Becoming an Aeon
Aeons are lesser gods whose purpose it is to watch over the laws of the universe. Each Aeon overlooks their own domain, which could be as specific as a single cave in which the worldly law of gravity operates strangely, or as broad as the entire Republic with its hundreds of mortal laws.
One does not become an Aeon, in the same way that one cannot simply become a deity of any kind. A mortal with such transformations simply serves the cosmic order under the guidance of a true Aeon or similar power, akin to angels and seraphs serving one of the Pantheon.
Transformation Features
Prerequisites
An Aeon has the following Transformation Features:
Ability Scores: Intelligence 16
Piety: You must have at least 25 Piety while serving a Deity of Law, be they Olsír, Agítio, a specific Aeon, The Furies, or a similar entity
Roleplay: You must have formed a connection with a higher being capable of enforcing greater laws, convincing them to accept your aid in the mortal world. These connections are hard earned, requiring those who wish for power to make a personal sacrifice in order to enforce and uphold the law.
Acting as the Avatar of any specific Aeon, or all of them at once, can take its toll, being forced to uphold regional customs no matter your personal opinions, and being called on to dole out punishments to those the Aeon deems guilty despite mortal excuses and reasons.
Saving Throws: Some of your abilities require targets to make saving throws. The DC is calculated as follows -
DC = 8+your proficiency bonus+intelligence modifier.
Level Milestones
The following are examples of possible level milestones for the Aeon:
- Relinquishing your independence to better attune to your linked Aeon.
- Performing a potent self sacrifice in order to enforce a law.
- Defeating a powerful force of chaos.
- Bring about law to a lawless region.
Transformation Level 1
Starting at 1st level, you gain the following Transformation Boons and this level’s Transformation Flaw.
Transformation Boon: Lawful Gaze
You have gained the sight of an Aeon and can use it to know those who have committed crimes. As an action, you can enhance your sight within 60ft, causing any creatures who have sinned against the current domain to glow with runes describing their deeds that only you can see. The runes gain or lose visibility based on the severity and number of crimes committed.
To see petty crimes or notice criminals deliberately concealing their presence, you may roll an Intelligence (Insight) check contested by a target’s Charisma (Deception).
You may use this ability a number of times equal to your intelligence modifier (minimum 1) per long rest.
Transformation Boon: Astral Form
Your Intelligence increases by 2 and your Wisdom increases by 2. A score cannot be increased beyond 20 this way. You become a Celestial in addition to any other creature types you are. Spells and abilities that affect Celestials of a specific CR have no effect on you.
You have advantage against spells and abilities that inflict the Frightened or Charmed conditions. Additionally you can see the true form of any Shapechanger or creature concealed by Illusion or Transmutation magic that you can see while they are within 10 feet of you.
Transformation Flaw: Planar Binding
Your body and soul are bound to a divine plane of existence. You have disadvantage on death saving throws as the plane attempts to pull you back to it. If you would be killed, your soul has been taken back to a plane of existence of the GM’s choice. This plane is your new home, and you become an NPC under the GM’s control. If you are on the divine plane responsible for your transformation, this flaw has no effect.
Transformation Level 2
Starting at 2nd level, you can pick one of the following Transformation Boons. You also gain this level’s Transformation Flaw
Laws
Some of the following boons allow you to enforce or relax the laws of the world. You have a number of Law points equal to the number of Law Boons you have taken. Each law you gain control over may be activated using an action and a Law point, applying both the ally and enemy effects at the same time. They are concentration effects that last for 1 minute, and affect a 30ft radius centred on you. You regain all Law points at the end of a Long Rest.
Transformation Boon: Laws of Motion
Passive: The great motions of of the universe are
The Steed's domain, while Aeons have the pleasure of aiding in his eternal rule. You gain a flight (hover) speed equal to your walking speed. The ambient authority that holds you aloft is fragile however, and you cannot wear medium or heavy armour while flying.
Ally Active: Allies that start their turn within an area affected by this Law have their walking speed increased by half, and can ignore both non-magical difficult terrain, and the difficult terrain created by this feature.
Enemy Active: The ground within the area becomes difficult terrain, slowing land creatures down.
Transformation Boon: Laws of War
Passive: In service to the
Lord of War, his Laws at your command, granting greater choice over which attacks are allowed to strike true. You gain a +1 to your AC, regardless of if you’re wearing armour or not.
Ally Active: When an ally within range makes an attack roll, you may use your reaction to empower their strike. They gain a d4 inspiration die that they may add to the hit or damage roll. If they miss their attack, you regain your reaction for the round.
Enemy Active: When an enemy within range makes an attack roll, you may use your reaction to weaken their strike. They gain a d6 bane die that they must roll and reduce either their attack total by (potentially causing the attack to miss), or their damage total by. You may choose which roll to affect, but must choose once you see the hit roll and before any effects of the hit take place.
Transformation Boon: Nova Burst
Using your cosmic access to the Aether, you bring forth the briefest flash of a star to the mortal realm. As an action, you conjure forth a 10ft cube of celestial light within 30ft of you. Each creature within that cube must make a Dexterity saving throw or take radiant damage equal to 2d6 + your Intelligence modifier and become blinded until the end of your next turn.
You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Intelligence modifier, regaining all expended uses upon completing a long rest.
Transformation Flaw: Astral Appearance
Your appearance has radically transformed. Your body has become non-distinctly humanoid and visibly lacks all equipment worn or carried on your person. Your form glows with images of constellations within it and you are cloaked by a dark, open and hooded robe. You can contain this form and present the appearance of the humanoid you once were, but this is taxing and requires concentration.
