Night of the Second Day

by Amelia Charlton

We’ve made camp with a few other teams. We’ve gotten really lucky so far. We didn’t have to kill anyone to get our cards, but people still died. But it’s a blessing that we haven’t had to fight anyone ourselves. People from the other teams are looking rough too. Not even just physically, you can see it in their eyes. Connor too.

I can tell he’s trying to act like he’s fine, but he’s obviously not. There’s still a lot that I don’t know about Connor. Some conversations that we just haven’t had the chance to have. Like about his dad. I want to be able to help him, I’m just not sure how to. I really care about him. He’s the first boyfriend I’ve ever had, and now he’s my first kiss. I really, really like him. And I just… I just want us to both get out of here.

I want everyone else to get out of here too, but I doubt that’ll happen. I’ve known most of these people for almost 3 years now. I’ve gone to school with them. I’d consider most of them my friends. And now so many of them are dead, and more will probably die before this is over. I don’t know what’s going to happen next, but I doubt we’ll be let out of here after we get to the tower. Dad’s up ahead too. He’s strong, so I’m not surprised he’s made it this far. I’ve really missed him. I could really use a dad hug right now. So much has been going on, even before we got sent here.

This last month has been one thing after another. And now, even if we make it out of here alive, Bancroft, my home for the last 3 years, won't be the same anymore. Not with so many dead.

Oh god, they really are dead. What are we even going to do when we get out of here?

………...

Oh. Connor’s coming back down.
