Celine d’Argent was a rebellious youth. The obligations of status and wealth felt oppressive to her, and she resisted her family’s attempts to involve her in polite society and raise her to participate in the family businesses. So as a teenager she ran away from home and got lost in a bustling city of magical wonders, where the infrastructure of the city ran on wondrous magical machines - trains, lifts, street lamps, all of it maintained by a corps of dedicated magewrights. Celine began apprenticing as a magewright, which involved some rudimentary training in magic. Through that she discovered that she had a strong innate talent for the magic of motion and portals. It was an asset in her apprenticeship, but it also attracted the attention of some street thugs, who recruited her for their gang. With her privileged upbringing and curious nature, Celine was swept up in the excitement of this dangerous life - scrapping with rival gangs, shaking down nobles and merchants, running from the law. It was then that she started going by the alias "Maeve". She grew accustomed to her new life, but of course it never felt safe or stable, not the way her childhood had been. Perhaps because of that nagging uncertainty, one day she stepped through a portal of her own conjuring and wound up in an unfamiliar land - Dragonsmoke Archipelago.