Moments of stress are likely to reveal your true nature. In the following situations, your true form is revealed:
- Concentrating on a spell.
- Gaining the unconscious condition.
- Entering desecrated ground.
- Choosing to reveal yourself.
In events of extreme emotional or physical stress, a GM may call for a Constitution saving throw with a DC of their choosing to see if you maintain your humanoid form. In addition, illusions and transformations cannot hide this appearance when it is not concentrated on.
Criminals and creatures of chaos that witness or hear about your true form become instantly hostile to you according to the GM. If the creature is scared of you or decides that you are too powerful to fight, it will attempt to harm you in other ways rather than giving up.
Transformation Level 3
Starting at 3rd level, you can pick one of the following Transformation Boons, or pick a boon from a lower level that you meet the prerequisites for. You also gain this level’s Transformation Flaw.
Transformation Boon: Laws of Being
Passive: There are too many examples to count of animated life, from
Suróza's fish to
The Breaker's snakes, and Aeons must learn each form in turn. The sight gifted to you by the Aeon is expanded, making it easier to spot those concealing their true selves. You gain proficiency with the Insight skill. If you are already proficient with Insight, you gain expertise instead. Additionally, you gain Truesight out to a range of 30ft.
Ally Active: While within the area affected by this law, allies are immune to any spell or effect that would forcibly alter their form. In addition, they gain advantage on saving throws vs Poison, as their bodies attempt to force themselves back to their natural states.
Enemy Active: Shapeshifters who start their turn within the area affected by this law must make a Wisdom saving throw against your transformation save DC. On a failure, the creature is forced back into its natural form. If they fail by 5 or more they are unable to use any shapeshifting abilities or spells for 1 minute.
Transformation Boon: Laws of Energy
Passive: The energies of the cosmos must behave in predetermined ways, governed by many different gods. The power of the Aeons extends even to concepts such as
Talsia's heat and
Lútus's bolts. When you select this boon, pick a damage type from the following list: fire, cold, lightning, force, necrotic, or radiant. You gain resistance to this damage type.
Ally Active: When you activate this law, pick a damage type from the following list: fire, cold, lightning, force, necrotic, or radiant. Allies, including yourself, within the area affected by this Law gain resistance to that damage type for as long as they remain within the area.
Enemy Active: When you activate this law, pick a damage type from the following list: fire, cold, lightning, force, necrotic, or radiant. Enemies within the area affected by this Law lose any resistance to that damage type for as long as they remain within the area.
Transformation Boon: Self-Determination
You clear a creature’s mind from corrupting thoughts and influences. As an action, you can touch a creature and remove up to two of the following conditions being inflicted on them by a spell or ability: Charmed, Frightened, Possessed, or Stunned. They then gain immunity to those conditions for a number of rounds equal to your Transformation Level.
You may use this ability a number of times equal to your Intelligence modifier, regaining all uses after finishing a Long Rest.
Transformation Flaw: Lawful Pull
You have become intimately linked with your Aeon and its purpose. Whenever you or somebody you are aware of within 30 feet commits a crime appropriate to your location you must pass an Intelligence saving throw equal to your Transformation DC or be forced to uphold the law to its full extent, punishing those that committed the crime. The DC may change depending upon the crime, decided upon by the GM.
You may immediately avoid the effect when you yourself commit a crime if you are able to provide the Aeon with adequate reason, although you must pass the Intelligence saving throw whenever you wish to use an Aeon power until you absolve yourself of your crimes.
Transformation Level 4
Starting at 4th level, you can pick one of the following Transformation Boons or pick a boon from a lower level that you meet the prerequisites for. You also gain this level’s Transformation Flaw.
Transformation Boon: Laws of Magic
Passive: As children of
The Aether, Aeons naturally hold intense magical power, and are able to augment it with their divine authority. The Saving Throw DC of any spells you cast, along with the DC of your Transformation Saving Throw, increases by 1.
Ally Active: While in the area affected by this Law, allies gain may add your Intelligence bonus to their concentration checks. Once per use of this ability, each ally may reroll a failed concentration check.
Enemy Active: While within the area affected by this law, enemies must make a Saving Throw against your Transformation DC using their spell-casting modifier whenever they wish to cast a spell. On a failure, the spell is not cast. If they fail by 5 or more, the spell slot is wasted regardless.
Transformation Boon: Laws of Destiny
Passive: The Laws of Destiny are beholden to none but The Fates; greater beings by far than any Aeon. Yet, on occasion, they allow for these lesser Gods to manipulate the golden thread to ensure events happen as they must. Whenever you would roll for an ability check that uses your proficiency bonus, you may treat a roll of 4 or lower as a 5.
Ally Active: Allies within the area affected by this Law do not automatically miss with an attack roll when a natural 1 is rolled. In addition, as a reaction when an ally within the area makes an attack roll, ability check, or saving throw, you may grant them advantage on the roll.
Enemy Active: Enemies within the area affected by this Law do not score an automatic or critical hit with an attack roll when a natural 20 is rolled. In addition, as a reaction when an enemy within the area makes an attack roll, ability check, or saving throw, you may grant them disadvantage on the roll.
Transformation Boon: Worldly Authority
An Aeon is capable of being anywhere it needs to be at any given moment. As an action you can prepare to teleport, concentrating as if on a spell. If you maintain concentration until the end of your next turn, you then teleport to anywhere within the confines of the current laws you are beholden to.
Transformation Flaw: Lawful Obligation
You have become completely linked with your Aeon and its purpose. Whenever you or somebody you are aware of within 100 feet commits a crime appropriate to your location, you must enforce the law to its full extent, punishing those that committed the crime without exception.
Failing to do so has your Aeon powers revoked completely until you do so.
