time being. Even so, when she spoke up in defense of her mother, she was tortured briefly and suffered an injury to her head. She left Highmore Manor despite Terrence's pleas for her to stay and went to the Nightingale Estate. Reuben revealed that he was once in love with Madeline's mother, and that Duncan was in love with Madeline. He asked her to give him a chance, and she ended up crawling into his bed for comfort.
Third year
Helen once again turned up at the Nightingale Estate, searching for Madeline. Though Reuben attempted to keep Madeline at the Estate, Helen insisted she come with her after seeing her injuries. She was appalled by Azrael's treatment of her and took Madeline to a hospital, where she fainted on the way to the examination room. She was helped by Lamia Blutsauger, a vampire girl and classmate of Madeline's, only to be accosted by Malphas Periculum and almost sedated and branded in the name of the Ring. She was rescued by Doctor Pureheart, who dismissed Periculum and examined Madeline. He advised her not to take any mundane painkillers, though he did not elaborate on her condition.
After leaving the examination room, Madeline was met by a sea of reporters asking her to comment on the warlock's death. She asked the doctor to help her deal with the reporters, only to be taken by Wendalyn and Cristóbal Castaneda to the Castaneda ranch in Laredo. Windigo had an impromptu meeting there, where they discussed Madeline's speech. She also met Duncan at the 5th and Elm Coffeehouse, where he dismissed the speech as a power grab for Windigo. Despite his misgivings, Madeline gave her speech and won several people to her cause.
Upon returning to the Castaneda ranch, Madeline found Alistair Graymark in her bedroom. He congratulated her on her speech, and expressed a desire to move past his lies, to which she refused. During her stay at the Castaneda ranch, she received no letters from Terrence and became depressed once again.
The eve before their first day at the Institute, she fell asleep on Daniel Castaneda's bed and was joined by Duncan at Daniel's urging. After arriving at the Institute, she went to the Observatory, where she was confronted by Duncan, who attempted to admit his feelings for her. After overhearing the conversation, Duncan and Terrence fought briefly before Madeline sent Duncan to the infirmary and Terrence told Madeline to leave him. Confused and grief-stricken, Madeline stomped off after Duncan.
After learning that Madeline and Terrence are no longer together, Hunter began making advances toward Madeline. He asked her to go on a walk around campus with him in an attempt to make Terrence jealous, and the boys argued briefly before being broken up by Professor Circe Dreamcutter.
Angus Pangborn ended up in the infirmary because he was bitten by a Carrion Sprout on the way to Alistair's office. Madeline noticed that Terrence was distancing himself from his friends as well as her.
Madame Dearborn was poisoned by oleander in her tea at a staff meeting, and was hospitalized for several weeks. Her post was taken up by Professor Townsend.
Professor Virtus Monteverde discovered that a bottle of wine Alistair had given him was poisoned. Madeline commented that Alistair didn't like wine. She let it slip to Terrence that he has a fondness for fruit.
Primrose ended up in the infirmary after eating belladonna berries disguised as grapes.
Daniel was cursed and unable to move, and Bethany sat by his bedside in the infirmary. Madeline saw visions of her father and Turtledove discussing Alistair Graymark, and discerned that the attacks were meant for him.
Madeline overheard Turtledove and Terrence discussing something important.
Gabriel Thornblood ended up in the infirmary after being poisoned by Lupercalia chocolates he stole from the headmaster while serving detention.
While in Avalon with Eve, Madeline accidentally scried and saw something about Terrence.
Rena Rehmeyer was cursed, and Duncan suspected Terrence was behind it. Madeline visited Rena in the infirmary and used the Sight to attempt to access her memories. She realized that Rena was placed under a curse by Terrence, but did not reveal this to Rena or Nurse Althea.
Madeline overheard Gabriel and Terrence arguing, and attempted to console Terrence. He insulted her and stormed away.
Madeline visited the Observatory and found Terrence crying alone. She took to visiting every night, and found him there almost every day. Eventually, she confronted Terrence and offered him support. He took her to Heartbane dungeon and they ended up having sex. The next morning she noticed the pentagram branded on his arm and was enraged. Terrence attempted to explain the situation to her, and she was disappointed but wanted to help him.
Madeline and her friends broke into the Archives of the Hall of Myrddin to recover important documents concerning her mother. Among the documents she found, there was a letter from her grandmother detailing a prophecy regarding herself and her father. Among the members of the Ring sent to ambush her was Cyrus Highmore, who was enraged to see her fighting against her father. Her father attempted to steal the letter, but she burned it and fell unconscious.
Upon waking up in the infirmary, she found Terrence and Eve waiting for her. Eve admitted she thought Madeline was going to die, and Terrence admitted that his father forbade him from talking to her, but that he doesn't care. Alistair also visited her, and she noticed his gangrene.
Madeline followed Duncan and Terrence into an abandoned classroom and was infuriated when Duncan cursed and almost killed Terrence. She stayed by Terrence's bedside and refused to talk to Duncan until Hunter reconciled their relationship.
