Emerald grew up on the island of Luxor, in the Gulf of Ainas. Emerald was born as the youngest child in a poor family. She has two brothers, twins named Onyx and Opal, and an older sister named Ruby. Her father, Zircon, was an alcoholic and didn't treat Emerald very well because she was the youngest and the weakest of the family. Her mother, Jade, a simple stay-at-home mom, was afraid of her own husband and didn't have the courage to defend Emerald from Zircon.
When Emerald was 9 years old, she was kicked out of the house by Zircon, because the family was in huge debt and didn't have the money to take care of four children. So Emerald taught herself how to survive on the streets. At first she tried eating from the trash, but she quickly switched to pickpocketing people for lunch money. She was often caught in the act in the beginning, but improved over time, and eventually she was able to earn enough money by stealing from people to support her basic needs.
One day, however, her bad habids turned around on her. A man, who she later learned was Horus, the leader of a local criminal synidcate called the Adameuzi, walked by her on the street. Emerald saw an easy target, and pickpocketed the man. A little later, when Horus found out someone stole from him, he send some of his underlings out in search of the thief. They quickly found Emerald and brought her to Horus. Horus gave Emerald two choices: get killed right there and then or begin working for the Adameuzi. She of course chose the second option.
Emerald worked for the Adameuzi for many years, stealing important items, uncovering information, deceiving people, ... She became loyal to Horus and even began seeing him as family. One day, she got her biggest assignment yet: steal the most valuable item on the island from the richest man living there: 5 red diamonds. She managed, after a long night, the get her hands on the five diamonds. But instead of taking them back to Horus, she began thinking. "How else would my family have grown up if they had this kind of wealth? My father probably wouldn't have been a drunk. We would've all been happy. I wouldn't have been kicked out." So she made a stupid decision: she visited her mother and gave her one of the diamonds, and only gave the other four to Horus.
Emerald figured that it wouldn't be long before Horus found out that there were actually five diamonds and not four. She would certainly be killed for that kind of treason. So she decided to flee the island, and got as far away from it as possible. She eventually ended up in Waterdeep, where she came in contact with another criminal syndicate: the Zhentarim.
