INTRODUCTION
As a Half-Elf, Valkilmar is much more rugged and rough-around-the edges-human than his elegant Elven ascendants. He’s not very friendly or approachable. He prefers to keep silent and observe in social settings, particularly in fancier places and around nobility, which he isn’t too fond of. This is reflected in his overall attitude and moodiness. Valkilmar isn’t one for formality, flamboyance and fakery. He is earthy, fiery, and raw. Though some label him a barbarian for his appearance and the tribe he grew up with, he is savage only when needed. He has a mostly reserved, brooding nature, but it quickly turns volatile when provoked, or in battle. As a wandering adventurer, he has developed an aversion to cities and spent years leading a nomadic, solitary life – a path that has resulted in a lack of emotional connections or attachments.
But alas, there is meant to be a turn in that path. Valkilmar has been led by chance, or perhaps by fate, to the northern city of Neverwinter, where he has taken on assisting the city’s defenders against their enemies in exchange for payment and rewards, along with other opportunities and quests. Possessing a detached disposition, Valkilmar doesn’t connect with Neverwinter at first. His half-elf lineage and less than civilized upbringing has ingrained in him a sense of being an outsider. He feels alien and out of place in the city, and isn’t used to being around so many nobles and city-dwelling common folk. However his feelings soon begin to change when he reluctantly accepts the job offer to run a
workshop, and must choose a retainer to serve as his second in command. An outspoken and assertive woman named
Fenella immediately stands out to him from the rest. She isn’t intimidated at all by Valkilmar, rather she talks to him with ease, showing interest and curiosity. And a penchant for speaking her mind. Her blunt, honest approach makes for a quick hire. Bound together as a team, Valkilmar and Fenella must work with each other closely to restore the workshop to its former glory. Along with building a skilled, competent crew. As such, the job forces Valkilmar into more personal contact with people, hiring and overseeing artisans, and managing their daily tasks. He is also tailed around the city by a persistent
bard, and challenged by one of Neverwinter’s loyal defenders (
Gavanairk Lionsen) – encouraging Valkilmar to serve and fight for something he loves instead of personal gain. This expanding group of companions in Valkilmar’s life has a transforming effect on his distant demeanor. Though guarded and aloof, it is progressively revealed that there is a softness behind that scowl and intense, piercing stare. As Valkilmar spends more time in Neverwinter, his workshop employees continue to grow on him, and he especially finds himself caring deeply for Fenella. Their work together forges a strong bond between them – one that’s increasingly blurring the lines of friendship and attraction. The more the two of them are around each other, the more they realize they have undeniable feelings for one another and a partnership that goes beyond the workshop.
But the distrust of city policies and leadership has Valkilmar conflicted about staying in Neverwinter. He is hesitant to settle there and commit his service, and finds it difficult to relinquish his calling to be out in the wild and living on his own free terms.
His considerations of leaving greatly upset and hurt Fenella, whose heartache and bitterness from her own past stop her from letting herself go any further. Though having not yet made a decision, Valkilmar can see Fenella trying to close herself off. In doing so, their working relationship starts to become emotionally-strained, with Fenella painfully holding back her feelings for Valkilmar, fearing he might really leave.
But can Valkilmar truly just move on and leave what he has found in Neverwinter behind?
…Or will he continue to stay for those he cares for, and most importantly, for the woman he loves.
