Fort Dread

Fort Dread, formerly known as Northwall, is located at the northern crossing of the Fenfall River. During the conflict leading up to the First Dragmar Horde, the fortress had served as the primary defense against invasion from the The Spirit Fen.

It was during this time that a young lord had been commissioned as the leader of the garrison. The noble, whose name was struck from the annals of history, lost both the fort and his men during a particularly dire engagement. To add insult to injury, the enemy commander spared the lords life, casting him out of the fort to live with the humiliation of his defeat. The shame and grief of it drove him mad, and in his grief, he sought the most horrific revenge he could imagine.

The young lord traveled down river to the Makhvi jungle searching for the most potent poison he could find, devoting himself to both the search and the alchemical training needed to create it. It took years, but eventually he devised a toxin that was so potent that a single drop would cause agonizing death within minutes. He produced it en masse, creating several barrels of the toxin.

His weapon in hand, the young lord took his weapon back to the headwaters of the Fenfall River. He had intended to wipe out the enemy occupying Northwall, but he arrived to find it had been reclaimed by warriors of the Eastern Nomads, which only served to redouble his humiliation. In his madness, he wanted nothing more than to see everything that reminded him of his failure perish. It was with that in mind that he dumped the contents of his barrels into the headwaters. However, things did not go as expected.

The poison, which in its most potent form could kill in minutes with a single drop, was diluted as it dispersed through the waters. It was still almost universally lethal, but victims of the toxin would suffer for days or even weeks before merciful death would finally claim them. It was this act, this suffering, that lead to the First Dragmar Horde, and so, Northwall was renamed to Fort Dread, that all might remember the suffering caused both by the conflict between nations, but also suffering caused by a single tortured soul.