During a visit with Alistair, she discovered that he stole the Noble family ring, and that it was cursed and the cause of her headaches. She insisted that the ring couldn't have caused Alistair's gangrene, as it didn't harm her. Alistair struggled to find the meaning of this.
Alistair called Madeline to his office to offer her advice, and she found the entire meeting strange. Terrence attempted to convince her to run away with him, but she insisted she needed to fight. Later that night, Terrence snuck out of the infirmary and she followed him, and saw him help the Ring assassinate Alistair. Enraged, she threatened him and claimed to hate him. Madeline found Alistair at the foot of the Headmaster's Tower, surrounded by the student body and staff. Madeline cried over the Headmaster's body, realizing all of the time she had wasted arguing with him. She refused to move from his side until Duncan came to comfort her, at which point she attempted to be alone but was confronted by Terrence and captured by Adrestia Nightingale. Terrence managed to convince Adrestia that Madeline was willing to join the Ring now that she had seen the extent of the Dark Lord's power, and she was taken to Highmore Manor, where she was to wait for her father.
Fourth Year
After arriving at Highmore Manor, Cyrus forced Adrestia to release Madeline, as they had been asked to treat her gently. Madeline was disgusted by Cyrus' pride in his son, and was too tired and shocked to fight Terrence when he offered to help her get ready for her father's arrival. She was surprised when Terrence helped her escape from the Manor.
Madeline ended up in Calumet, and made her way to the Wrayburn house before staying with the Sullivans. When Celine mentioned that no one but Alistair knew where Helen lived for several years, Madeline returned once again to the Kingsleys.
One night, Madeline and Duncan were sitting at their spot under the willow tree near the pond when Duncan admitted that his favorite thing about the Institute was the view of the night sky. Madeline created a spell that destroyed light pollution, allowing Duncan to stargaze. The pair almost shared a kiss before Alice interrupted. When Alice began to act strangely, Duncan revealed that he dropped Stray Sod everywhere they went to prevent Alice from following them. After walking her home, he kissed her.
Madeline enlisted Duncan's help in searching for information on her father's childhood. They discovered that both Saint Augustin's Home for Friendless Children, the orphanage he lived in, and the Keweenaw Home for Unwed Mothers, where he was born, were demolished. In place of the maternity home was a Burger King, and Madeline discovered that her grandmother was still buried underneath it. Duncan admitted that when he was a child, he used to visit the orphanage to learn, and that an old woman there gave him his treasured music box.
Madeline learned that Madame Dearborn was the new headmistress of the Institute, and Helen agreed to let her attend another year. She noticed that there were far less students than previous years, and that Terrence was among those missing.
Madeline received a letter from Terrence, saying goodbye, as he believed he is about to die. She initially couldn't believe the news and was heartbroken. The next day, The Oracle published a two-sentence obituary for Terrence, claiming he died in a tragic accident. Everyone at the Institute knew that he was really killed by Lord Azrael, though they couldn't agree on why. Primrose was inconsolable and confronted Madeline, terrified for her own life because her father made her believe that she would be safe because she was a blood witch. Jett Blacque came to comfort Madeline and told her some of the details of Terrence's death.
At the school picnic, Madame Dearborn attempted to make a flowery speech, but was interrupted by Daniel, who informed the student body that Terrence helped Madeline escape from Highmore Manor, and that was why he was killed. He claimed that Terrence was a hero, and the Heartbanes, who had been living in fear, raised their glasses.
Madeline became increasingly irritated that she was unable to vote in the upcoming election for the new warlock, but Hunter attempted to comfort her by claiming that the best candidate would win. When Miffing was elected the new warlock, riots broke out across the world, including in Avalon. Hunter defended the results, claiming the Council always knew what was best.
The Institute's defenses continued to crumble, and Madeline helped Windigo and the witchhunters defend the school from the Ring.
Madeline was trapped with Hunter when learning to teleport. While both of them ended up missing the lesson, he admitted that he had feelings for her since they were young children, as he used to watch her walk home when her classmates wouldn't let her on the school bus.
Madeline attempted to console Bethany when Daniel began to date Summer. She was surprised to see Bethany spending time with Wyatt, and learned that she is only doing so to make Daniel jealous. Madeline made Bethany confront Summer, who admitted she had no idea that it was upsetting Bethany so much. She informed Madeline and Bethany that Daniel had asked her to pretend to date him to make Bethany jealous, and admitted that she was a lesbian. Madeline began to become amused by Bethany and Wyatt.
Madeline attended one of the school's Broomstick games at Hunter's urging, and overheard him saying that he would win the game for them. He ended up falling off of his broom and she rushed to his aid.
Following Miffing's inauguration as Warlock, the Ring appeared to be driven back from the Institute. However, their next attack was stronger than ever before, and the Institute fell to the Ring. The curriculum changed and members of the Ring replaced several of the staff. Several people, including Professor Monteverde and the Ryegate twins, went missing.
On her birthday, Madeline received several anonymous gifts, undoubtedly from Heartbane students. Among them was a recipe for a happiness potion, which she shared with Madame Dearborn and Primrose, and a parchment detailing new curses the Ring had developed, which she shared with Windigo.
