Ebrion

Nestled in the heart of the known world, Ebrion is a large island nation, bearing witness to centuries of conquests, alliances, and trade. Its central location has not only shaped its geopolitical history but has also given rise to a diverse and bohemian culture.

Structure

Ebrion is a monarchy, led by King Uthbert III, with Queen Mathilde as the consort. The royal family includes the Heir Apparent, Prince Rhinehold, and Princess Phoebe. For more details, see Government of Ebrion

Culture

Ebrion's vibrant culture is punctuated by seasonal festivals celebrating the half and quarter days of the Calendar of Ara. The population, predominantly composed of humans, halflings, gnomes, dwarves, and half-elves, reflects a rich tapestry of heritage. The north embraces Beleghast traditions, while the south leans towards Milagonian influences. Notable minorities, such as the Mitzu in Little Mitzu, add further diversity.

History

Ebrion is a Kingdom, ruled by the King of Ebrion. An island kingdom located between two major continents, it has seen many phases of conquest and occupation from the south and the north. The population and culture is thus fairly diverse and bohemian, with many passing through.

Pre-Unification

Little is recorded of the history of Ebrion before the 8th Century PR. The population was composed of multiple smaller warring tribes, with little connections across the Belt Mountains. Some art and weapons from this period show significant artisanal and arcane skill, though it appears there was little desire to maintain records.

First Unification of Ebrion

The Kingdom of Ebrion as it stands today was first united into a single state through the conquering efforts of Belegondian King Wulfred Blorschild in about 768PR.   Wulfred I’s conquering ambitions unsated in his own land of Belegond, he looked across the Baltam Strait to Ebrion. Starting in the north, he either formed alliances with or decimated the northern tribes, ending with a Siege of Dolon in late 765 PR. After taking the camp, he named it the capital of the new land and declared himself King of all Ebrion.   Forced by the seasons to wait a further six months, he crossed the Belt Mountains at the Buckle Pass. His ranks swelled by new Ebrionians loyal to him, it took only 2 years to claim the south of Ebrion as a part of his Empire.

Wars for Control

The descendants of Wulfred continued to rule Ebrion as a tenant kingdom for over 200 years until, in 1021 PR, an increasingly power Milagon set their eyes on securing Ebrion as a convenient trade pathway from the North and East. This kicked of the conflict that would later become known as the 70 year war. It is during this period that Kandarert, a South Ebrion loyal to Queen Mathilde, allegedly made a pact with Oloch to become a soldier of Death. With his scourge, the war looked like it would turn in favour of the incumbent rulers. However, Kandarert began to prey indiscriminately on all soldiers and civilians alike. Eventually, in an unlikely pact with a nomadic band of Woodelves, Kandarert was trapped and sealed in a tomb. After that, the forces became dangerously balanced, neither side able to fully gain the upper hand.   The 70 year war ensued until in 1094 PR, Milagonian forces succeeded in sacking Kelador. Rodian I is crowned King and declares Kelador as the capital, being more conveniently located for passage to Milagon. The House of Casillero now owned Ebrion.   This ownership was challenged by the remnant of the Blorschild line, the cousin once removed of the former king, who named himself Wulfred III. Gathering a relatively small army from the north, Wulfred besieged and eventually took Kelador. He managed to hold a shaky seven year reign before being ousted by reinforcements from Milagon.

First Independent State of Ebrion

Following the death of King Manetto (1201 PR), differences in the rules of succession between Ebrion and Milagon caused a constitutional crisis. As the eldest from the first marriage of Manetto, Phillipia stood to inherit the throne of Ebrion. Ebrion did not recognise the claim of the only male heir born of Manetto’s second marriage, Felix Casillero. Milagonian rules of succession, however, stated that any male heir formed of a legitimate union would surpass any other claim. After nearly a year of negotiation and squabbling, it was decided that Phillipa would take the Ebrionian Throne as Phillipia II, of the House Andor-Casillero, but renounce any claims for her or her descendants to the Throne of Milagon. This instead would be given to Felix. The two nations should remain ‘sister kingdoms’.

Casilleran Restoration

Despite initial best intentions, the two nations grew apart, with an independent Ebrionian identity being formed. The young Rodian V was especially vocal about the independent identity of Ebrion. This greatly pleased his subject, but annoyed Milagon. In PD 1287, Rodian V made an official statement that he intended to impose trade tariffs on items passing through Ebrion bound for Milagon. Four weeks later, he was dead. Official statements claimed he was killed when his horse reared after being bitten by a snake. Many suspected foul play and the involvement of Milagonian forces.   Deceased at only 25, Rodian V had produced no heir. Milagon took this opportunity to ‘re-unite’ the two thrones, installing current King Narcis as the head of both nations.

