Iarlaith Tearlag is known throughout Raen'dor as the Blade of the Realms; his is a unique position, and one that few know the truth about. An elf well into his third century of life, Tearlag fought in the War of Blood and Bone against the Undying King and has served the united realm since Queen Imogen Duhem's coronation. He is a feared warrior, combining sorcerous magic with training as a paladin of the Lightkeepers to become a powerful hybrid force in battle. During his time serving the royal house (Duhem, and then later House Eladel), Tearlag has been sent on various missions throughout the realms with the general purpose of keeping peace and destroying evil; what these missions actually entail is known by very few outside the King or Queen's own court.
Tearlag has one daughter, Siobhan, who is a prodigal wizard and a member of Nightcrest Academy's 97th class. He met and married her mother years before Siobhan's birth, but her mother disappeared only a few years after Siobhan's birth-- leaving Iarlaith a single and often absent parent. The two reside in Eiderloch's royal district.
In Spring of the Year 1087, Oliver Roche and his party encountered Iarlaith Tearlag on the road to Eiderloch; Oliver recognized his voice and mannerisms, pinning him as the masked murderer that killed his parents. The party engaged in battle with Tearlag, not knowing who he was nor the title that he held; he easily defeated them, nearly killing multiple members of the party despite Oliver summoning a demon lord out of desperation. Before leaving the scene of the battle, Tearlag told Oliver that he had no quarrel with him or any students of Nightcrest, and that he should not pursue him any further unless he was ready to die.
Later, when Oliver provided a sketch of Tearlag to Guildmaster Ghale Ziafi, she revealed his name and identity while warning Oliver of the severity of his accusation. Siobhan, when she was told of this, insisted that her father only kills evil people and only if he needs to-- according to her, he wouldn't have any reason to kill Oliver's parents or anyone else innocent. Tearlag himself, and how he is related to Oliver's tragedy, remain shrouded in mystery for the party.
