Avaka Kemae
Avaka is a scholar, now. She used to be a lot of things, but she doesn't talk about her past. It's been catching up to her though, and the Traitors' consistent encounters with the Black Sun Syndicate make her extremely nervous.
"But the past is passed," she'd say with her eyes hard and mouth tight, "Concern yourself with the now." All in all that's a strange view for a professor of histories from Chandrila to say. But then, Avaka isn't really from Chandrila...
As for the now, Avaka takes respite in her relationship with Axelmos, a founding member of the Traitors, and keeps away from the Survivors. Especially Zelada, the druk-sucking laser-brained schutta that kidnapped her and got her wrapped up in this mess. She also has made some friendships with Jeema Anasrani and Alizaya Rimebau.

Jeema is friends with Avaka only because both are friends with Alizaya, and there's not a lot of options for good female companionship. It doesn't help their friendship that Jeema is also friends with Ieta, whom Avaka has a catty relationship with, or Zimex that hits on anything that moves.
History
Avaka and Ieta are "frenemies" - they truly want to drub the drak out of each other, but cannot be openly hostile or cruel. They can't even trade insults anymore. Since Avaka and Ieta came aboard the Last Hope at the same time, Kirana considers them equals, regardless that Ieta volunteered and Avaka was kidnapped. It hasn't helped that they both went after the same man or that Avaka has him...for now.
