A sweet kenku who was sent out on a journey after a terrible tragedy befell her home.
"Would you like to hear a story?"
A common question posed by the lovely kenku, who grew up hearing old tales from ancestors past. Eager chirps and joyful chitters from the younger kenku were often the answer to the question, and a wonderous narrative was recited in a soft-spoken, calming, but animated, voice.
Unlike the majority of her race, Whisper's flock leaned heavily into the arts and into peaceful living with nature. They were separated from the cities where their kind were known as scoundrels and lived in a small community in the forest. This community thrived on recreating art and reciting stories and stitching clothes that were "ancestral" to their flock. They then took their (plagiarized) creations into the closest city and sold them there, which would eventually lead to a terrible tragedy, but that's a story for a later time.
Whisper always had a kind disposition. She was always helping younger kenku out, and she assisted the elders of the flock eagerly. Being the daughter of the chiefs of the tribe, and therefore being the most vocally adept, helped solidify her place in the tribe as the most skilled speaker. Her flock always enjoyed listening to the stories she told, as she was able to take them into the fictional world she was speaking of and make the stories seemingly come to life. From a young age, she was the babysitter and vocal teacher for the flock, and it's thanks to her influence on the younger kenkus that her people picked up on more words to add to their repertoire. Even elders or adults sometimes came to her lessons or to story time, because she has that kind of aura that draws people in.
She would often accompany her father and other members of her flock whenever they went into the city to sell their wares, so that she could one day take over the position with ease. She was never really a fan of the city, with all its noises and smells, or the inhabitants in the city, with all those judgmental eyes and prejudices. However, she did find the other culture and all of the different people very interesting, and she liked watching people go about their business. When she accompanied her father to meetings with others, she kept her head down and did as she was told, so as to not earn the ire of anyone. She didn't want to encourage the people to view her as an undesirable person. For several years, things went well... Until the one day that they didn't.
A terrible tragedy struck her home a month ago and took both of her parents from her. Several of her flock also suffered because of the tragedy. On a dying breath, she was told to go out into the world, to escape. She had no desire to leave her home, her people, but it was a dying wish, and who can deny those? Certainly not Whisper. Clutching her mother's cherished music box closely to her chest, the devastated girl left her home and people and everything she loved behind with a tiny flicker of hope that she could find someone to help save her people before the tragedy took them all away from her.