The Tawney Revolution

Used now to having a close relationship with their Royalty, Narcis proved highly unpopular in Ebrion. Efforts to quell this even had Narcis shipped to Kelador from Paragan. However, his cunning nature and abrasive personality did little to raise his favour at Court.   Dissent was fomenting, particularly so in the North. Narcis also instituted the Kelador City Guard at this time to control the unruly populous of his seat. Various Pretenders began to make waves in the nation, straining the forces of Narcis to control them.   Support coalesced around one charismatic figure, Agric Tawney. A low-level baron in the North, he could lay claim to Royal heritage both through his mother as a descendant of the Blorschild line and through his father’s connection to the House of Andor.   In 1294 PR, Agric and his forces marched on and took Kelador. Narcis was executed in the Main Square (now renamed in Agric Square in his honour) to grand applause from the people. Agric I was crowned in the Pantheon in Orst. Celebrated as a hero and a liberator, statues were raised in his honour across the land. He lost some favour, though, with the people of Kelador when he moved the Royal Seat and the Coronation Throne from Kelador and back to Dolon in 1298.   The current king is Uthbert III

Military

Military Structure:

Ebrion's military strategy includes the maintenance of two significant war chests. In the event of a southern invasion, the Northern War Chest pays northern mercenaries (Belegond or Kalvak). Conversely, a northern invasion triggers the Southern War Chest, compensating southern mercenaries (Milagon or Alagria) to repel invaders.   Otherwise, militaries are usually organised at a local level. In the case of a war, the following applies:
1. Commander-in-Chief (Monarch):
  • Role: King Uthbert III, as the monarch, would assume the role of the Commander-in-Chief. He holds the supreme authority over the armed forces and is responsible for making strategic decisions and overseeing military operations.

2. Generals:
  • Appointment: Generals would be appointed by the monarch based on a combination of merit, military experience, and loyalty to the crown.
  • Noble Background: Generals could come from the ranks of the nobility, including Dukes, Harthocks, and other high-ranking aristocrats. They would be expected to lead armies into battle and coordinate military campaigns.

3. Troop Recruitment:
  • Noble Levy: Each noble, whether a Duke or Harthock, may be responsible for raising a portion of the military force from their respective regions. This could include a levy of soldiers drawn from the common folk within their territories.
  • Centralized Recruitment: The monarch may also have the authority to directly recruit troops, particularly in times of urgent need.

4. Regional Commands:
  • Duke/Harthock Generals: Dukes and Harthocks may serve as regional commanders, leading the forces raised from their specific regions. They would be responsible for the training, organization, and morale of their troops.

5. Military Council:
  • Composition: The monarch, along with appointed generals, could form a military council to discuss and strategize about wartime decisions.
  • Advisors: In addition to nobles, military strategists, tacticians, and experienced commanders could serve as advisors to the military council.

6. Roles of Ecclesiarchs and Aldermen:
  • Spiritual Support: Ecclesiarchs may play a role in providing spiritual support to the troops and offering blessings before battles.
  • Logistical Support: Aldermen, representing the common people, may contribute to logistical support, ensuring the well-being of the troops and managing resources.
In this way, the military structure is closely tied to the existing political and social hierarchy of Ebrion. The monarch, nobility, and appointed generals collaborate to defend the nation in times of war, with each playing a distinct role based on their societal position and expertise.

Religion

Ebrion shares its pantheon with most of Ara. However, due to its history the approach varies slightly to worship elsewhere.   Whilst most settlements have a chosen deity or deities of preference, religious freedom exists across Ara, and all are welcome to worship any and all gods. The Pantheon at Kelador is a monument to that fact.   Due to the largely forgotten pact of balance occurring in Ebrion, there is a significant presence of of Arawn worshippers

Trade & Transport

Located as it were as a virtual bridge between two continents, Ebrion lies on an effective ‘Silk Road’ and has prospered through trade. Initially, it was control of this path that lead to the desire to occupy, but now the wealth of the Kingdom has allowed it to buy its independence and stability. Goods from across the known world can be found in the Capital.   Unique to Ebrion is Arriant Silver, a metal which is predisposed to enchantment