Madeline and Duncan were chosen by Erebus Bloodbourne to be used as examples of how to torture someone with magick during Curses class. When Duncan refused to hurt Madeline, she insisted that Erebus should perform the spell himself to teach the class how to do so. She suffered torture for several minutes before being rescued by Turtledove and taken to the infirmary. Her friends attempted to convince her to escape, but she refused, stating that her place was at the school.
Madeline began to attempt to see visions of her father so she would know when he would try to whisk her away to Highmore Manor. Though she saw no visions, Turtledove gave Hunter a message telling Madeline that the Ring was coming for her. Hunter helped Madeline escape on a Peryton.
On the Run
Madeline took to wandering the countryside for several days before hearing Revolution Radio. She was given a photograph of the location from which it was broadcast to teleport to.
Upon arriving at Revolution Radio, she was greeted by Alexander and Cassadee Ryegate. She gave a speech on Revolution Radio reminding the magickal world to fight against the Ring, and that they were not alone. They were attacked while on the air, but managed to escape.
Madeline returned to Avalon to continuing terror attacks. She went to Avalon Cemetery to visit Alistair's grave and her mother's, only to be confronted by Terrence. She at first believed he is a ghost, but realized he was alive. She was at first relieved, but became upset when he asked her to run away with him. She refused his offer, intent on continuing the fight, and returned to Calumet.
Madeline had a nightmare where she and her father turned into wolves and she attacked Duncan. Shaken by her nightmare, she awakened to find the Kingsleys, Duncan, and Hunter by her bedside. Hunter informed them that the Ring still holds Avalon, and that the house is liable to explode. Helen expressed pride in Madeline, and admitted her guilt about her sisters' deaths. A contingent of Windigo arrived to take the Kingsleys to a safehouse, and Madeline, Hunter, and Duncan escaped just in time.
Madeline, Duncan, and Hunter took to portal-hopping to collect Bethany and Daniel.

Later life
Madeline hid multiple wands all over her house hidden in places only she knew. Under her pillow, under her bed, under the couch. Just in case. She couldn't stay in very small rooms. She felt trapped, and her throat would start convulsing and her eyes would sting. Madeline had gotten so used to spending months having one small meal per day that sometimes she forgot she was supposed to eat. She rolled in her sleep once and hit her wrist against the night stand on accident. When she woke up with pain in her wrist, her whole body froze. It wasn't until she saw the bruise that she was able to calm down because her father hadn't returned. Madeline spent most of the post-war discovering who she was and what she loved, other than the Lost Daughter and the Savior of the Magickal World. These were things she never had time to think about, never had time to experiment with, never had time to experience. Sometimes she wondered if coming back had been the right choice, because it hurt so bad on some days she couldn't take it. Madeline pulled back to herself when the date of her "death" neared every year. Her friends did everything in their power to bring her out of it. Madeline and Duncan talked about the war some nights, as both saw what Azrael was capable of. Both understood. Madeline got the sudden desire to travel all over the world. She was joined by Duncan, and sometimes Bethany and Daniel or her other friends. Madeline visited Reuben's grave and told him how things were going in her life, how she was coping, and how she wasn't.
Two weeks after her marriage to Duncan, she returned home to an empty house. She began to panic, thinking if Duncan was gone, he could be dead. When they discussed chores, she felt a simultaneous responsibility for everything and resentment to doing anything. When she saw her newborn daughter for the first time, she felt an impulse to run away. She believed she was too dangerous to touch her warrior's hands to those fragile fingers.
When Ashley lied to her for the first time, the reprimand stuck in her throat. When Terrence came in from the yard clutching his arm, she froze for a moment before realizing her son had a bruise, not a scar bearing his grandmother's name. When Noemi screamed because she saw a spider, Madeline managed to squish it, but disappeared to dose herself with the happy potion she had shared with Madame Dearborn and Primrose.
Madeline never grounded her children. They never wore hand-me-downs. She never scolded her children for breaking things with accidental magick or left them alone in unfamiliar places. They didn't take family camping trips. They did attend the Sabbat festivals, but never camped with everyone else.

Family Ties
Madeline's father, Mathias Noble, was an illegitimate member of the Noble family, a family of wealthy mundanes who lived in Marquette, Michigan. Her grandmother was Madeleine Darcy, a member of the blood witch Darcy family. Madeleine was raped by Mathias Noble Sr. at a college party and left pregnant with Madeline's father, who would become Lord Azrael.
The Darcys were direct descendants of the Heartbane family and Volturnus Darcy, one of the founders of the Pendragon Institute. They held blood purity paramount and as such took to marrying their cousins in order to maintain their blood purity. Generations of inbreeding led to physical defects and insanity among many members. It is from this side of her family that Madeline inherited her star-shaped birthmark and the ability of telepathy.
Conversely, Madeline's mother Eve Dearborn was a descendant of the Willowwand family on both sides of her family. Madeline's grandfather Azriel Dearborn was descended from Seraphine Dearborn, one of the founders of the Pendragon Institute, and her grandmother Opal Dearborn was a member of the Prendergast family. Both families were wealthy. It is from this side of the family that Madeline inherited the Sight.
