Personal history
Petryan’s known history begins at the age of three. He was found underneath a large stone trough in a destroyed village by a passing patrol. No other member of the village survived. The patrol returned to their home town with the boy and gave him the slightly mocking name of Petryan – the little king of the rock. Worried about the child’s future, the Captain of the patrol, Orton Thodor passed the boy to his childless older brother, Elias Thodor. Elias was a fairly well-off Wizard & teacher of magic. Widowed, he initially did not connect much with the boy and aimed to keep him separate from the magic he knew. Elias was well aware of the dangers of magic and suspected it had something to do with the destruction of the child’s village. Also, foundlings have an uncanny knack of getting themselves tangled into fate, prophesies and the like.
However, not long after his 10th birthday, Petryan managed to sneak into Elias’ library and, being a voracious reader, spent all night reading various arcane tomes. Elias found him there in the morning, asleep in a book of abjuration.
It was at this point, Elias realised he would not be able to shield the child from magic, but rather resolved to teach it to him. With an understanding of it, the boy would be prepared. However, he decided against focusing on many of the more practical aspects, rather, he sated the child’s thirst for knowledge by taking a more theoretical approach of the workings behind magic.
Petryan took to this like a duck to water. He had a natural aptitude to think about things is a very logical, step-wise approach. He took to testing the theory. Elias took a more historical approach to magic, but as Petryan learned more, he took to identifying basic principles and commonalities. From there, he would often extrapolate. Elias disapproved, but little could dissuade him. At 15, he crafted his first magical artefact – a simple ioun stone for his guardian.
Elias could see his talent, but did not have the skills to foster it further. Recognising Petryan’s talents aligned well with the newly emerging school of artifacing, He worked to find him an apprenticeship. He placed Petryan in the care of Salett Wynn, an artificer in the nearest large town. Salett was very different from Elias, congenial, if private. ‘Salt of the Earth’ type. He taught Petryan the use of tools to create vessels for his magic: smithing, leatherwork, woodworking and even sewing. He taught the importance of taking pride and elegance in one’s work, even though it wasn’t necessarily required to ‘make it function’.
Petryan also found himself very interested in cooking, applying the same flair for reduction to base principles and then extrapolation to new and exciting flavours.
Then, one day, in his 21st year, Petryan was out walking in the city when he was kidnapped by forces he did not know. When he regained consciousness, he found himself in a dungeon with two other artificers – one apprentice like himself (Sinan Thune ) and a much older mage, Abergast Felter, from Ebrion.
They never saw their captor. His minions had them work together to create a great, constructed servant. A monstrous mechanical dragon that would do the will of its master. He hated the work, knowing what it would be used to do. He initially resisted, and was flogged and tortured. Eventually, Abergast persuaded him that for now, he must comply. Abergast taught the two many new skills – alchemy and the power of chemicals. He also showed them the power of magical runes and sigils. When applied to the body through improvised tattooing equipment, it could boost their innate abilities or allow them to cast magicks. They tried to hide these from their captors, whilst using it to forge an escape plan. It was slow work. Five years later, with only a small shaft of natural light to work by, the dragon-construct was approaching completion. Abergast stated now was the time to act. Using some of their reserved chemicals in a way unexpected by their captors, they blasted an escape route. At first, things went well, but there came a moment where Sinan proved a coward and left Petryan and Abergast in the lurch. Abergast then sacrificed his life to allow Petryan to escape.
Petryan returned to Elias, who, delighted to see his ward, set him up with his own workshop. Petryan began producing his work – enchanting items for locals and, increasingly those from further around. He worked on his own things, too, occasionally setting forth into the wilds to track down new items of power and then try to understand them. Recreate them from base principles, improving them where he could. Some of his proudest achievements and finds include…
During his work, through membership of the newly founded Artificers' Guild, he re-encounted Sinan. He tried to welcome him as a friend, only to have Sinan attempt to steal some of Petryan’s work. The two became bitter rivals, racing to be the first to find items or develop new ones. They often crossed paths, but never fought in open combat.
Now in his 30th year, Petryan is using the skills he learned during his imprisonment to craft his own constructed servant. Not a dragon, but a Great Eagle.
